If the impossible lighthouse in This Is Not For You is what caught your attention, start with the creator’s game and then choose your next step by what you want from House of Leaves: spaces that resist navigation, a story whose form is part of the puzzle, or a house that feels hostile. These are different kinds of connection. The creator describes This Is Not For You as partially inspired by the novel, while You Will Die In This Place is a stronger fit for intertwined play and metanarrative, and Control, Anatomy, and MyHouse.wad are adjacent recommendations with different levels of documented influence.

First, what kind of connection are you looking for?

House of Leaves is not simply a horror story set in a strange building. Its impossible house is only one part of a layered account involving a manuscript, an editor, footnotes, and evidence that can be contested. That combination matters when choosing a game: an eerie corridor can resemble the novel’s architecture without reproducing its documentary layers or asking you to interpret the work’s form.

The creator of This Is Not For You describes it as “just a partial inspiration” from House of Leaves. The game’s premise shares the idea of impossible architecture, but the creator says it does not use the book’s story or its meta and hypertextual elements. That distinction is a useful guide to the other recommendations, too. A game can be a good match for one part of the book without being an adaptation or having creator-confirmed influence.

If you want to revisit the source text before choosing, the overview of House of Leaves describes its layered narrative and central house. The picks below are organized around what a player might want to carry from that reading into a game.

How the games relate to House of Leaves

Game Best fit What is established about the connection
This Is Not For You Impossible architecture, mapping, and spatial disorientation Its creator says the novel is a partial inspiration, but says the game does not use its story or meta and hypertextual elements.
You Will Die In This Place Play intertwined with a book-like, self-conscious form Author Liz Little describes the game and metanarrative as intertwined; the work is not presented as a direct adaptation of House of Leaves.
Control A thematic match for readers drawn to uncanny spaces Critic Jacob Geller has posited a connection to House of Leaves; this is a critic-linked interpretation, not a creator-confirmed influence in the available account.
Anatomy A thematic match for a house that feels unsettling Critic Jacob Geller has posited a connection to House of Leaves; this is a critic-linked interpretation, not a creator-confirmed influence in the available account.
MyHouse.wad Shifting domestic space and impossible rooms A secondary account reports that this Doom II mod was directly inspired by the novel.

The distinctions in the final column are meaningful. “Inspired by” should not be used as a catch-all for games that share an atmosphere or motif. The creator’s description is the clearest evidence for This Is Not For You; the other connections are either attributed interpretations or reports in a secondary source. The evidence supports recommendations, but not the claim that each work recreates the novel’s particular structure.

For impossible architecture and hands-on navigation: This Is Not For You

This Is Not For You is the most direct next choice if the feature you want is the mismatch between a building’s apparent exterior and its interior. Its creator describes an early-1900s lighthouse that is bigger on the inside than the outside, with unnerving geometry, puzzles, isolation, family bonds, and regret. The setting makes the connection to the novel legible without making the game a retelling of it.

Navigation is more than scenery in the creator’s description. The game is 2D and claustrophobic, and it includes an in-game mapping and note-taking tool inspired by early text adventures. The creator says later progress is expected to demand knowledge of the layout. That points to a specific kind of play: the player is meant to build a working model of the place rather than rely only on moment-to-moment direction. If you enjoy recording routes, landmarks, or inconsistencies in a game space, that is the most concrete reason to watch this one.

There is a limit to the comparison. The creator explicitly says the game does not use the novel’s story or its meta and hypertextual elements. Its connection is architectural and navigational, not a promise that the player will encounter a manuscript-within-a-manuscript structure. The creator’s description is in the original post in r/houseofleaves.

The post described the game as upcoming when it was written. Release status can change, so check the Steam page for This Is Not For You for current availability rather than treating that earlier status as current. The creator’s description is useful for understanding the intended design, but it is not a substitute for checking whether the game can be played now.

For a game that is also a strange book: You Will Die In This Place

Choose Liz Little’s You Will Die In This Place if the aspect of House of Leaves that interests you is not only what happens in the story, but how its form makes you read. Little describes the work as both a game and a book, with its mechanics and metanarrative intertwined. In an interview, Little calls it a nihilistic dungeon crawler and a postmodern horror novel, and explains: “The game part and the metanarrative part are so inexorably intertwined with each other that neither can truly exist without the context provided by the other.”

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

That makes this a distinct recommendation from This Is Not For You. The lighthouse game, as described by its creator, draws on impossible architecture and mapping while setting aside the novel’s meta and hypertextual approach. Little’s description, by contrast, makes the relationship between playing and interpreting part of the work’s design. Readers who want a game to behave like a difficult text—not merely to contain written passages—have a clear reason to investigate it.

There is also a practical caveat. Little says the work is deliberately obtuse and misleading, and acknowledges that it is unbalanced in places. Those choices may suit someone who likes resistant, interpretive reading; they may frustrate someone looking for a conventional, polished rules experience. Little also describes ergodic literature as playful: taking notes, theorizing, looking up related materials, and trying to understand resistant ideas can all become part of the activity. That is an explanation of the intended appeal, not a guarantee that every reader will find the experience enjoyable.

For the author’s account of the project and its relationship between play and literary form, read Backward Tabletop’s interview with Liz Little. The interview described the project as crowdfunding at the time it was published; that is not a reliable statement of its present availability. Check the project’s current page before making plans to obtain or play it.

For a hostile house or shifting space: three adjacent picks

Control, Anatomy, and MyHouse.wad belong on a broader list for readers who want games associated with unsettling or impossible spaces. They should not be presented as equivalent versions of House of Leaves. The available account links the first two through critic Jacob Geller’s interpretation, while it reports a more direct inspiration claim for the third. Those are different kinds of evidence, and none should be inflated into a claim about the creators’ intentions beyond what is attributed.

Control and Anatomy: critic-linked comparisons

Jacob Geller has posited House of Leaves as an inspiration behind both Control and Anatomy. That makes them reasonable adjacent choices if what you want is a haunted or uncanny spatial mood. It does not establish that either game’s creators confirmed the novel as an influence, nor does it establish that either game recreates the novel’s manuscript, editorial layers, or footnotes. Think of the link as a critic’s reading of the works, not a guarantee of a particular mechanic or plot element.

This qualification can help set expectations. If you are choosing specifically for map-making and layout memory, the creator’s description of This Is Not For You is more concrete. If you want to explore a critical comparison between games and the novel’s unsettling spaces, Control and Anatomy are worth considering on those terms. The distinction is not a ranking of quality; it is a way to avoid expecting a different game to provide the same kind of experience.

MyHouse.wad: a reported direct influence

MyHouse.wad is a Doom II mod that the available secondary account reports as directly inspired by House of Leaves, with a house that shifts and contains impossible spaces. That makes it the closest fit in this group for someone seeking a house whose layout cannot be taken at face value. The report is still secondary, so phrase the connection as an attributed account rather than an independently verified statement from the mod’s creator.

Across these three, the shared point is a hostile or unstable space, not one uniform approach to text, evidence, or player note-taking. If those literary layers are essential to your choice, Little’s description of You Will Die In This Place addresses them most directly. If a building that seems to break spatial expectations is enough, the adjacent picks may be a better fit.

Choose by the part of the novel you want to play

A useful shortlist begins with the kind of attention you want to give the game. The word “inspired” can conceal very different expectations: studying a layout, interpreting a self-conscious narrative, or simply entering an unsettling building. Decide which one matters most before you choose.

  • Choose This Is Not For You if you want an impossible building, explicit mapping and note-taking, and progress that may depend on remembering its layout. Its creator-stated connection is partial and architectural; the novel’s story and meta or hypertextual form are not part of the creator’s description.
  • Choose You Will Die In This Place if you want play and literary form to be interdependent, and are open to an intentionally obtuse, misleading, and sometimes unbalanced work. Its author’s description is the basis for this fit; it is not being recommended as a direct House of Leaves adaptation.
  • Consider Control or Anatomy if a critic-linked comparison and an uncanny-space angle are enough. Treat Jacob Geller’s proposed connection as interpretation, not a confirmed statement of creator intent.
  • Consider MyHouse.wad if you want a shifting house and impossible spaces in a Doom II mod, while keeping in mind that the direct-inspiration report comes from a secondary account.

These choices do not form a ladder from “least” to “most” like the book. They separate the qualities a reader might be chasing. A spatial puzzle does not need documentary fiction to be compelling; a text that makes its own form part of play does not need to reproduce the novel’s architecture. Matching the game to the part of the reading experience you value is more useful than looking for a single game that stands in for the whole book.
