Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is worth playing if you want a substantial, story-led turn-based RPG with a warm cast, handcrafted visuals and modern conveniences. Those conveniences make its battles more flexible, but they do not turn this into a short adventure. TechRadar’s Nintendo Switch 2 review praised the story, characters and combat options while cautioning that the game remains a lengthy commitment.
What kind of RPG is Dragon Quest VII Reimagined?
This is a remake of DRAGON QUEST VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, the PlayStation RPG first released in 2000. Square Enix’s story begins on Estard, where a fisherman’s son and his childhood friends discover the Shrine of Mysteries and travel into the past. They find that a malevolent force has sealed away entire lands, and restoring them becomes the adventure’s central drive. Square Enix describes the premise and remake.
The past-and-present structure gives the story an expansive, episodic feel: the heroes uncover what happened to lost lands and work to bring them back. Square Enix says the remake streamlines the story, but TechRadar’s review still describes a long experience. Expect a classic-scale journey, not a compact campaign.
How does the remake change the experience?
A handcrafted look
The remake replaces the original presentation with miniature-like diorama visuals. Square Enix says Akira Toriyama’s character designs have been adapted into a handcrafted 3D style, with towns and environments shaped to resemble detailed miniature sets. The result leans into a cute, storybook tone rather than realistic scenery. That aesthetic is part of the appeal if you enjoy charming character art; it may be a poor fit if you do not.

While on the field, players can pre-emptively strike monsters and instantly defeat them If the monster is weaker than the party.
More flexibility in familiar turn-based combat
TechRadar’s Switch 2 reviewer highlights several ways to move through battles more quickly: auto-battle, speed-up options and the ability to defeat enemies in the overworld before combat begins. The review also praises Moonlighting, which lets a character have two vocations assigned at once. These features add convenience and build flexibility without changing the game into a mechanically unfamiliar RPG.
That distinction matters when deciding whether the remake suits you. Faster fights can reduce friction in a long adventure, but they do not erase its length or replace its classic turn-based foundation.

- Hand-Crafted Aesthetic - The character designs, originally crafted by world-renowned manga artist Akira Toriyama, have been reimagined into a charming 3D art style using dolls actually created in the real world. Environments and dungeons are also brought to life with a unique hand-crafted, diorama-style aesthetic that vividly illustrates the beloved world of the DRAGON QUEST series Enhanced Story - While remaining faithful to the original story, the narrative of DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined has been enhanced to provide a more streamlined story experience. Alongside the main adventure, players can enjoy optional side quests, stories and minigames
Is Dragon Quest VII Reimagined worth playing?
It is a strong match for players who want an expansive adventure, enjoy traditional turn-based RPGs and value a warm story and cast. The modern battle options and dual-vocation system give those players useful flexibility as they progress.
It is a less convincing choice if you want a short RPG, are tired of familiar genre conventions, or dislike cute, handcrafted art. TechRadar’s verdict is especially useful for setting expectations: its reviewer enjoyed the story and characters, but found that the quality-of-life improvements do not make the journey short.
