Dragonlord Placidusax is one of ELDEN RING’s most hidden and punishing optional bosses. This guide covers the exact route to his arena, the safest way to handle both phases, his Remembrance rewards, and the arena’s crucial Miquella’s Needle interaction.
Dragonlord Placidusax is an optional, late-game legendary boss in ELDEN RING. Reach him from Crumbling Farum Azula by lying down in a hidden grave-like hollow below the Beside the Great Bridge area. The fight rewards 280,000 runes and the Remembrance of the Dragonlord, but the arena is also essential for using Miquella’s Needle to remove the inherited Flame of Frenzy—so you can enter it without defeating him.

How to find Dragonlord Placidusax
The entrance is easy to miss because it is below the normal route, and a careless drop can be fatal.
- Rest at the Beside the Great Bridge Site of Grace in Crumbling Farum Azula.
- Take the lift behind the grace and go through the temple section toward the exterior cliffs.
- At the southwestern cliff edge, look downward for the small safe ledge. Do not jump straight out into open space.
- Descend via the ledges and floating rocks toward the curved stone platform near the central tornado.
- Find the empty, grave-like indentation in the platform and choose Lie Down.
- A cinematic carries you into the storm-bounded arena beyond time.
If you are making the trip for the Frenzied Flame questline, this is enough: the boss need not be dead before Miquella’s Needle can be used in this arena.

Before entering: build for survival, not a gimmick
Placidusax’s damage is mixed and his attacks cover an enormous area. Bring meaningful lightning and fire negation if his red lightning or golden breath is killing you outright. Keep a medium or lighter equipment load if possible; consistent rolling is more valuable here than trying to absorb every large attack behind a shield.
He broadly resists elemental damage and status effects, while piercing damage is a comparatively sound choice. Do not rebuild around an alleged fire weakness. One guide characterizes him as reportedly fire-weak, but also found no meaningful advantage from fire-coated weapons and fire spells. Fire is much more reliably something to mitigate than something to exploit.
- Melee: A thrusting or other piercing-focused option is worthwhile when it fits your build. The hind-leg and rear area offer many of the safer openings.
- Ranged: Aim for a head when the shot is clean, but stop committing to long casts whenever he disappears or a thundercloud begins to form.
- Heads: Guide data reports double damage on head hits. Take that payoff during a clear recovery window; do not stand in front of his claws and breath merely to force it.
- Summons: Spirit Ashes and online allies can help create openings. A durable summon tends to contribute more than a fragile one that is erased by the boss’s sweeping attacks.
How the fight works
The broad arena can be deceptive. Backing far away is not automatically safe, since Placidusax still has ranged lightning and fire patterns. Play at a distance where you can read his body and the ground, move decisively for the telegraph, then use only the recovery window you have actually earned.
Phase one: learn the red lightning and fire coverage
Early in the battle, watch the ground as closely as the dragon. Red lightning strikes are telegraphed by visible ground indicators; leave those markers promptly instead of attempting to finish an attack animation.

- Lightning claws: Swipes, slams, and lunges are dangerous up close but usually leave a recovery after the sequence. Roll through or away from the final committed strike, then punish briefly.
- Wing slams: These catch players lingering at his sides. If you are fighting near a hind leg, stay alert for a sudden reposition or wing movement rather than attacking on autopilot.
- Front golden breath: Get out of the frontal line; a headshot is not worth trading into the breath.
- Rear breath and tail sweep: His rear is often safer, not safe. He can breathe backward and use the tail to turn on a player behind him. Watch his rotation and disengage when the rear attack begins.
- Boulder volleys: Keep moving and preserve enough stamina to dodge the next follow-up.
- Giant red lightning bolt: He drives the bolt into the ground, then a large delayed blast follows. Treat the first impact as the warning, not the end of the hazard.
The key phase-one habit is simple: react to the windup and red ground effects first, then strike during recovery. Trading damage with this boss is rarely efficient.
Phase two: stop attacking when he disappears
At roughly half health, Placidusax becomes much more mobile. He can vanish into mist, materialize from a stationary or moving thundercloud, and dive with lightning claws. He may chain fast disappearance-and-reappearance claw attacks, so a long weapon art, spell, heal, or charged attack while he is absent is a gamble.

Surviving Placidusax’s Ruin
His signature sequence begins with lightning and becomes two sweeping, golden fire beams—laser-like streams that can cover much of the arena. Do not assume that a distant corner is safe. Prioritize reading the beam sweep and getting clear over dealing damage; this is one of the fight’s clearest examples of why patience produces faster wins than greed.

A practical game plan
- Enter with the right defenses. Raise lightning and fire negation, maintain a roll-friendly load, and do not rely on status buildup to carry the fight.
- Open near, not directly in front. Work around the hind legs or rear when his current attack permits it. This reduces exposure to the frontal breath, though you must still respect tail turns and rear breath.
- Attack recoveries. Use short strings after claw, slam, or breath recoveries. Save long commitments for a confirmed stance break or unusually long opening.
- Take safe head opportunities. A clear head is valuable, particularly for ranged characters, but survival takes precedence over reported head-damage multipliers.
- When he vanishes, reset. Track the cloud and prepare to dodge. Do not chase mist or start an animation that cannot be canceled.
- Heal after commitment, not during uncertainty. His broad arena attacks punish panic healing. Heal after a completed sequence or when he has created genuine space.
Rewards: what the Remembrance becomes
Defeating Placidusax grants the Remembrance of the Dragonlord. Give it to Enia at Roundtable Hold to choose one reward:

You do not have to make the choice permanent. Subject to the game’s Walking Mausoleum rules, a mausoleum can duplicate the Remembrance so that both rewards can be claimed in the same playthrough.
Miquella’s Needle: why this arena matters even if you skip the boss
Use Miquella’s Needle inside Dragonlord Placidusax’s arena to remove the inherited Flame of Frenzy. This prevents the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending from being forced on your character. It is a location-specific interaction: having the Needle elsewhere is not enough.
That makes the hidden route relevant to players completing the Millicent/Malenia/Needle progression, including players who would rather leave Placidusax alive for now. Enter the arena, use the Needle, and return to the fight later if needed.

What Placidusax means in the lore
Placidusax is not merely a powerful Ancient Dragon placed at the end of Farum Azula. The Remembrance identifies his seat as the heart of a storm beyond time and says he was once Elden Lord in the age before the Erdtree. After his god fled, he remained waiting. The Old Lord’s Talisman likewise evokes an ancient king at the heart of a timeless storm and connects that royal setting to Farum Azula’s long decay.
The battle is therefore a meeting with a surviving piece of a pre-Erdtree dragon order—an old ruler preserved in a place that does not obey ordinary time. His damaged, two-headed appearance is visible in the game, and lore summaries commonly interpret the lost heads and wings as traces of an earlier many-headed form. That interpretation should remain separate from the direct Remembrance text. Likewise, the identity of the god who fled is not established by the item text and should not be presented as settled canon.

The most directly relevant Amazon-searchable title is Elden Ring Books of Knowledge Volume II (ISBN 9783869931197). Future Press describes this 512-page hardcover as an enemy-and-boss reference with combat strategies, armament data, artwork, and upgrade statistics, making it the better fit for a Placidusax route or strategy lookup. Availability varies by Amazon region and over time. Books of Knowledge Volume I is stronger for maps, dungeons, NPCs, progression, and lore rather than this specific boss encounter.
Current-version note
This guide reflects the base-game encounter and research current through August 10, 2026. The latest official English patch located was App/Regulation 1.16.1, released August 21, 2025. A later Japanese PC notice lists App Ver. 1.16.2 while retaining Regulation Ver. 1.16.1; neither cited update documents a Placidusax-specific balance change.

Where do I use Miquella’s Needle?
Use it inside Dragonlord Placidusax’s arena. This removes the inherited Flame of Frenzy and prevents the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending from being forced.
Can I get both Placidusax Remembrance rewards?
Trade the Remembrance with Enia for either Dragon King’s Cragblade or Placidusax’s Ruin. A Walking Mausoleum can duplicate the Remembrance, subject to its normal restrictions, so you can obtain both in one playthrough.

Find the hidden hollow below Beside the Great Bridge, build for lightning and fire survival, punish recoveries instead of trading, and treat phase two as an evasion test whenever Placidusax vanishes. Kill him for the Remembrance—or simply use the arena for Miquella’s Needle and come back stronger.
