The best practical level for mining diamonds in 2024-era vanilla Minecraft is Y=-58 to Y=-59. Dig a horizontal tunnel at that depth in a modern post-1.20.2/1.20.30 world: it is deep enough to benefit from the stronger diamond distribution without running directly into bedrock.
For 2024-era vanilla Minecraft worlds using post-1.20.2/1.20.30 ore generation, mine for diamonds at Y=-58 to Y=-59. Diamonds can generate anywhere below Y=16, but they become more common as you go deeper. Y=-58/-59 is the practical sweet spot because bedrock begins at about Y=-60.

Check that your world is in scope
This advice is for modern Overworld generation: Java Edition 1.20.2 and later during 2024, and Bedrock Edition 1.20.30 and later during 2024. Those updates increased diamond-ore generation in the deepest/deepslate layers. Java 1.21 (Tricky Trials) added features such as Trial Chambers, the Mace, and the Crafter, but did not announce a further diamond-distribution change.

How to get to Y=-58 or Y=-59
The number that matters is your Y coordinate, which measures height.
- Java Edition: Press F3 and find the
XYZcoordinates on the debug screen. The middle number is Y. - Bedrock Edition: Pause the game, open Settings, go to Game > World Options, and enable Show Coordinates. The middle number displayed is Y.
Descend carefully until that middle coordinate is around -58 or -59, then keep your main mining tunnel horizontal at that level. Coordinate displays are particularly useful for mining because ores are distributed at different heights.

Why this depth is best
Modern diamond ore generates below Y=16, with higher concentration farther down in the world. The lowest part of that distribution is therefore the most promising place to search. But digging still lower runs into the bedrock floor, which starts around Y=-60. That is why the Minecraft Wiki’s practical recommendation settles on Y=-58/-59 rather than the absolute lowest coordinate you can reach.

Mine with a horizontal tunnel, not blind optimism
For a controlled, repeatable search, make a horizontal tunnel around Y=-58/-59 and regularly check the walls, floor, ceiling, and any branches. A branch-mining approach is a sensible way to reveal buried blocks while keeping the route easy to retreat through.
Large caves can be worth exploring when they are safe, but do not assume that an open cavern is automatically the fastest diamond source. Diamond-ore blobs have reduced generation when exposed to air, so cave walls do not necessarily show the full potential of the deep layer. Tunneling can uncover ore that a cave leaves hidden inside solid deepslate.

Bring blocks, food, torches, and a way to manage hazards before extending a deep tunnel. The advice here is about ore distribution, not a promise of a particular diamonds-per-hour rate or a universal fastest mining layout.
Use the right pickaxe and enchantment
You need an iron pickaxe or better to collect diamond drops. Mining diamond ore with an inadequate tool can destroy the block without giving you diamonds.

- No enchantment: diamond ore normally drops one diamond.
- Fortune: if you already have a Fortune pickaxe, use it on exposed diamond ore to increase the yield. Fortune III can produce up to four diamonds from one ore block.
- Silk Touch: this returns the diamond ore block itself. It is useful if you want to store or move the ore, but it is not the direct-yield option.
You do not need enchantments to find diamonds; they only affect what you get from ore you have already found.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do diamonds only spawn at Y=-58 or Y=-59?
No. In modern terrain, diamond ore generates below Y=16. Y=-58/-59 is the best practical target because diamonds are more common deep underground and bedrock begins around Y=-60.
Does Y=-58 work in every Minecraft world?
No. That advice is for post-1.20.2 Java and post-1.20.30 Bedrock generation in the 2024 frame. Older pre-1.18 worlds, custom worlds, modpacks, and altered servers can use different ore distributions.
Do I need Fortune to mine diamonds?
An iron pickaxe or better is required to obtain diamond drops. Fortune is optional and can improve the number of diamonds dropped; Silk Touch preserves the ore block instead.
The Bottom Line
Mine around Y=-58 to Y=-59 in a modern 2024 vanilla world, use an iron pickaxe or better, and favor safe horizontal tunnels over relying entirely on cave walls.
