In ordinary towns and villages, keep your weapon sheathed and approach people calmly; this is a guide-reported precaution, not a hostility rule confirmed by Capcom’s manual. If guards confront you in a restricted quest area, treat it as a separate, scripted situation: avoid their line of sight or use the Marcher Armor disguise described for certain Vernworth quests. If hostility begins, disengage rather than fighting guards.
Why NPCs may confront you
Two situations can look alike but call for different responses. In a settlement, a drawn weapon may contribute to NPC hostility: Gamer Guides reports that explanation. Capcom’s official manual covers weapon controls, but the retrieved manual material does not say that having a weapon drawn triggers hostility. Sheathing it is therefore a sensible, low-risk precaution, not a guaranteed fix.

Guards in restricted areas can react according to quest context rather than ordinary town behavior. During The Caged Magistrate, for example, one guard expects the Arisen, while other gaol guards may not know why the player is there, according to Pro Game Guides.
What to do in a town or village
- Sheath your weapon before approaching townspeople or guards. Capcom documents weapon controls in its manual; the claim that a drawn weapon causes hostility comes from Gamer Guides, not the manual.
- Approach calmly and see whether the NPC’s behavior changes. If the person remains hostile, do not assume the weapon was the only cause; quest context or a prior encounter may matter.
- If guards are already aggressive, leave the immediate area rather than attacking them. Pro Game Guides reports that fighting guards can lead to hostility from other town NPCs and guards, as well as blocked dialogue. The guide does not establish that this happens in every case or explain how long it lasts.
Getting through the Vernworth gaol
For The Caged Magistrate and the Vernworth infiltration quests covered by Pro Game Guides, there are two suggested approaches. Neither is established as a universal solution for every guard or hostile NPC.
#1 Best Overall
- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories.
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
- Pre-order Bonus: Superior Weapons Quartet
| Approach | How it works | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Avoid being seen | Move behind guards or wait until they cannot see you, as described by Pro Game Guides. | Players who do not have the Marcher Armor set or prefer to avoid detection. |
| Wear Marcher Armor | The guide says the three-piece set avoids attacks during the described Vernworth infiltration quests. It can be bought from Philbert’s Sundries or found in a guardhouse chest during Disa’s Plot. | Players who already have the set, or can obtain it, and are doing one of the quests covered by the guide. |
The armor is an in-game disguise, not a guaranteed disguise for all hostile NPCs. Quest details and item behavior can change with updates, so check the situation in-game if these instructions do not match your current version.

Break away from guards instead of trying to win a fight. According to Pro Game Guides, fighting them may spread hostility to other town NPCs and guards and interfere with dialogue. That is a reported risk, not proof of a permanent, universal wanted system.
Rank #2
- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
No reliable reset duration or universal de-aggro method is established by these sources. They do not support promising that waiting a particular number of days, paying a set amount, or reviving an NPC will always restore normal behavior.

Quick decision guide
- People confront you in a settlement: sheath your weapon and approach calmly; treat this as a precaution, not a confirmed trigger rule.
- Guards confront you in the Vernworth gaol during a covered quest: avoid their sight or use the Marcher Armor disguise described by Pro Game Guides.
- Guards are already hostile: disengage instead of attacking, since a guide reports that fighting can worsen town hostility and block dialogue.
- You want to know when hostility will clear: no universal timing or reset method is established here.
