Pawn specializations are utility skills that affect how a pawn supports your party outside the usual vocation and inclination systems. The six commonly documented options cover curative support, inventory handling, material scouting, selling selected items, interpreting Elvish, and reducing pawn chatter. Each pawn has one active specialization, so choose according to the task you want help with—not because one is universally best.
What pawn specializations do
A specialization gives a pawn a particular kind of utility. It is separate from a pawn’s vocation and inclination: it does not define the pawn’s combat class or general behavioral tendency. The descriptions below are based on published game guides and item references, not an official system reference, so treat the list as commonly documented rather than a guarantee for every game patch.

All six pawn specializations
| Specialization | What the pawn does | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Chirurgeon | Can take the initiative to use curatives on the Arisen and other allies. This uses the party’s consumables. | Players who want item-based support and are comfortable letting a pawn decide when to use curatives. |
| Logistician | Can combine materials and move items between allies’ packs. | Players who want help with inventory handling. It may be a poor fit if you prefer to manage ingredients and item transfers yourself. |
| Forager | Marks locations of enhancement materials on the map; it does not gather them automatically. | Players scouting for materials to improve equipment. |
| Hawker | Can offer to purchase selected items from the inventory for a fair sum of gold. An offer is not a guarantee that any particular item will be bought. | Players open to converting some inventory into gold when the pawn makes an offer. |
| Woodland Wordsmith | Lets the pawn interpret Elvish for the Arisen. | Players who need help understanding Elvish. |
| Aphonite | Makes the pawn refrain from speaking except in limited circumstances, according to the consulted guide. | Players who prefer less pawn dialogue; this is a companion preference, not a combat boost. |
Which specialization should you choose?
Match the specialization to the problem you want a pawn to help solve:
- For curative support: choose Chirurgeon if you accept that the pawn may spend the party’s curatives.
- For less inventory work: choose Logistician if you are comfortable with the pawn combining materials and moving items between packs.
- For enhancement-material scouting: choose Forager; use its map markers to find locations, then collect the materials yourself.
- For a chance to sell selected items: choose Hawker, keeping in mind that it offers to buy rather than automatically selling everything.
- For Elvish interpretation: choose Woodland Wordsmith when understanding Elvish is useful to you.
- For less chatter: choose Aphonite if you want a quieter companion.
These specializations address different needs, and the consulted sources do not establish a single best choice. A pawn can have only one active specialization at a time. A guide also reports that different pawns in the party can provide different specialization effects, so hiring a pawn with a useful specialization is another option.

How to get and change a pawn specialization
Guides describe specialization tomes as the items used to teach a pawn. Using a tome consumes it and overwrites that pawn’s current specialization, so check which effect the tome grants before using it.
Guide-reported tome acquisition leads
- Chirurgeon: Game8 associates Flora’s tome with completing the Medicament Predicament quest.
- Logistician: Game8’s item reference connects the tome to the Heel of History quest and Kendrick.
- Forager: Game8’s item reference connects the tome to the Heel of History quest and Malcolm.
- Woodland Wordsmith: Prima Games associates the tome with giving gifts to Grisha in Sacred Arbor.
- Hawker and Aphonite: Prima Games lists these specializations, but the consulted table does not give a specific acquisition route.
These are secondary-guide leads rather than a fully cross-checked route for every tome. No route is established here for Hawker or Aphonite, so their acquisition should not be inferred from the other entries.
