drv23260.dll is a 32-bit RealNetworks codec identified as Video Codec 2.0 for RealVideo(tm) (32-bit). It belongs to old RealVideo-related software, including legacy media converters, DVD-authoring tools, and older RealPlayer-era installations.
Use this order:
- Identify the application that displays the error.
- Repair or reinstall that application from its original installer or official publisher.
- Check Windows Security’s Protection history for quarantine activity.
- Confirm that the application is a legacy 32-bit program and that the codec is in the application’s own folder.
- Run DISM and SFC only if Windows has broader corruption symptoms.
- Avoid
regsvr32, random DLL sites, and copying the file globally into Windows folders.

What is drv23260.dll
The filename refers to a video codec component developed by RealNetworks, Inc. Its recorded description is Video Codec 2.0 for RealVideo(tm), and it is associated with the 32-bit edition of that codec.
It is not a Windows system DLL. There is no reliable basis for treating it as a protected component supplied by Windows 10 or Windows 11.
The file may be requested by:
- An old RealPlayer or RealVideo installation
- A video converter that supports RealVideo input
- A DVD-authoring application that bundled RealVideo codecs
- A legacy program whose executable folder contains the codec
- A migrated application copied from another computer without all its dependencies
Historical installations placed RealVideo codecs in an application or shared Real codec directory. A 32-bit program may also be installed below C:Program Files (x86) on 64-bit Windows, but the correct location depends on the application.

Why the file is missing
The error usually means the application can no longer find one part of its original codec installation. Common causes include:
- An incomplete uninstall or reinstall
- Antivirus quarantine or deletion
- Disk cleanup or manual deletion
- A damaged application directory
- Copying only the program executable to another computer
- Migrating an old application without its codec folder
- Installing the wrong architecture or an incompatible build
- A missing dependency of
drv23260.dll - A failed update or interrupted installation
A missing-file dialog can be misleading. The named file may still exist while another DLL required by it cannot load. That is another reason a complete application repair is safer than downloading a replacement file.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the most likely solution because drv23260.dll ships with a specific third-party codec package rather than with Windows.
Identify the affected program
Read the title bar and full message carefully. If the error appears immediately after launching a converter, DVD tool, or old media player, that program is the repair target.
If several shortcuts exist, right-click the shortcut and select Properties. Note the path shown in Target or Start in. The executable’s folder is often where the application expects its codec files.
If the message appears during a file conversion, write down the converter name and the operation that triggered it. RealVideo support may be loaded only when opening a particular legacy media format.

Repair from Windows Settings
- Close the affected program.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application entry on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application and repeat the action that produced the error.
If the application has no Repair option, open its entry and choose Modify if available. Use the installer’s repair function and allow it to restore the complete program folder.

Repair from Control Panel
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected media application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Reinstall when repair is unavailable
If repair does not restore the codec:
- Back up any application-specific projects or presets.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the affected application and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the program again from its original installer, the software publisher, or a trusted launcher repair function.
- Restart Windows once more.
- Launch the program from its normal shortcut.
For an old RealPlayer installation, use the official RealNetworks installer. Current RealPlayer is not guaranteed to contain the historical drv23260.dll required by an unrelated converter or DVD-authoring program, so reinstalling the affected third-party application remains the definitive fix.
A successful repair means the program opens and the same media operation works without the DLL message. If the error returns immediately, continue with the quarantine and architecture checks below.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove a damaged or suspicious copy of a legacy DLL. Do not assume every detection is a false positive, especially if the file came from an unverified archive.
To inspect Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the affected application or
drv23260.dll. - Expand the entry and read the detected path and threat name.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:
- The file was installed by the legitimate application installer.
- The detected path belongs to that application.
- You can verify the installer’s source.
- A fresh scan of the installer and restored file does not identify a continuing threat.
If those conditions are not met, do not restore the file. Uninstall the application, scan the computer, and reinstall it from trusted original media or the publisher’s official source.
After restoring a verified file, launch the application again. If Windows Security quarantines it a second time, stop using that copy and investigate the detection rather than repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 3: Restore the codec to the application folder, not System32
Windows uses DLL search rules that commonly give the application’s own directory priority when the program loads a private dependency. That means the correct destination is normally the folder containing the affected executable or the application’s Real codec directory.
Do not automatically copy drv23260.dll to:
C:WindowsSystem32
or:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are not interchangeable suggestions. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains the native 64-bit system directory, while SysWOW64 is used for many 32-bit system components. Neither folder is automatically the correct home for an application-local RealVideo codec.

- Close the application.
- Right-click the program shortcut.
- Select Open file location.
- Check whether the executable folder already contains related codec files.
- Look for a subfolder named Codecs, Real, or a similar vendor directory.
- Restore the file only to the location specified by the application installer.
- Start the program again.
Do not overwrite a working application-local copy with a different archive version. Historical inventories show that more than one build and file size existed, so there is no verified universal “latest” copy that works with every old program.
If the DLL is present in the expected folder but the error remains, a dependent DLL may be missing. Reinstall the complete application instead of adding more individual files.
Fix 4: Check whether the application is 32-bit
Public metadata identifies drv23260.dll as a Win32, 32-bit codec. A 32-bit application generally needs a compatible 32-bit version of the codec.

To check the program’s architecture:
- Start the affected application.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform if that column is available.
- Check whether the program is identified as 32-bit or 64-bit.
Some Windows versions do not display the Platform column. In that case, inspect the installation path and the application’s documentation, or use the original installer information.
Do not assume that a 64-bit Windows installation can use any DLL. Windows can run many 32-bit applications through its compatibility layer, but the application still needs the correct 32-bit codec and its compatible dependencies.
If the program is old and only supports discontinued RealVideo formats, modern Windows compatibility may remain limited even after the missing file is restored. Try the application’s compatibility settings:
- Right-click the application executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Test an older Windows version offered by the dialog.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the application again.
Use Run this program as an administrator only when the application genuinely needs access to a protected folder. Elevation does not replace a missing codec and should not be treated as the main repair.
Fix 5: Check for broader Windows corruption
SFC and DISM are useful when Windows itself is showing several corruption symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, update failures, or unrelated system errors. They are not expected to restore drv23260.dll, because this file is not verified as a Windows-protected component.
Run DISM first:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Then run System File Checker in an elevated Command Prompt:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows and test the affected program.

If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the command again. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and the application after restarting. If both tools complete successfully but the DLL error remains, return to repairing the third-party application.

drv23260.dll is a media codec, not a hardware driver. Updating a graphics, sound, or chipset driver will not normally recreate this file.
Driver work is appropriate when the same computer also has display glitches, audio failures, Device Manager warning icons, or application crashes that clearly involve hardware acceleration.
To inspect Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also select Windows Update from the driver update dialog when offered. Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel when Windows cannot find a suitable driver.

Do not use regsvr32 for this codec
Do not treat this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 drv23260.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. A codec DLL loaded privately by an application may not support registration at all.
If you run the command and receive an error about an entry point or registration failure, that does not prove the file is damaged. It usually means registration is not the correct installation model for that component.
Restore the complete application or codec package instead.

Random DLL download pages are a poor first-line solution because the file may have:
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- An incompatible historical build
- Missing dependencies
- Modified or malicious contents
- No trustworthy chain of origin
- A destination that does not match the application’s loader behavior
A copied file may remove the first dialog while causing a different crash later. It may also overwrite a compatible application-local build.
Use the original installer, a verified backup of the application, the publisher’s official installer, or a trusted software launcher’s repair function. If the application’s installer does not contain the codec, the safest next step is to identify the exact executable requesting it rather than assembling a DLL collection manually.

When reinstalling does not work
If the application still fails after a clean reinstall:
- Confirm that the error names the correct executable.
- Check whether the DLL exists in the application directory.
- Look for a second error naming a dependent DLL.
- Check Windows Security Protection history again.
- Test the application with compatibility settings.
- Verify that the installer matches the application’s architecture.
- Use a process-monitoring or dependency-analysis utility to determine which executable is searching for the file.
- Check whether the program itself is incompatible with the current Windows release.
A missing-file dialog may appear after a program has already found drv23260.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies. Reinstalling the full codec bundle is more reliable than copying a single file.
System Restore is reasonable only when the file disappeared recently and a restore point predates the change:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if available.
- Pick a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
Do not use System Restore as the default response to an old application that has never worked correctly on the current Windows installation.
