drv33260.dll Not Found: Restore the Original RealVideo App

Length13 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing Windows, write down:

  • Which program shows the error: a media player, game, installer, launcher, or older business application.
  • When it appears: during startup, when opening a video, after an update, or immediately after signing in.
  • The exact message: such as “drv33260.dll was not found” or “The program can’t start because drv33260.dll is missing.”
  • Whether the application is 32-bit: check the program’s documentation or installation details. The file is reported as part of a 32-bit component.
  • What changed recently: antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, an incomplete uninstall, migration to another PC, or a restored backup.

drv33260.dll is reported as Video Decoder 3.0 for RealVideo(tm). The file is associated with Video Decoder 3.0 for RealVideo(tm) (32-bit) from RealNetworks, Inc. It appears to be a legacy RealVideo decoder component, not a normal Windows system DLL.

That distinction determines the repair. The safest solution is usually to repair or reinstall the original application that supplied the decoder, rather than downloading drv33260.dll separately.

What drv33260.dll does

The name and supplied product information identify drv33260.dll as a video decoder used by older RealVideo playback technology. It may have been installed with a legacy RealNetworks-enabled media application or with another program that included RealNetworks playback components.

The exact host application and release are not verified. It is therefore not safe to claim that every copy came from a particular RealPlayer or RealOne Player version, or that the file always lived in one specific folder.

It is also not established as a Windows file. There is no evidence here that it belongs to:

  • Windows itself
  • DirectX
  • Visual C++ Redistributable
  • .NET
  • A modern Windows driver package

A 64-bit edition of Windows can run many 32-bit programs. That does not mean Windows supplies their 32-bit codec files. A 32-bit application still needs the matching decoder and any companion files installed with it.

The safest first fix: repair the parent application

If the error appears when opening one particular application, begin there. Repairing the parent program restores its files and installation references together.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 Settings

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the application that displays the error.
  5. Select its three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

Some desktop programs do not offer Repair in Settings. In that case:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Change, Repair, or a similarly named option.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart Windows and test the application.

A successful repair normally means that the original error no longer appears and the application reaches its main window or opens the affected media. If the same message remains, continue with a complete reinstall.

Reinstall the complete application

Use the original installer, installation disc, deployment package, or the publisher’s official support/download channel if one is available. Avoid an installer obtained from an unknown archive or a DLL collection site.

  1. Back up application settings, saved projects, playlists, or license information if the program uses them.
  2. Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Install the complete application again.
  5. If the installer offers optional multimedia or codec components, leave the required RealVideo-related component enabled.
  6. Start the program and test the same file or action that caused the error.

Do not copy only drv33260.dll into a random folder after reinstalling. The decoder may depend on companion files, registry information, configuration data, or a particular version of the host application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the old program is no longer available from a trustworthy source, replacing it with a current media application may be more practical. Keep the old program only when it is required for a specific file format or business workflow, and obtain replacement software from a legitimate publisher.

Check whether antivirus removed the file

A missing DLL can be the result of antivirus quarantine rather than a failed installer. Do not immediately turn off protection or restore the file without checking its origin.

Review Windows Security Protection history

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Look for an event involving drv33260.dll or the affected application.
  6. Expand the event and review the detected path, threat name, and action.
  7. Restore the file only if you can confirm that it came from the legitimate application installer and the application itself is trusted.
  8. Repair or reinstall the parent application afterward.
  9. Run a scan from Virus & threat protection.

Microsoft documents these quarantine actions in Protection history in Windows Security.

If Protection history identifies the file as malware, do not restore it. Remove the affected application, update security intelligence, run a full scan, and reinstall the application only from a trusted installer.

If the file disappears again after restoration, the security product may be detecting a genuinely unsafe file, or the installation may be damaged. Repeatedly copying the file back is not a solution.

Confirm the application’s architecture

The supplied product description identifies this component as 32-bit. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application normally uses 32-bit DLLs supplied by that application.

An architecture mismatch can happen when:

  • A 32-bit program was copied from another computer without its installer.
  • A backup restored only the application executable.
  • An old application was partially upgraded.
  • Someone substituted a similarly named 64-bit DLL.
  • A program was installed from an incomplete package.

To check the application’s installation details:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Select the program and review its publisher and installation options.
  3. Check the program’s official documentation for whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  4. If the program includes its own installer folder, use that installer’s Repair or Modify option rather than replacing files manually.

On 64-bit Windows, install the complete 32-bit version of the original application when that is what the application requires. Installing an unrelated 64-bit runtime will not supply a missing 32-bit RealVideo decoder.

Do not rely on a filename alone when checking a replacement. If a copy of the file exists elsewhere, right-click it, choose Properties, and review Details for the description and product information. This is only a clue, not proof that the file is authentic. The source and application installer matter more than a matching name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error started after moving or restoring the program

An old application can stop working after it is moved to another folder, restored from a partial backup, or copied to a new computer.

The practical fix is to install it again rather than trying to recreate its directory manually:

  1. Remove the copied or incomplete installation.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Run the original installer as an administrator if required.
  4. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
  5. Install to the location selected by the installer.
  6. Launch the application from its new Start menu shortcut.
  7. Test the feature that loads RealVideo content.

If the program was installed for one user only, permissions or a missing per-user configuration can also be involved. Test the application from a new local Windows user account:

  1. Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
  2. Select Add account.
  3. Create a local test account.
  4. Sign in to that account.
  5. Install or launch the application as appropriate.

If it works only in the new account, the original profile may have a path, permission, or per-user installation problem. Reinstalling the application for all users may correct it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Games and launchers: repair the game files first

If a game or launcher reports drv33260.dll, do not begin by searching for the DLL online. Use the launcher’s built-in repair function.

Look for an option named Verify integrity, Verify files, Scan and repair, Repair, or Check installation. The exact menu depends on the launcher.

After verification completes:

  1. Restart the launcher.
  2. Start the game again.
  3. If the file is still missing, uninstall and reinstall the complete game or multimedia component.
  4. Check the launcher’s quarantine or repair log if available.
  5. Make sure the launcher is not restoring an incomplete backup or modifying the game folder.

A launcher verification process is preferable to manual copying because it can restore the expected version and related files together.

Do not register drv33260.dll unless the vendor explicitly requires it

regsvr32 is commonly recommended for missing DLL errors, but it is not a general repair command. It applies to DLLs designed for self-registration, typically those exposing a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A decoder DLL may instead be loaded privately by its application. Registering it will not recreate missing companion files and can produce an error that is unrelated to the original problem.

Use regsvr32 only when the original application’s documentation or installer support specifically instructs you to register this file. If that instruction is confirmed:

  • On 64-bit Windows registering a 32-bit DLL generally requires the 32-bit tool:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:pathtodrv33260.dll"
  • On 32-bit Windows, the usual tool is:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe "C:pathtodrv33260.dll"

Replace the path with the actual path supplied by the trusted application installer. Do not use these commands on a random downloaded copy.

Reinstall runtimes only when the error identifies one

Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are frequent suggestions for DLL errors, but none is established as the source of drv33260.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install or repair a runtime only when:

  • The error names a runtime DLL separately.
  • The application’s official requirements identify that runtime.
  • The application installer includes the required redistributable.
  • The program starts after the RealVideo component is restored but then reports a different dependency.

Microsoft’s Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads are the appropriate reference for Visual C++ packages. Microsoft also provides the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer for older DirectX components.

These packages will not normally recreate a missing RealNetworks decoder. Installing every runtime package at random can leave troubleshooting unclear and does not repair a damaged parent application.

Repair Windows components when other Windows features are failing

Because drv33260.dll appears to be third-party, Windows component repair is not the first fix. Use it when the DLL error is accompanied by broader problems, such as Windows utilities failing, corrupted system dialogs, update errors, or multiple built-in components refusing to start.

Run DISM and System File Checker

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the affected application again.

Microsoft’s Repair a Windows image documentation covers DISM. Microsoft also explains the process in Use the System File Checker tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These commands repair Windows components. They will not normally recreate a missing RealNetworks DLL. If they complete successfully but the same application still reports drv33260.dll, return to the application repair or reinstall steps.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without checking what changed can make the process hard to diagnose. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows reported system problems before any repair; its full version performs the repair. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when this file belongs to that application.

Check Windows Features only for a documented requirement

Some older multimedia applications require Windows media components, but enabling a Windows feature does not establish or restore drv33260.dll.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Review the list of available features.
  5. Select only the feature named by the application’s documentation.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.

On certain Windows editions, media components may be unavailable until the correct edition-specific feature is installed. Do not enable unrelated legacy components simply because a decoder error appeared.

Update graphics and media drivers only for related symptoms

A graphics driver normally does not supply drv33260.dll, so driver replacement is not the primary repair. It becomes relevant if the application also shows black video, crashes during playback, fails after a Windows upgrade, or reports a separate graphics-device error.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the graphics adapter.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

You can also expand Sound, video and game controllers and check for a warning icon. Do not remove a working device driver merely because drv33260.dll is missing.

Windows Update is the safest general source for a compatible driver. If the computer manufacturer provides a driver for the exact model, use that support channel rather than an unknown driver package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finding the right driver manually can mean identifying the hardware, Windows edition, architecture, and correct release, then repeating the process for several devices. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver problems; its full version performs driver installation. It is optional, and a driver update will not replace the original RealNetworks decoder when the application itself is incomplete.

Try System Restore only when the timing is clear

System Restore can help when the file worked recently and a restore point predates its removal, but it is not guaranteed to restore application files.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  6. Review the affected programs.
  7. Start the restore and restart Windows.
  8. Test the original application.

Microsoft provides additional information in its System Restore guidance.

If the application was uninstalled after the restore point was created, reinstall it from its trusted installer afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why downloading drv33260.dll separately is risky

Avoid generic DLL download sites and files copied from another PC. An isolated download can contain malware, the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, an incompatible release, or a file that needs companion components.

Even a clean-looking replacement may not work because:

  • The application expects a particular decoder version.
  • The file belongs in an application-specific folder.
  • Other RealVideo files are also missing.
  • The application’s installer registration is incomplete.
  • Antivirus removed the file for a reason.
  • The error is caused by a damaged installation rather than one missing file.

The safe sources are the original application installer, legitimate installation media, the application publisher’s official support or download channel, and Microsoft’s official pages for Windows components and runtimes. When the original program is obsolete and no trusted installer remains, replacing the program is safer than assembling its DLLs from unrelated sources.

FAQ

Is drv33260.dll a Windows system file?

Probably not. It is reported as a RealNetworks Video Decoder 3.0 component for RealVideo and is associated with a 32-bit application. Its presence in a particular Windows installation has not been independently verified here.

Which program installed drv33260.dll?

The exact host program and release are unverified. It likely came from an older RealNetworks-enabled media application or another program that embedded RealVideo playback technology. Identify the application that shows the error, then repair that application first.

Is drv33260.dll safe?

The reported identity describes a legitimate legacy RealNetworks component, but that does not prove that every file with this name is authentic. Check its source, location, Properties details, antivirus history, and the installer that supplied it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I download drv33260.dll?

No. Downloading an isolated DLL can provide malware, the wrong architecture, or an incompatible version. Reinstall the complete original application from a trusted source instead.

Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?

Not normally. Those packages are not established as the source of this RealNetworks decoder. Install a runtime only when the application or a separate error specifically identifies it as a missing dependency.

Should I run regsvr32 drv33260.dll?

Usually not. Decoder DLLs are often loaded by their host application rather than registered globally. Use regsvr32 only when trusted application documentation explicitly requires it.

Can SFC restore the file?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while drv33260.dll appears to be a third-party application component. Run SFC and DISM when broader Windows corruption is present, then repair or reinstall the parent application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does it fail on 64-bit Windows?

The component is reported as 32-bit. A 64-bit Windows system can run many 32-bit programs, but it still needs the application’s matching 32-bit decoder files. Reinstall the complete 32-bit application rather than adding unrelated 64-bit runtimes.

What if the original RealNetworks application is unavailable?

Look for legitimate installation media, an organization’s archived installer, or the publisher’s official support channel. If no trusted source remains, use a current application that supports the required content instead of downloading the DLL by itself.
