fpshx.dll Missing: Rebuild the F-Secure Installation Safely

fpshx.dll errors usually appear as “This application failed to start because fpshx.dll was not found” or “The program can’t start because fpshx.dll is missing from your computer.” The file is the FSAV Shell Extension Dll, a legacy component of F-Secure Anti-Virus, not a Windows system DLL.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list to choose the correct repair path before changing anything:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • F-Secure is still installed: Repair or reinstall the F-Secure product first. This is the most likely solution.
  • You recently removed F-Secure: Remove the leftover installation or shell-extension reference instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
  • F-Secure quarantined the file: Check its quarantine and event history. Restore it only after confirming its location and signature.
  • The file is present but an application cannot load it: Check its path, publisher, architecture, and the application that is requesting it.
  • Windows has several unrelated file errors: Run DISM and SFC to repair Windows components. These commands do not normally restore a third-party F-Secure DLL.
  • The message also names VCRUNTIME, MSVCP, DirectX, or .NET: That is a separate dependency problem. Repair the component named in the complete error rather than replacing fpshx.dll.
  • You find the file in a temporary folder, Downloads, or an unrelated application directory: Treat it as suspicious and scan it rather than trusting the filename.

Do not copy fpshx.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. A random DLL download may be unsigned, the wrong build, the wrong architecture, or bundled with malware.

What fpshx.dll belongs to

fpshx.dll is associated with F-Secure Anti-Virus and has the description FSAV Shell Extension Dll. It was used by older F-Secure installations for Windows Explorer integration.

Historical installations placed it in locations similar to:

C:Program FilesF-SecureCommonfpshx.dll

or:

C:Program Files (x86)F-Secure...

It should not normally be located directly in System32 or SysWOW64.

Historical file records identify this DLL as a 32-bit module. Those records describe older builds and should not be treated as a universal specification for every F-Secure release. Current F-Secure products may not include this legacy file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The filename alone does not prove that a file is genuine. Malware can use a familiar name, and an old orphaned copy can remain after an incomplete uninstall.

Verify the file before repairing it

First establish which program owns the missing file.

Search the entire drive

  1. Press Win+E to open File Explorer.
  2. Select This PC in the navigation pane.
  3. In the search box, enter:

text
fpshx.dll

  1. Wait for the search to finish.
  2. Record every location where the file appears.

A file under an F-Secure directory is consistent with its known history. A copy under a temporary directory, Downloads, an unknown application folder, or a user profile directory deserves additional scrutiny.

Check the file details

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab.
  4. Check the description, product name, and publisher fields.
  5. Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
  6. Select the signature and choose Details.
  7. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.

A missing signature does not by itself prove malware, particularly for a legacy file, but it means you should not restore or execute the file solely because its name matches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the file is in an unexpected directory or has a suspicious signature, do not move it into an F-Secure folder. Run a full security scan and contact F-Secure support if the detection concerns an active installation.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall F-Secure

A broken or incomplete F-Secure installation is the most likely cause of a missing fpshx.dll.

Before uninstalling, back up or export any F-Secure Password Vault data that you still need. Also make a note of the exact F-Secure product name shown in Windows.

Remove the damaged installation

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on some Windows 10 installations.
  5. Find the F-Secure product.
  6. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  7. Choose Uninstall.
  8. Follow the F-Secure removal wizard.
  9. Restart Windows when prompted.

After restarting, do not download an individual DLL. Sign in to your F-Secure account, release the old device or license if necessary, select Add device, and download the installer for the product you actually use.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the installer, allow it to complete, and restart Windows if requested. Then launch the program that produced the error.

If normal uninstall fails

F-Secure provides an official Uninstallation tool for Windows for cases where ordinary removal does not work. It is a last-resort removal method because it removes the F-Secure installation and its remaining components.

  1. Save your work and close all applications.
  2. Download the uninstallation tool from F-Secure’s official support tools page.
  3. Run the tool as an administrator.
  4. Confirm the removal.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Sign in to your F-Secure account.
  7. Download and install the correct product again.

If the product is an older F-Secure release and its installer is no longer available in your account, do not substitute a DLL archive. Contact F-Secure support and provide an FSDIAG report if requested.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair is successful when:

  • F-Secure opens without an installation or component error.
  • The application that reported the missing file starts normally.
  • File Explorer no longer displays a shell-extension error.
  • A new search shows the file, if that version of F-Secure uses it, under the F-Secure installation directory rather than a system directory.

If the same message returns immediately after reinstalling, record the exact dialog, the F-Secure product and version, the file path, and any related Event Viewer entry. Do not repeatedly copy replacement DLLs into Windows folders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Check F-Secure quarantine

Security software can quarantine or remove a file after detecting corruption or suspicious activity. A missing file alone does not prove that the detection was a false positive.

The menu names vary between F-Secure products, but the general process is:

  1. Open the F-Secure application from the Start menu or notification area.
  2. Open its Events, Quarantine, App and file control, or similarly named section.
  3. Search for fpshx.dll.
  4. Check the original file path shown in the event.
  5. Compare that path with the F-Secure installation directory.
  6. Check the detection reason and event timestamp.

Restore the file only when all of the following are true:

  • The original path belongs to the F-Secure installation.
  • The file’s publisher or signature is consistent with F-Secure.
  • You have confirmed that the installed product requires it.
  • The event appears to be a removal of the F-Secure component rather than a detection in a temporary or unrelated folder.

If F-Secure detects the file again, do not keep disabling protection or restoring it repeatedly. Submit the file or detection details to F-Secure through its support process and reinstall the product if necessary.

Fix 3: Remove an orphaned F-Secure reference

Sometimes F-Secure has already been removed, but Windows Explorer or a startup entry still points to its old shell extension. In that situation, restoring the DLL is not the correct fix.

First check Settings → Apps → Installed apps and uninstall any remaining F-Secure product. Restart Windows afterward.

If no F-Secure installation remains and the error appears only during startup or when opening Explorer, check for a stale application entry:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for an old F-Secure entry.
  4. If the publisher and path clearly identify a removed F-Secure installation, right-click it and select Disable.
  5. Restart Windows.

Do not manually delete registry keys unless F-Secure support directs you to do so. An orphaned shell-extension registration is evidence of an incomplete removal, not a reason to download fpshx.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error continues after the product has been removed, collect the exact message and the process that displays it. F-Secure support can determine whether a remaining registration should be cleaned up.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party F-Secure DLL, so use them when Windows itself also reports damaged or missing system files.

Run DISM first

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Terminal.
  3. Right-click Windows Terminal and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Enter:

text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish.
  3. Leave the administrator window open.

DISM may appear to pause at a percentage for some time. Do not close the window while it is working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run System File Checker

After DISM completes, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

Restart Windows after the command finishes, then test the affected application.

A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC says it could not repair some files, repeat the process after restarting. If the only remaining error is fpshx.dll, return to the F-Secure repair procedure rather than treating SFC as a DLL download service.

If you prefer an automatic repair assistant while working through corrupted Windows components, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling F-Secure remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Install pending Windows updates

Windows Update may correct operating-system servicing problems, but it is not expected to supply fpshx.dll.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install the available updates.
  5. Restart when prompted.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again until no further required updates appear.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Choose Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install the updates and restart Windows.

Test the affected application afterward. If only fpshx.dll remains missing, repair the F-Secure installation instead of repeating Windows Update.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore can help when the error began immediately after an update, cleanup operation, or security-product change.

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter:

text
rstrui.exe

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the programs and drivers that will be affected.
  6. Select Close, then Next.
  7. Confirm the restore.
  8. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. You may still need to reinstall or update F-Secure after the restoration.

Do not use regsvr32 as a generic fix

Many DLL repair guides recommend commands such as:

regsvr32 fpshx.dll

That is not a universal repair command. Microsoft documents regsvr32 for DLLs that expose the DllRegisterServer or DllUnregisterServer entry points. There is no verified evidence that this particular F-Secure shell-extension file should be manually registered on every system.

A 32-bit DLL also requires the appropriate 32-bit registration tool and registration context. Running the wrong tool can produce errors that are about architecture or registration support rather than the original problem.

Use regsvr32 only when F-Secure support gives you an exact command for your installed product and confirms that the file is intended to self-register. Otherwise, repair or reinstall the owning application.

Drivers and unrelated dependencies

fpshx.dll is not a graphics-driver, DirectX, Microsoft Visual C++, or .NET file. Installing those components will not normally restore it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the complete error names a separate runtime, follow that component’s official repair instructions. Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable packages are architecture-specific and do not contain fpshx.dll.

Likewise, Device Manager is not a repair tool for this F-Secure shell extension. Use it only when Windows also reports a separate hardware or driver problem:

  6. Restart Windows if you uninstall a driver.
  7. Obtain replacement drivers from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.

If manually locating drivers for several devices is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. This is optional and does not replace reinstalling F-Secure for a genuine fpshx.dll failure.

Why DLL download sites are unsafe

Downloading fpshx.dll from a random DLL website is the wrong repair path because:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The file may contain malware.
  • The download may have no valid F-Secure signature.
  • The build may not match the installed F-Secure product.
  • A historical 32-bit build may be incompatible with another release.
  • Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can create a second, harder-to-diagnose problem.
  • The missing file may be only a symptom of a damaged installation or stale registration.

Use the official F-Secure account and installer, F-Secure’s Windows uninstallation tool, Windows Update, and Microsoft’s repair utilities instead.

Escalate the problem safely

Contact F-Secure support when:

  • The official installer repeatedly fails.
  • The uninstallation tool cannot remove the product.
  • The file is repeatedly quarantined.
  • The product name or installer is no longer available.
  • The error returns after a clean reinstall.

Before contacting support, gather:

  • The exact error dialog.
  • The full path of any existing fpshx.dll.
  • The Windows 10 or Windows 11 version.
  • The F-Secure product and version.
  • The time the error began.
  • Recent updates, cleanups, or security detections.
  • Relevant Event Viewer entries.

F-Secure may ask for an FSDIAG report. Generate it through the official F-Secure support tools process and send it only through the support channel.

Prevention

Keep the supported F-Secure product updated through its own account or installer. Do not delete files from its installation directory during cleanup, and do not restore quarantined files without checking their path and signature.

If you no longer use F-Secure, uninstall it completely and restart Windows. Removing the owning application cleanly is safer than leaving an obsolete shell-extension reference behind.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FAQ

Is fpshx.dll a Windows file?

No. It is a legacy third-party F-Secure Anti-Virus component and should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.

Is fpshx.dll malware?

The filename alone cannot answer that. Verify the location, publisher, digital signature, and F-Secure quarantine history. A file in an unrelated or temporary directory is more suspicious than one inside an F-Secure installation.

Should I download a replacement DLL?

No. Reinstall the F-Secure product from its official source. A standalone DLL can be the wrong build, unsigned, malicious, or unable to repair the damaged installation that caused the error.

Will SFC restore fpshx.dll?

Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows files. It may help when Windows has broader corruption, but an F-Secure repair or reinstall is the appropriate fix for this file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?

Historical records identify fpshx.dll as a 32-bit legacy module. Do not use that historical detail to choose a download or assume that every current F-Secure release contains it.

Why does the error remain after uninstalling F-Secure?

Windows may still have a stale startup or Explorer shell-extension reference. Remove the remaining F-Secure installation cleanly, restart, and contact F-Secure support rather than manually editing the registry.

Does regsvr32 fpshx.dll fix the error?

Not generally. Use that command only when the installed F-Secure product documentation or support team confirms that this module should be registered and provides the correct architecture-specific procedure.
