“The program can’t start because sqlboot.dll is missing from your computer.”

You may also see “sqlboot.dll was not found,” “Error loading sqlboot.dll,” or “unable to load SQLBOOT.DLL.” The safest fix is to identify the Microsoft SQL Server installation that owns sqlboot.dll, then repair that installation from matching Microsoft media.

Which fix applies to you

Use the description and path in the error to choose the correct repair:

  • The error appears while installing or updating SQL Server: inspect the SQL Server setup logs first, then run Setup repair.
  • SQL Server, Express, or LocalDB no longer starts: repair the affected SQL Server feature or instance.
  • A business application or game shows the error: repair or reinstall that parent application, then repair its bundled SQL Server, Express, or LocalDB component if applicable.
  • SSMS opens with the error: repair SQL Server Management Studio separately through Visual Studio Installer.
  • The file was quarantined: check your security software, verify the original SQL Server path, and repair SQL Server from trusted media.
  • The error names an x86 program: use the x86 SQL Server component when the application requires it, even on 64-bit Windows.
  • Several Windows files are also damaged: use DISM and SFC after addressing the SQL Server installation.
  • The error remains after SQL Server was removed: find the leftover startup entry, scheduled task, service, or application that still calls the old installation.

Do not begin by copying a replacement file into System32. sqlboot.dll is normally an SQL Server file, not a protected Windows system DLL.

What sqlboot.dll is and where it belongs

sqlboot.dll ships with Microsoft SQL Server. Microsoft servicing records list separate x64 and x86 copies, so the file is tied to both the SQL Server generation and the architecture of the component using it. Microsoft’s SQL Server 2016 update records list Sqlboot.dll, and SQL Server servicing history also shows the file in earlier and later SQL Server branches.Microsoft SQL Server 2016 file list

It generally belongs in a Microsoft SQL Server directory, often a versioned shared or setup location similar to:

C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server140Sharedsqlboot.dll

The exact folder depends on the SQL Server release, installed features, instance, and system architecture. It is not normally installed as:

C:WindowsSystem32sqlboot.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64sqlboot.dll

The internal description may appear as DO NOT DELETE THIS FILE, but that label is not a repair instruction. Do not treat it as evidence that the file should be copied from an unrelated computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Microsoft update can replace the file with a different build. Do not substitute a file from another SQL Server branch, even if the filename is identical. Microsoft’s version history explains how SQL Server releases and cumulative updates are serviced.SQL Server update and version history

Why the error happens

The usual causes are:

Cause What normally fixes it
Incomplete SQL Server installation SQL Server Setup repair
Interrupted update or uninstall Review setup logs, then repair or reinstall the affected feature
Missing Windows Installer cache files Restore the cache using Microsoft’s documented process
Antivirus quarantine Verify the quarantine record, then repair from SQL Server media
x86 and x64 mismatch Repair or install the architecture required by the calling program
Application migration or cloning Repair the parent application and its SQL dependency
Manual deletion or disk cleanup SQL Server repair or a clean reinstall
Orphaned startup entry after removal Identify and remove the stale caller after confirming it is no longer needed
Broader Windows corruption DISM followed by SFC, when other Windows components are affected

Step 1: Identify the SQL Server owner

Before repairing anything, record the complete error path and the program that triggers it.

Check the error path

If the message includes a path, look for clues such as:

C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL Server

The number in a folder such as 110, 120, 130, 140, or another versioned directory can indicate the SQL Server generation, but do not use the folder number alone to choose replacement files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A file in Program Files (x86) usually belongs to a 32-bit component. A 32-bit application can require x86 SQL Server files on 64-bit Windows. Conversely, a 64-bit SQL Server installation normally uses files under Program Files.

Check installed programs

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for entries beginning with Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft SQL Server Express, or Microsoft SQL Server LocalDB.
  5. Note the release, instance-related entries, and recent update entries.
  6. Also check for the application that displays the error.

On Windows 11, you can instead open Settings, select Apps, choose Installed apps, and search for SQL Server, LocalDB, Express, or the affected application. On Windows 10, open Settings, select Apps, then Apps & features.

Do not uninstall SQL Server simply because one file is missing. Uninstalling first can remove instance information, shared components, or application dependencies that repair could have preserved.

Check SQL Server setup logs

SQL Server setup logs are normally stored under:

%programfiles%Microsoft SQL Server<nnn>Setup BootstrapLog

To open the location:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Paste %programfiles%Microsoft SQL Server.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Open the numbered SQL Server folder.
  5. Open Setup Bootstrap.
  6. Open Log.
  7. Open the most recent timestamped folder.

Review Summary.txt, the latest Detail.txt, MSI logs, and configuration data. In Summary.txt, search for error and failed. In Detail.txt, inspect the final section and the entries recorded at the time of the failure.SQL Server setup logs

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error occurs during setup, do this investigation before uninstalling or deleting SQL Server folders.

Step 2: Repair SQL Server from matching media

This is the primary fix for a missing or corrupt sqlboot.dll.

Prepare first

  1. Back up databases and important application data.
  2. Record SQL Server instance names, service accounts, data directories, and custom settings.
  3. Obtain installation media matching the installed SQL Server generation and architecture.
  4. Close applications that use SQL Server.
  5. Temporarily pause only the relevant scheduled maintenance or installation activity. Do not broadly disable security software.

SQL Server Express repair requires offline installation media rather than relying only on the small web bootstrapper. Microsoft provides Express packages and media options for supported releases, including SQL Server 2014 Express and SQL Server 2017 Express.SQL Server 2014 Express downloads SQL Server 2017 Express downloads

Use Installation Center

  1. Mount the SQL Server ISO or extract the matching installation media.
  2. Right-click setup.exe.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. In SQL Server Installation Center, select Maintenance.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Choose the affected instance or shared feature.
  7. Follow the validation and repair steps.
  8. Restart Windows if Setup requests it.
  9. Start the original program again.

Microsoft’s repair process replaces missing or corrupt SQL Server files, registry keys, and configuration values when the correct source is available.Repair a failed SQL Server installation

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a named instance, Microsoft also documents a quiet repair command:

setup.exe /q /ACTION=Repair /INSTANCENAME=<instancename>

For an interactive repair with progress information, use:

setup.exe /ACTION=REPAIR /INDICATEPROGRESS=TRUE

Run these commands from the root of matching SQL Server installation media in an elevated Command Prompt. Replace <instancename> with the actual instance name. Do not use a command from a different SQL Server release.

Confirm the repair

The repair worked when:

  • Setup finishes without a failure.
  • The SQL Server service starts normally.
  • The original application no longer reports sqlboot.dll.
  • The repaired file is back in the SQL Server directory expected by that installation.
  • A new attempt to launch the affected feature does not produce the same loader error.

If repair fails, save the new Summary.txt and Detail.txt files. Do not repeatedly run repair without reading the failure. The log may identify missing media, a failed MSI package, permissions, a pending reboot, or an installer-cache problem.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

Step 3: Repair Express or LocalDB used by an application

Many desktop applications install SQL Server Express or LocalDB as a dependency. In that situation, the application may be the visible caller even though SQL Server owns the missing file.

  1. Close the application.
  2. Back up its database and application data.
  3. Open Installed apps or Programs and Features.
  4. Select the matching Microsoft SQL Server or SQL Server Express entry.
  5. Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, if available.
  6. If no usable repair option appears, run matching offline SQL Server media and use Maintenance → Repair.
  7. If the application supplied a private SQL installer, use the application’s official installer to repair or reinstall that dependency.
  8. Start the application and test the operation that originally failed.

For LocalDB, do not delete LocalDB database files as a first step. Reinstalling the LocalDB package can affect the application’s connection setup, but deleting user databases can cause data loss. Preserve the data first and follow the application vendor’s documented recovery process when the database is application-managed.

If the application was moved from another PC, install the application’s current official package rather than copying its SQL Server folders. A cloned or migrated installation can retain references to paths, instances, or architectures that do not exist on the new computer.

Step 4: Repair SSMS separately

SQL Server Management Studio is maintained separately from the SQL Server database engine. If SSMS itself is the program showing the error, repairing the database engine may not repair SSMS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close SSMS.
  2. Open the Start menu.
  3. Search for Visual Studio Installer.
  4. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  5. Find the installed SSMS entry.
  6. Select More.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Allow the installer to complete.
  9. Restart Windows if requested.
  10. Open SSMS and test the connection again.

Microsoft documents this repair route for SSMS.Repair SQL Server Management Studio

If SSMS repair completes but the error remains in a separate application, repair the SQL Server or LocalDB component owned by that application. SSMS and SQL Server are related products, not interchangeable installations.

Step 5: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate SQL Server file after an update, installation interruption, or changed detection rule.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event naming sqlboot.dll or the SQL Server installation directory.
  5. If your organization uses another security product, open its quarantine and detection history instead.
  6. Record the detection name, original path, and time.
  7. Confirm that the original path belongs to the installed SQL Server component.
  8. Restore the item only according to your security policy and only after verifying its source.
  9. Run SQL Server Setup repair so the file is restored from trusted Microsoft media.
  10. Run a security scan if the file was found in a temporary folder, user profile, or unrelated application directory.

Do not download a replacement DLL to compensate for a quarantine event. If security software repeatedly removes the repaired file, contact the security administrator or vendor and resolve the detection before continuing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 6: Repair missing installer-cache files

SQL Server repair can fail when Windows Installer cache files were deleted during cleanup or disk maintenance. The installer may ask for an original MSI or CAB file, or report that the installation source is unavailable.

Do not manually rename, move, or populate Windows Installer cache directories with files from another computer. Use matching SQL Server media and Microsoft’s documented cache-repair procedure.Restore missing Windows Installer cache files

The practical sequence is:

  1. Save the exact missing-file or package name from the Setup error.
  2. Review Summary.txt, Detail.txt, and the MSI log.
  3. Locate matching installation media for the same SQL Server branch and architecture.
  4. Retry repair from that media.
  5. If Setup still requests a cache file, follow Microsoft’s documented restoration process.
  6. Retry repair and preserve the resulting logs.

If the original instance is badly damaged and repair cannot restore it, back up accessible databases and plan a supported reinstall. A reinstall should be the escalation step, not the first reaction to one missing file.

Step 7: Use DISM and SFC only for Windows corruption

sqlboot.dll is not normally a Windows component, so SFC does not usually restore it. Use these commands when other protected Windows files are damaged, Windows servicing is failing, or SQL Server Setup reports a broader Windows component problem.

  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Retry SQL Server repair.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in this type of Windows repair sequence.System File Checker DISM and SFC guidance

If SFC reports that it repaired files but sqlboot.dll is still missing, that result is not surprising. Return to SQL Server Setup repair.

Running these commands repeatedly without checking the SQL Server logs is not a substitute for repairing SQL Server. If you prefer help identifying which Windows components are damaged rather than manually comparing command output, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show what it finds; its repair functions are provided by the full version, and it is not required for SQL Server repair.

Step 8: Check architecture before reinstalling

A 32-bit application may require the x86 SQL component even on 64-bit Windows. Installing only x64 SQL Server files can leave the original error unresolved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To identify the caller:

  1. Find the executable named in the error or application shortcut.
  2. Check the application’s documentation or installation directory.
  3. Look for an x86, 32-bit, or Program Files (x86) installation path.
  4. Check the SQL Server setup logs for the feature and package architecture.
  5. Match the SQL Server Express or LocalDB package to the calling application.

Do not assume that 64-bit Windows means every application needs x64 SQL Server. Microsoft’s Express packages distinguish x86 and x64 installers.SQL Server Express packages

Do not mix an x86 DLL into an x64 SQL Server directory or the reverse. Repair the complete matching feature from its installation media.

Step 9: Update or reinstall a separate driver only when evidence points there

sqlboot.dll is not a hardware driver, and updating a graphics, printer, storage, or chipset driver will not normally replace it. Use Device Manager only when the same program also reports a device problem or Windows shows a separate driver failure.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category containing the affected device.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
  6. Use Update driver only with a driver supplied by Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
  7. If the device is malfunctioning after an update, use Roll Back Driver when available.
  8. Restart Windows and test the device separately from SQL Server.

When manually hunting through hardware support pages and comparing driver versions is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its driver installation features require the full version, and it is not a required fix for sqlboot.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Step 10: Consider System Restore only as a fallback

System Restore may help after an accidental deletion, failed update, or software change if a suitable restore point exists. It can also roll back applications, drivers, and updates, so back up databases and important files first.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Choose a different restore point if offered.
  5. Choose a point created before the SQL Server failure.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs.
  7. Review the changes.
  8. Start the restore only after confirming the impact.
  9. Restart Windows and test SQL Server.

System Restore does not replace a proper SQL Server repair and may not restore a version-compatible SQL Server installation. Use it when the timing strongly points to a recent system change and normal repair is unavailable.

Do not download sqlboot.dll or register it

Avoid websites offering individual DLL downloads. A random replacement can contain malware, have the wrong SQL Server build, use the wrong architecture, lack required dependencies, or hide the actual installation damage. It can also leave SQL Server servicing and installer records inconsistent.

The safe sources are:

  • Matching Microsoft SQL Server installation media
  • Microsoft SQL Server Express or LocalDB packages
  • Microsoft SQL Server servicing packages
  • The official installer for the application that installed the SQL component

Do not copy sqlboot.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder. Do not replace it with a file from another PC.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

regsvr32 is also not a routine fix. That command is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. SQL Server’s documented repair method is Setup repair, not DLL registration.Microsoft regsvr32 reference

If the error appears after SQL Server was removed

If SQL Server was uninstalled but the message appears at every login:

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Disable only an entry clearly associated with the removed SQL application.
  4. Open Task Scheduler.
  5. Review Task Scheduler Library for tasks that launch the removed application.
  6. Check Services for a service pointing to a deleted SQL Server path.
  7. Check the application’s own uninstall or repair option.
  8. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not delete registry keys or scheduled tasks based only on a filename. Identify the program calling sqlboot.dll first. If the old entry belongs to an application still in use, repair that application instead.

Prevention after the repair

  • Keep SQL Server updates matched to the installed SQL Server branch.
  • Do not interrupt SQL Server Setup or cumulative updates.
  • Keep current database and application backups.
  • Avoid aggressive cleanup utilities that remove installer caches.
  • Record instance names, custom data paths, and service accounts before major repairs.
  • Review antivirus quarantine after SQL Server updates.
  • Keep the original SQL Server installation media or an approved offline copy available.
  • Do not copy SQL Server program folders between computers.
  • Use x86 and x64 packages according to the calling application, not just the Windows edition.

FAQ

Is sqlboot.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is a Microsoft SQL Server file. It normally resides in an SQL Server installation directory rather than System32 or SysWOW64.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download sqlboot.dll by itself?

You should not. Microsoft distributes it through SQL Server installation and servicing packages, not as a general standalone DLL repair download.

Which SQL Server version owns my copy?

Use the full path, installed-program entries, setup logs, and the calling executable. Do not infer compatibility from the filename alone. Different SQL Server generations and updates can contain different builds.

Does SFC restore sqlboot.dll?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. Repair the SQL Server installation from matching media instead.

Should I run regsvr32 sqlboot.dll?

No, not as a routine repair. SQL Server Setup repair restores the file and its installation state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the error occur only in one application?

That application may be 32-bit, may bundle SQL Server Express or LocalDB, or may reference a private SQL component. Repair the parent application and identify the SQL package it installed.

What if SQL Server repair asks for media?

Obtain matching offline media. If Windows Installer cache files are missing, follow Microsoft’s cache restoration guidance rather than copying files into installer directories manually.

What information should I collect before asking for support?

Save the exact error text, complete file path, calling program, SQL Server edition and architecture, installed update information, antivirus quarantine record, and the latest Summary.txt, Detail.txt, and MSI logs.
