dsitf.dll is a legacy Microsoft Office application DLL, not a standard Windows system file. If Windows reports that dsitf.dll is missing or could not be loaded, repair the Office installation that supplied it instead of downloading a standalone replacement.
What dsitf.dll is and where it belongs
The file description is Microsoft Office Document Update Utility Proxy. Public Office records associate it mainly with Office 2003 and Office 2007-era installations.

| File | dsitf.dll |
| Type | Microsoft Office application component |
| Architecture | Public records identify it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL |
| Office locations | Often under Microsoft OfficeOFFICE11 or Microsoft OfficeOffice12 |
| Windows status | Not normally a Windows component in System32 or SysWOW64 |
The exact version and size can vary between Office generations and installation types. Do not use a file’s byte size alone to decide whether it is genuine.
The error may appear when starting an Office 2003 or Office 2007 application, an Access-based application, an Office document utility, or older software that automates or embeds Office. A damaged Office installation can also affect a third-party program that depends on Office components.

Commonly reported messages include:
- “This application failed to start because dsitf.dll was not found.”
- “The file dsitf.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: dsitf.dll.”
- “Error loading dsitf.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because dsitf.dll is missing from your computer.”
“ The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that dsitf.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the DLL but failed to load a dependency required by it. Record the complete message and the name of the program showing it before changing anything.
First, identify the affected Office installation
Before repairing Windows, determine which application is requesting the file.
1. Check the program named in the error
If the message names Word, Excel, Access, an Office utility, or an older business application, repair that Office installation first.
If the message appears when launching a non-Microsoft program, that program may be automating Office. Repair both applications rather than copying a DLL into the third-party program’s folder.
2. Search for an existing copy
Open File Explorer and search the drive containing Office for:
dsitf.dll
Expected locations include folders resembling:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOFFICE11
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice12
A copy in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, Downloads, a temporary folder, or a randomly named user-profile directory should not automatically be trusted.
3. Check the file’s properties
Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect:

- The General tab for its full path.
- The Details tab for the description and company information.
- The Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- The Digital Signature Details button to verify whether Windows reports the signature as valid.
A valid signature and an expected Office path are reassuring, but they do not replace repairing the installation. If the signature is missing, invalid, or the path is suspicious, do not restore the file from an untrusted source.
Fix 1: Repair Office from Windows Settings
For Microsoft 365, Office 2016, Office 2019, Office 2021, and Office 2024, use Microsoft’s repair workflow first. Microsoft documents this process in Repair an Office application.

- Find Microsoft 365 or the installed Microsoft Office product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Quick Repair.
- Select Repair and allow the process to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the program that originally displayed the error.
Quick Repair replaces damaged Office files without requiring a full download in many installations. If dsitf.dll is still missing, repeat the process and choose Online Repair instead. Online Repair is more extensive and may reset or reinstall Office components.
If the Office entry has no Modify button, or the repair process fails, continue with a reinstall from Microsoft’s Office installation and reinstallation guidance.
A successful repair should let the affected Office program open without the dsitf.dll message. If the same error returns immediately, check the installation architecture and antivirus history before trying another repair.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall Office 2003 or Office 2007
Office 2003 and Office 2007 use older installation technology and may not appear in modern Windows repair menus.
Use the original licensed CD, deployment media, or a legitimate installation source provided by your organization.
- Close all Office programs.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the Office entry.
- Choose Change.
- If a repair option is offered, select it and follow the wizard.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If repair is unavailable or does not restore the file, uninstall Office from the same Programs and Features window, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original licensed media. Back up documents and confirm that you have the required product key or organization deployment access first.

Office 2007 reached end of support on October 10, 2017. Existing licensed media may still repair an installation, but Microsoft no longer provides normal support or security updates for Office 2007. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, migration to a currently supported Office release is the safer long-term solution.
Do not treat an old Office download found online as an official Microsoft redistributable. If the original installer is unavailable, reinstalling a supported Office release is preferable to reconstructing the old installation with individual DLL files.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have quarantined or deleted an Office DLL after an update or scan.

- Look for a detection involving
dsitf.dllor the Office installation directory. - Open the detection and review its path, detection name, and action.
- Restore the file only if it is clearly the original Office file in the expected Office directory and your security product confirms a false positive.
Microsoft explains Protection History in the Windows Security app and provides additional guidance for restoring quarantined files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not disable antivirus protection just to make the error disappear. If the file is no longer listed in quarantine, restore it through Office repair or the original installer. A replacement copied from a download site is not an equivalent recovery method.
Fix 4: Check for mixed Office architectures
Public records identify dsitf.dll as a 32-bit Office component. A 32-bit Office installation needs its compatible files from the same Office generation.
Mixed installations can cause trouble when, for example, one Office version was only partially removed before another was installed.
Check the installed Office entries under Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features. Remove abandoned or duplicate Office installations according to your organization’s requirements, then repair the Office version that should remain.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not copy a DLL from Office 2003 into an Office 2007 folder, or the reverse. Similarly, do not place a 32-bit Office file in a Windows system directory to satisfy an error message. The correct application directory and matching installer determine which binary Windows should load.
Fix 5: Update the Office installation
A failed update can leave an Office installation incomplete.
For supported Click-to-Run Office installations:
- Open Word or another Office program, if possible.
- Select File > Account.
- Select Update Options.
- Select Update Now.
- Restart Windows after the update completes.
- Test the affected application.
If Office will not open, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Office > Modify and run Online Repair instead. An update cannot reliably repair an installation whose required files have already been removed.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other programs are affected
SFC and DISM are designed primarily for Windows system corruption. They are not the main repair tools for an Office-owned DLL. Use them when several unrelated Windows applications report missing or corrupted system files, or when Windows itself is behaving abnormally.

- Restart Windows and test Office again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.
When manually repeating SFC and DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the broader Windows problems involved; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling the Office product remains the definitive fix when dsitf.dll itself belongs to that installation.
Fix 7: Rule out malware or disk damage
Scan the computer if the DLL appeared in an unexpected directory, its signature is invalid, or antivirus reports suspicious activity.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Run a Full scan.
- Follow the recommended action for any detection.
- Repair or reinstall Office after the system is clean.
If other files are disappearing or applications report recurring corruption, back up important data and investigate disk health. A damaged drive can repeatedly corrupt a newly repaired Office installation.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Drivers and Windows Features are usually unrelated
dsitf.dll is not a device driver, DirectX component, Visual C++ runtime, or .NET assembly. Installing a graphics, audio, chipset, or network driver will not normally restore it.
Likewise, turning Windows Features on or off is not a standard fix. Do not enable legacy components merely because a DLL error mentions an old application.
If the complete error separately names a driver, update that driver through the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
When identifying stale drivers manually becomes difficult, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers need attention; its free scan identifies the results, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Driver work will not replace the Office repair if dsitf.dll is the only reported problem.
What not to do
Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong Office generation, or the wrong architecture. Even a genuine-looking copy may not match the rest of the installation and often fails because a dependency or installer registration is damaged.
Use Office repair, the original licensed Office media, or Microsoft’s current Office installation process instead.
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
Do not place dsitf.dll in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are not general-purpose storage for application DLLs. Windows uses defined DLL search rules, and a system-folder copy can create version conflicts or cause another application to load the wrong binary. Microsoft describes these rules in its DLL search order documentation.

Do not run regsvr32 as a generic fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose the appropriate COM or ActiveX registration procedure. It is not a general installation command, and there is no established basis for treating dsitf.dll as a self-registering component.
Only run regsvr32 if a Microsoft or Office installer instruction specifically requires it. Otherwise, use the Office installer to place and configure the file.
If the error remains
Collect these details before escalating:
- The exact error text.
- The executable that displays it.
- The full path of any existing
dsitf.dll. - The Office version and whether multiple Office versions are installed.
- Whether Office is Click-to-Run or media-based.
- The Windows version.
- Any antivirus detection name.
- Relevant entries from Event Viewer.
If the file exists in the expected Office folder but the loader still reports it cannot be found, a missing dependency may be the real cause. If every repair fails, uninstall and reinstall the complete Office product rather than replacing one DLL.
FAQ
Is dsitf.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Microsoft Office installations, especially Office 2003 and Office 2007-era products. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Is dsitf.dll normally 32-bit?
Public records identify it as a 32-bit Win32 Office DLL. Match the file to the Office generation and architecture that installed it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I fix the error with regsvr32?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for DLLs that support registration procedures. Repair or reinstall Office instead.
What if Office is not listed in Installed apps?
Use Control Panel > Programs and Features, or repair the installation from its original licensed media. If that media is unavailable, install a supported Office release through Microsoft.
Should I use System Restore?
Only when the failure began after a known change and Office repair or reinstallation is unavailable. System Restore is not guaranteed to recover the correct Office files and is not a substitute for replacing unsupported Office.
