ext-ms-win-reinfo-query-l1-1-0.dll is usually not a normal application DLL that you should download and copy into Windows. It is a Microsoft Windows API-set contract, a virtual name used by the Windows loader to route software requests to an implementation DLL.
That distinction matters. If a game or application reports this filename, the actual problem may be a damaged application, an incompatible Windows version, a missing dependency, or corrupted Windows components. Do not begin by downloading the named file from a random DLL website or registering it with regsvr32.

For a desktop program
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall, if the program provides that option.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer’s official website or reinstall it from the launcher you originally used.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Launch the program after setup completes.
If the program has its own Repair, Modify, or Change option in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, use that before uninstalling it.
For a game
Open the launcher that installed the game and use its file verification feature. The wording varies:
- Steam: open the game’s Properties, select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Epic Games Launcher: open the game’s three-dot menu and select Manage > Verify.
- Xbox or another launcher: look for Manage, Repair, Verify, or Scan and repair.
The repair worked if the game starts without the API-set error. If verification repeatedly downloads the same files or the error returns after reinstalling, continue with the Windows checks below.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 2: Install Windows updates, then repair Windows
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
Use this path when several applications fail, Windows features behave abnormally, or the error began after an interrupted update, system crash, or disk problem.
Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not require an immediate restart.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
Do not skip the restart. Some protected Windows components are replaced only during reboot.
Run DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends repairing the component store with DISM before running System File Checker.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It can remain at one percentage for several minutes.
- When the prompt returns, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files. It may also say that no integrity violations were found. Either result is useful. If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart and run it once more after DISM has completed.

Repeatedly hunting through system folders and rerunning repairs without knowing what changed is inefficient. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems; its free scan shows what it identifies, while repairs are handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix when only that program fails.
If DISM cannot find repair files
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, do not substitute a downloaded DLL. Use a matching Windows installation source or repair image. The source must correspond closely to the installed Windows version and edition.
The general form is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a valid matching repair source. Microsoft documents this process in its Windows image repair instructions.
Fix 3: Repair only the prerequisite the application actually names
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
ext-ms-win-reinfo-query-l1-1-0.dll is not proof that Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET is missing. Reinstalling every runtime at random can create more confusion.
Check the application’s own error message, installation instructions, or support documentation. A Visual C++ problem is more likely when the message also mentions files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll.
Microsoft provides official Visual C++ v14 installers for:
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application needs the x86 runtime, while a 64-bit application needs the x64 runtime. A computer running both types of programs may legitimately need both packages.
To repair an installed Visual C++ package:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++.
- Select the relevant package’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
Older applications may require an older, separate Visual C++ package. Microsoft states that older releases remain side-by-side rather than being replaced entirely by the latest v14 runtime.
For optional Windows components:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the enabled Windows Features.
- Enable a feature only when the application specifically requires it.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not use this window to guess at a missing API-set contract. API-set resolution is handled by Windows, not enabled by inventing a feature or registry entry.
Fix 4: Update or reinstall a related driver
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A driver is not the default explanation for this filename, but a graphics, storage, chipset, or security-driver update can expose compatibility problems in an application.
Check Windows driver updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Choose Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install a driver only when it matches your hardware.
- Restart Windows.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Disk drives, Network adapters, and System devices.
- Right-click the device related to the failing application.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.

- Restart and test the program.
Manually identifying which of dozens of installed drivers is stale can take time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show the drivers it identifies; the free scan reports the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace repairing the application that produced this error.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and recent changes
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may quarantine a legitimate application file, but the filename alone does not prove that antivirus software removed anything.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error first appeared.
- Restore a file only if its original path, digital signature, and application source are trusted.
- Reinstall the application from its official source if you are uncertain.
Also check whether the problem began after:
- A Windows or application update
- A failed uninstall
- Disk cleanup
- Manual deletion
- A driver installation
- A third-party antivirus change
Do not whitelist a random DLL downloaded from the internet. If the same files disappear again, run a full Microsoft Defender scan and check the drive for broader reliability problems.

Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
System Restore is appropriate when the error started directly after a driver, update, or application installation and a suitable restore point exists.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove recently installed software, drivers, and updates.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, use an in-place repair installation from matching Windows installation media. Back up important files first and follow Microsoft’s current recovery guidance. If Windows cannot boot normally, use Safe Mode or the Windows Recovery Environment rather than improvising offline commands.
Why the filename is confusing
Microsoft documents API-set names with prefixes such as api- and ext- and version endings such as l1-1-0. These names are loader contracts, not necessarily standalone files that every Windows installation exposes in the same way.
The ext- prefix indicates an optional or edition-dependent contract. A public API-set schema associates this contract with an implementation name, but that mapping is not a Microsoft download specification and can vary with the Windows build. Do not treat an online file listing as a universal replacement.
This also explains why a dependency scanner may report the contract as missing even when the real problem is a missing host implementation, an incompatible executable, a damaged component store, or an outdated scanner database.
Should you copy it to System32 or SysWOW64
No. Do not copy a catalog file into either folder.
On 64-bit Windows:
System32contains 64-bit system binaries.SysWOW64contains 32-bit system binaries.
The names are counterintuitive, and the correct location depends on the Windows build and the process architecture. Overwriting either directory with a file from another build can create additional failures. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of the reported module is missing, not that the named file itself is absent.
Is regsvr32 a fix
No. regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components.
An API-set contract is a loader alias, not a COM component. Running:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
regsvr32 ext-ms-win-reinfo-query-l1-1-0.dll
is inappropriate and may produce a DllRegisterServer was not found error. It does not repair API-set resolution.
What usually caused this error
The likely cause depends on the scope:
| What is failing | More likely explanation | Correct first action |
|---|---|---|
| One game or application | Damaged, outdated, or incompatible program | Repair, verify, update, or reinstall it |
| Several programs | Windows component or protected-file corruption | Update Windows, then run DISM and SFC |
| A newly installed program on older Windows | Unsupported Windows API surface | Update Windows or use a compatible program version |
| A program after security software activity | Quarantine or interference | Check protection history |
| Programs with additional runtime errors | Missing application prerequisite | Repair the documented runtime |
| Repeated corruption after repair | Disk, malware, or broader Windows issue | Scan the system and investigate storage health |
FAQ
Is ext-ms-win-reinfo-query-l1-1-0.dll a virus?
The name follows Microsoft’s documented API-set naming convention and is not malware evidence by itself. Malware can use misleading filenames, so inspect the failing application, security history, and digital signatures rather than downloading a replacement.
Is it a Visual C++ or DirectX file?
Not necessarily. The filename is an API-set contract, not proof of a Visual C++ or DirectX installation problem. Repair those runtimes only when the application also identifies them as prerequisites or reports their files.
Does it belong in every System32 folder?
No. Microsoft notes that ext- contracts may be edition-dependent. Public version and size listings are incomplete and should not be treated as an official universal download record.
Why does a dependency scanner say it is missing?
The scanner may not understand the API-set schema for your Windows build. The actual issue may be an incompatible executable, a missing implementation dependency, or damaged Windows components. The program’s launch error and Windows event logs are more useful than blindly replacing the displayed name.
When should I run DISM and SFC?
Run them when multiple applications fail, Windows components malfunction, or the problem follows an update interruption or disk error. Run DISM first, then SFC.
What if only one application still fails after SFC?
Repair or reinstall that application from its official installer or launcher. Windows repair commands cannot replace damaged files that belong exclusively to a third-party program.
