dsp_pitchfork.dll is an old 32-bit Winamp DSP plug-in file, not a Windows system component. It belongs to PitchFork, a DJ-oriented plug-in that provided pitch and speed adjustment, cueing, and beat-matching features.
If Windows says dsp_pitchfork.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest solution is usually to repair the old Winamp installation and restore the complete PitchFork plug-in package. Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL into System32 or SysWOW64.

What dsp_pitchfork.dll is
PitchFork was designed as a DSP plug-in for Winamp. Winamp loaded DSP and effect plug-ins from its own plug-in directory rather than from the Windows system folders.
File indexes identify the file internally as dsp_pitchfork and associate it with LC Audio’s dsp_pitchfork program. Historical descriptions identify PitchFork as a Winamp plug-in used for DJ functions such as:

The LC Audio publisher attribution and old file metadata come from third-party records rather than a current, verified vendor release. Treat the file as legacy software, and obtain it only as part of a trusted original plug-in or application package.
The known file is a 32-bit Windows DLL. That matters because a 64-bit-only audio host cannot normally load a 32-bit Winamp plug-in.
First, identify the program showing the error
Before repairing anything, establish which program is requesting the file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the error window
Read the title bar and message carefully. If the message appears when starting Winamp, the PitchFork plug-in is the likely cause. If it appears when launching a different DJ or audio program, that program may contain an old Winamp-compatible plug-in reference.
Write down:
- The name of the application.
- Whether the error appears during startup or when opening a particular feature.
- Whether Winamp was recently moved, reinstalled, upgraded, or copied to another computer.
- Whether antivirus software recently quarantined a file.
If Winamp is no longer installed, the error may come from an obsolete shortcut, startup entry, scheduled task, or another application that retained a reference to the old plug-in.
Search for the file without downloading it
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC in the left pane.
- In the search box, type
dsp_pitchfork.dll. - Wait for the search to finish.
If the file appears inside a Winamp directory or an old plug-in backup, do not move it yet. Its location and surrounding files help establish whether it belongs to a complete, trusted installation.
If it appears in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64, that is not evidence that it is a Windows component. A third-party DLL can be copied there accidentally. Do not replace it or duplicate it in both folders.

Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the most likely fix.
A missing dsp_pitchfork.dll usually means the PitchFork plug-in was removed, incompletely copied, quarantined, or separated from the rest of the old Winamp installation. Restoring only the DLL can leave related files, configuration data, or plug-in registration information missing.
Close Winamp completely
- Save any work in other applications.
- Close Winamp.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Processes.
- Look for
winamp.exeor another process belonging to the affected audio application. - Select it and choose End task only if the program did not close normally.
Check the Winamp plug-in folder
The folder is commonly located below the Winamp installation directory, for example:
C:Program Files (x86)WinampPlugins
Older portable installations may be elsewhere, such as a custom audio folder or an external drive.
To check:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Open the folder where Winamp is installed.
- Open the
Pluginsfolder. - Look for
dsp_pitchfork.dlland other Winamp plug-in files.
Do not assume that a missing file in one Winamp folder means it is missing from every installation. A computer may have more than one copy of Winamp.

Reinstall from a trusted package

A historical archive may be the only remaining source for this discontinued plug-in. Examine the archive carefully, scan the installer, and avoid packages that provide only a DLL without the original application context.
If the installer offers a destination folder:
- Note the active Winamp installation directory.
- Select its
Pluginsfolder when prompted. - Finish the installation.
- Restart Winamp.
- Open the DSP or effect plug-in preferences.
- Select PitchFork if it is listed.
- Play a test track.
If PitchFork is not listed, check that the installer placed the file in the active Winamp directory rather than an older copy.
Repair Winamp if the option exists
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select Winamp.
- Choose Change, Repair, or a similar option if available.
- Complete the wizard.
- Reinstall the PitchFork plug-in afterward if it is not restored.
If no repair option is present, uninstalling and reinstalling Winamp may be necessary. Back up playlists, skins, and configuration files first if you still need them. Reinstall the plug-in into the new installation rather than copying it into a Windows folder.

How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded when:
- Winamp opens without the missing-DLL message.
- PitchFork appears in the DSP/effect plug-in list.
- A test track plays normally.
- Pitch or speed controls open without another load error.
If Winamp opens but PitchFork fails while being selected, continue with the architecture and dependency checks below.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may remove an old unsigned or unfamiliar plug-in. It may also quarantine a genuinely unsafe replacement downloaded from an untrusted source.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Search for
dsp_pitchfork.dll, the PitchFork installer, or the Winamp plug-in directory.
If the file was quarantined, verify its origin before restoring it. Restore it only when:
- It came from your original, trusted plug-in package.
- The detection is identified as a false positive or the package has been independently verified.
- You have scanned the complete installer and archive.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to install a random DLL. If a newly downloaded replacement is repeatedly detected, remove it and find a legitimate original package instead.
After restoring a trusted file, restart Winamp and test the plug-in. If it is immediately quarantined again, leave it isolated until its provenance, signature, and contents are established.
Fix 3: Confirm that the host can load a 32-bit plug-in
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Public metadata identifies the available dsp_pitchfork.dll file as x86, or 32-bit. A 32-bit DLL normally requires a compatible 32-bit host.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications, so Windows being 64-bit is not itself the problem. The important question is whether the application loading the plug-in is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Check the application process
- Start the affected application if it opens far enough.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Locate the application process.
- Right-click the column headings.
- Choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if that column is available.
On some Windows versions, 32-bit processes are marked with a suffix such as *32. A 64-bit-only host may reject the old plug-in even when the DLL is present and undamaged.
Use a compatible host
If the application is 64-bit-only, the practical choices are:

- Flexible Connectivity for a Variety of External Devices
- Use a compatible 32-bit Winamp installation.
- Use a maintained replacement DSP plug-in that supports the host.
- Remove PitchFork and select another DSP effect.
Do not try to make the file work by copying it between System32 and SysWOW64. Those folders serve different Windows components, and neither is the normal location for a Winamp DSP plug-in.
Fix 4: Disable the stale plug-in if Winamp still opens
Time needed: 5 minutes
If Winamp starts but reports the error when loading its DSP configuration, disable PitchFork rather than restoring it.
- Open Winamp.
- Open Options.
- Select Preferences.
- Find the Plug-ins section.
- Open DSP/Effect.
- Select None or another available DSP plug-in.
- Choose Close or Apply.
- Restart Winamp.
The exact labels can vary between old Winamp builds, but the relevant area is the DSP or effect plug-in list.

If the error appears before Winamp opens, an old configuration may be damaged. Back up the Winamp profile, then temporarily rename its user configuration folder and start Winamp again. If the error disappears, recreate the configuration and select a working DSP plug-in.
Fix 5: Investigate a missing dependency
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that dsp_pitchfork.dll itself is absent. It can mean that the DLL exists but one of the files it needs is missing.
Use a dependency-analysis utility from a trusted source to inspect the DLL. Look for missing dependencies and note their exact names. Do not install every runtime suggested by a generic DLL website.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Install only the runtime that is actually required
If the dependency report identifies a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable guidance to select the architecture required by the application.
A Visual C++ redistributable is not the same thing as dsp_pitchfork.dll, and there is no evidence that reinstalling Visual C++ fixes this plug-in in every case. Install it only when the dependency or the application’s own documentation identifies it.
Do not install DirectX, .NET, or optional Windows features merely because a DLL error occurred. Add those components only when the actual application specifically reports that requirement.
Check optional Windows features only when named
If the error specifically identifies a Windows feature:
- Open Start.
- Type Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Enable only the named feature.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the application again.
This is not a normal repair for a Winamp DSP plug-in.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall related audio drivers
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A graphics or audio driver update is not the primary repair for a missing Winamp plug-in. It becomes relevant when the application also crashes, produces no sound, or reports a device-initialization failure.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test Winamp again.
For a clean reinstall, right-click the audio device, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and then install the driver supplied by the computer or sound-card manufacturer. Do not remove a device unless you know how to restore its correct driver.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through hardware pages and guessing which driver is stale; its free scan shows what it finds, while the full version performs the driver installation. Reinstalling the PitchFork or Winamp package remains the definitive fix when this specific DLL is missing.

Fix 7: Run Windows component repair as a fallback
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Winamp plug-in, so use them when Windows has broader corruption symptoms, such as several built-in tools failing or repeated system file errors.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Do not close the window while the scan is running. A progress percentage that appears to pause does not necessarily indicate a failure.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for the verification to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows, then test Winamp.
The Microsoft procedure is documented in this System File Checker support guide.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 as the first fix
Time needed: 2 minutes
Winamp DSP plug-ins are normally loaded by Winamp. They are not generally registered globally as COM or ActiveX components.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes the command for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
Running this command is therefore normally inappropriate:
regsvr32 dsp_pitchfork.dll
If it reports that the entry point is missing, that indicates the DLL is not a self-registering component. It does not mean that another regsvr32 variation will repair the Winamp plug-in.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading dsp_pitchfork.dll by itself from a random DLL site can introduce several problems:
- The file may contain malware.
- It may be the wrong architecture.
- It may be a different build from the one your application expects.
- It may be modified or incomplete.
- The original installer may also require other files.
- Replacing the DLL may hide the real problem, such as a damaged Winamp installation or missing dependency.
The safe sources are your original PitchFork installer, a complete Winamp plug-in package you already trust, or a carefully vetted historical archive containing the full software package. There is no verified current official LC Audio download page or maintained PitchFork support channel established here, so do not assume a page using the LC Audio name is authoritative.

Frequently asked questions
Is dsp_pitchfork.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with the old PitchFork DSP plug-in for Winamp. It should not normally be present in System32 or SysWOW64.
Does reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Only if dependency analysis or the application’s error identifies a required Visual C++ runtime. Visual C++ is not a replacement for the PitchFork plug-in.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. Put the complete plug-in package in the active Winamp Plugins directory. Do not copy it into both system folders.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Normally no. Winamp loads DSP plug-ins itself, and ordinary plug-ins do not need global registration.
Why does the file exist, but Winamp still says it is missing?
The file may be in the wrong Winamp installation, may have a missing dependency, or may be incompatible with the host’s architecture. The wording can also mean that a dependency cannot be found.
Can a 64-bit version of Windows run PitchFork?
Often, yes, if the host is a compatible 32-bit application. A 64-bit-only host generally cannot load this known 32-bit plug-in.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What if I no longer need PitchFork?
