“The program can’t start because neamr.dll is missing from your computer.” neamr.dll is a Nero audio-decoder component, so the safest fix is normally to repair or reinstall the Nero program that originally installed it.
You may also see:

- “Neamr.dll not found.”
- “Error loading neamr.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “This application failed to start because Neamr.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.”
These messages are commonly indexed error wording rather than canonical Microsoft messages. The name usually points to a damaged, incomplete, or partially removed Nero installation.

Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose where to start:
- The error names Nero or appears when starting an older Nero application: repair or reinstall Nero first.
- Nero disappeared after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection history before reinstalling.
- The error started after uninstalling, cleaning, or updating Nero: reinstall the same edition, or use Nero’s cleanup utility before reinstalling.
- The file exists but the message says a module is missing: reinstall Nero because a dependency may be missing.
- The error began after a Windows problem or failed update: run DISM and SFC after repairing Nero.
- You no longer use the application requesting the file: uninstall that obsolete application instead of restoring its DLL.
- The file is in an unusual folder: treat it cautiously and scan the computer rather than copying it into a Windows folder.
Do not begin by downloading neamr.dll from a random DLL website. A downloaded file can contain malware, belong to a different Nero release, use the wrong architecture, or leave the actual damaged installation untouched.

The file is associated with the Nero multimedia software family. Historical Nero installations used Ahead Software AG branding, later associated with Nero AG. Older Nero suites and their audio or video filters are the most likely applications to request it.
This is not a Windows system library. There is no verified reason to expect it in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
A Nero 8 file inventory places it in:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesNeroDSFilterNeAMR.dll
The capitalization may differ because Windows file paths are not case-sensitive. The important point is that it belongs with the Nero installation or a shared Nero component directory, not in a generic Windows system folder.

Public file catalogs report conflicting versions and architectures. That means there is no single version, size, or bitness that is safe to copy for every installation. Filename matching alone is not enough.
Fix 1: Repair Nero from Windows
Repair is the least disruptive option when Nero is still installed.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the Nero application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the Nero application again.
If the repair completes successfully, Windows or the Nero installer should restore the missing component without removing your personal settings.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the Nero program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the computer and test Nero.

How to tell whether repair worked
The repair worked if the Nero program starts without the neamr.dll message and the operation that previously failed, such as opening or converting media, completes normally.

Fix 2: Reinstall the original Nero program
A reinstall is the most likely definitive fix because it restores the decoder together with the matching Nero files and dependencies.
First identify the application requesting the file. Look at the title bar or the full error dialog. Then check Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features for the corresponding Nero edition.

Remove the damaged installation
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the Nero program.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
For older desktop installations, use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select Nero, and choose Uninstall.
Do not manually delete shared Nero folders before trying the official uninstaller. Nero components can be shared by more than one product.
Install Nero again
Use Nero’s official online or offline installer for the edition you own. If you have an offline package, extract it first when necessary and run its installer executable. Do not obtain an individual DLL from a download catalog.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Open the Nero application.
- Repeat the action that produced the error.
- Check whether the decoder-related operation now works.
If the same old Nero installation refuses to uninstall or reinstall because remnants remain, use Nero’s official FirstAidKit. It is intended to remove leftover Nero files and registry entries. Preserve your personal Nero data and product credentials first, because a cleanup can remove installation information.
Restart after cleanup, then install Nero again from its official installer.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate Nero component, or it can flag a suspicious replacement. Check the quarantine record rather than immediately disabling protection.

- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
neamr.dllor the Nero installation folder. - Open the entry and review its original path, detection name, and date.
- Compare the path with the Nero installation you recognize.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:
- It came from the legitimate Nero installation.
- Its original path is consistent with the installed program.
- The security alert has been reviewed.
- The system has been scanned.
- You are confident it is a false positive.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can expose the device. If the entry is unclear, do not restore it. Reinstall Nero instead, then run a full security scan.
If the file repeatedly disappears after reinstalling, investigate the antivirus detection, scan the computer, and do not add an exception merely because the filename is familiar.
Fix 4: Check whether a dependency is actually missing
A message naming neamr.dll does not always mean that the file itself is absent. Windows can report a missing module when the named DLL exists but another library it needs cannot be loaded.
Check the likely Nero directory:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesNeroDSFilter
The file may instead be under a different Nero installation directory. Do not copy it from one release into another.

If NeAMR.dll is present but Nero still fails:
- Close Nero.
- Run the Nero repair option if available.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall Nero.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the same Nero edition from its official installer.
- Test the application again.
Reinstalling the parent application is safer than trying to identify and copy individual dependencies. The installer can place compatible components together.
Fix 5: Check the Windows installation with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker are secondary checks here. They repair protected Windows components, not arbitrary third-party Nero files, so they will not normally recreate a missing neamr.dll.
Run DISM first, then SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Nero again.
Do not close the Command Prompt while either scan is running. If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, restart and retest. If both commands complete without resolving the Nero error, return to the Nero repair or reinstall path.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help when neamr.dll disappeared immediately after a cleanup, installation, update, or driver change and a suitable restore point exists.

rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the applications and drivers that may be removed or restored.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restore.
System Restore does not replace a damaged Nero installer in every case. If the error remains, reinstall Nero from its official source.
Fix 7: Do not use Device Manager or Windows Features for this DLL
neamr.dll is an application component, not a Windows device driver. Device Manager will not normally restore it.
Similarly, enabling or disabling optional Windows features is not a normal repair for this file. Do not install DirectX, .NET, or the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable solely because neamr.dll is missing. Those components are relevant only if the error explicitly names one of them or diagnostics identify a separate dependency.

If the error appears inside another application that bundles Nero components, use that application’s Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair function first. This is particularly important for software that manages its own installation files.
For a driver-related error, use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver package or Windows Update rather than trying to repair neamr.dll through Device Manager.

32-bit and 64-bit considerations
A 32-bit application needs its compatible 32-bit Nero component, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. Do not assume that a 64-bit copy of a similarly named file will work.

System32because the name matches. - Copying a 64-bit DLL into a Nero folder used by a 32-bit application.
- Replacing an existing file with one from a different Nero edition.
- Combining files from separate downloads or installations.
- Treating conflicting catalog metadata as a universal compatibility guide.
The Nero installer is the safest way to obtain the matching architecture and related files. If the error remains after reinstalling, record the exact application name, Nero edition, Windows edition, full file path, and any Event Viewer application error.

regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for restoring or repairing DLL files.
For that reason, do not run:
regsvr32 neamr.dll
merely because a DLL page recommends it. If Windows reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, that does not prove neamr.dll is damaged. It may simply be a decoder loaded privately by Nero rather than a self-registering Windows component.

Reinstall the parent Nero application instead.
Do not download a replacement DLL
Random DLL download sites cannot reliably tell you which Nero release, architecture, or dependency set your application requires. A replacement may be malicious, incompatible, unsigned, or ineffective because the real problem is a missing dependency or damaged installation.
Never place an unverified copy in System32 or SysWOW64. That can create system-wide loading problems and makes the original cause harder to diagnose.
Use, in order:
- Nero’s installed repair option.
- Nero’s official installer.
- Nero’s official cleanup utility when remnants block installation.
- Windows Security Protection history and scanning.
- Microsoft’s DISM, SFC, or System Restore tools for secondary Windows issues.
If the error still appears
Collect these details before making more changes:
- The exact error text.
- The executable name shown in the message.
- The full location of any existing
NeAMR.dll. - The Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition.
- The Nero product and edition.
- Whether antivirus quarantine shows the file.
- The result of Nero repair or reinstall.
- Any entry under Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application.
If the file is found outside a recognized Nero directory, has a suspicious signature, or returns after deletion, run a full security scan. Do not whitelist it solely because its filename is correct.
