dsp_sps.dll is a Winamp DSP plug-in, not a Windows system file. If dsp_sps.dll is missing or will not load, repair the Winamp installation or the application using its Winamp DSP bridge instead of copying the file into System32.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows files, answer these three questions:

- Which program shows the error? It may be Winamp, or another audio player using a Winamp DSP bridge.
- When does it happen? Note whether the message appears when Windows starts, when Winamp opens, or when playback begins.
- Is the host 32-bit or 64-bit? Public file metadata commonly identifies
dsp_sps.dllas an x86 plug-in. A 32-bit Winamp plug-in must be loaded by a compatible host.
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because dsp_sps.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading dsp_sps.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because dsp_sps.dll was not found.”
- “dsp_sps.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error.”
The last three messages do not always mean the file itself is absent. Windows may be reporting a missing dependency, damaged installation, or architecture mismatch.
What dsp_sps.dll actually is
dsp_sps.dll belongs to Winamp’s Signal Processor Studio DSP/effects plug-in. Winamp documents this plug-in under Preferences → Plug-ins → DSP/Effect and describes effects including mono, chorus, reverb, and pitch.

It normally belongs in Winamp’s plug-in directory, commonly:
C:Program FilesWinampPluginsdsp_sps.dll
C:Program Files (x86)WinampPluginsdsp_sps.dll
Your path may differ if Winamp was installed elsewhere or its plug-in directory was changed. The important distinction is that this is an application plug-in. It does not belong in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not treat it like a Windows component, DirectX file, audio driver, or general Visual C++ runtime.
Fix 1: Disable the DSP plug-in first
If Winamp opens, disable the plug-in before reinstalling anything. This quickly confirms whether the rest of Winamp is working.
- Open Winamp.
- Press Ctrl+P or open Options → Preferences.
- Select Plug-ins in the left panel.
- Choose DSP/Effect.
- Select (none).
- Click Close.
- Restart Winamp and test playback.
If Winamp now plays normally, the problem is isolated to the DSP chain. Leave the plug-in disabled, or reinstall Winamp using the repair steps below.
If Winamp will not open, close it from Task Manager and continue with the repair.
Fix 2: Repair Winamp from Windows
A damaged or incomplete Winamp installation is the most likely cause. Repairing the owning program restores its plug-in files alongside the files they depend on.

Try the classic repair path
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select Winamp.
- Click Change, Repair, or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.
- Keep the DSP or effects plug-in component selected.
- Complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows and test Winamp.
If no repair option is available, use a clean reinstall.
Reinstall Winamp safely
- Back up playlists and, if needed, the folder
%AppData%Winamp. - Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Winamp.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall and finish the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Download Winamp only from its official desktop-player source.
- Install it again, keeping the DSP/Effect plug-in component selected.
- Open Winamp and test playback before restoring optional plug-ins.
If the installer lets you choose a destination, note the installation path. Check that dsp_sps.dll is under that installation’s Plugins folder, not a Windows system folder.
If reinstalling fixes the error, the original installation was incomplete, corrupted, or missing the plug-in. Copying a standalone DLL would not have repaired those surrounding files.
Fix 3: Check the application that actually owns the error
If the dialog appears in another player, identify that program before changing Winamp.

Foobar2000, for instance, has documented support for Winamp DSP plug-ins through a bridge component. In that situation, the bridge application may be the failing host even though dsp_sps.dll came from Winamp.
- Read the title bar and full error message.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Check which application is running when the error appears.
- Repair or reinstall that application and its Winamp bridge.
- Confirm that the bridge supports the plug-in’s architecture.
- Do not copy
dsp_sps.dllinto the other program’s folder unless that application explicitly supports Winamp DSP plug-ins and specifies that location.
If disabling the DSP plug-in lets Winamp work but the bridge still fails, repair the bridge or leave the effect disabled.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an application plug-in. Do not assume a detection is a false positive simply because the filename is familiar.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving Winamp or
dsp_sps.dll. - Check the detected file’s original path.
- Restore or allow it only if it came from a legitimate, intact Winamp installation.
- Reinstall Winamp if the file was removed or the installation path is unclear.
- Run another scan after restoring it.
If Windows Security detects the restored file again, do not repeatedly override the warning. Remove the installation, scan the system, and obtain Winamp again from its official source.

Fix 5: Resolve architecture or dependency errors
A file can exist and still fail to load. The usual reasons are:
- A 32-bit plug-in is being loaded by an incompatible host.
- Winamp and the bridge were installed from mismatched packages.
- A dependency required by the plug-in is missing.
- The DLL is damaged.
If the error names another file, that name matters. For example, an error involving VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll points toward the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime rather than directly toward dsp_sps.dll.
Install the matching Microsoft Visual C++ package from Microsoft, normally the x86 package for a 32-bit Winamp host. Do not install random runtime DLLs individually.
To check the host architecture:
- Open Task Manager.
- Select the Details tab.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Check whether the host is 32-bit or 64-bit.
A 32-bit Winamp installation commonly resides under Program Files (x86). That folder alone does not prove which plug-in version is correct, but it is a useful clue. Keep Winamp, its DSP plug-ins, and any bridge components from compatible installations.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this plug-in
regsvr32 is not a routine repair for dsp_sps.dll.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 command is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. Winamp DSP plug-ins are loaded through Winamp’s DSP plug-in interface, not registered as ordinary COM components.
Running commands such as these is therefore normally unhelpful:

regsvr32 dsp_sps.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32dsp_sps.dll
They may produce another error without repairing Winamp. If the plug-in is correct, place it in the configured Winamp Plugins directory by repairing the application, not by registering it globally.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows is failing broadly
Windows component corruption is not the normal cause of one missing Winamp plug-in. Use these commands only if Windows Update, installers, or several unrelated programs are also failing.

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Winamp repair.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. System File Checker repairs protected Windows files. Neither command normally recreates a missing Winamp plug-in, so reinstall Winamp if dsp_sps.dll remains absent.

A missing dsp_sps.dll is not primarily an audio-driver problem. Reinstall a sound driver only when you also have symptoms such as no audio in multiple applications, an unavailable output device, or Device Manager errors.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
For a clean driver reinstall:
- In Device Manager, right-click the audio device.
- Choose Uninstall device.
- Select the option to remove the driver only if you have a known replacement available.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver from the computer or audio-device manufacturer.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are stale instead of making you hunt through hardware pages; the full version performs driver installation, but a driver update will not replace a missing Winamp plug-in.

Fix 9: Use recovery options only as a last resort
If the problem began after a failed restore, disk issue, or suspicious system change:
- Run a full scan in Windows Security.
- Check the drive for errors from File Explorer → This PC → right-click the drive → Properties → Tools → Check.
- Open Settings → System → Recovery.
- Use System Restore only if a suitable restore point predates the failure.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings but does not normally affect personal files. It should not be your first step for a standalone Winamp plug-in problem.
Avoid unsafe DLL fixes
Do not download dsp_sps.dll from random DLL catalogues or copy it into both system folders. That approach can introduce malware, use the wrong architecture, combine files from incompatible releases, and leave the actual Winamp installation broken.

The safe sources are:
- Winamp’s official desktop-player installer.
- A legitimate existing Winamp installation on the same computer.
- Microsoft’s official runtime packages when the error explicitly names a Microsoft dependency.
Keep the file in Winamp’s configured Plugins directory and let the owning installer restore its supporting files.

A dependency may be missing, the host may have the wrong architecture, or the installation may be damaged.
What if I do not use Winamp?
Find the executable named in the error. A compatibility layer or another audio player may be trying to load a Winamp DSP plug-in. Repair that host or remove its DSP configuration.
Should I reinstall DirectX or audio drivers?
Not for this specific error unless the message identifies a related dependency or you have broader audio failures. Repair Winamp first.
