The dssec.dll error is not normally a Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or graphics-driver problem. dssec.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called Directory Service Security UI, used by Active Directory administration tools to display security-property pages.
If the error appears in Active Directory Users and Computers, Group Policy, or another Windows administration console, repair or install the relevant RSAT feature first. If Windows itself reports that the file is damaged or missing, use DISM and SFC rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

What is dssec.dll?
dssec.dll is part of Microsoft Windows and provides functionality for Active Directory security interfaces. Microsoft documents its DSCreateSecurityPage API as creating a security-properties page for an Active Directory object. The related API documentation is in the dssec.h reference.

- Active Directory Users and Computers
- Active Directory object security pages
- Group Policy administration
- AD DS and AD LDS management tools
- Other Microsoft administrative consoles that use Active Directory security interfaces
Microsoft’s documentation also discusses dssec.dat and its relationship with the Active Directory Users and Computers ACL editor in KB 296490.
That does not mean every Windows installation has the same copy in the same place. Windows builds, editions, optional features, and process architecture affect which files are installed. A 64-bit Windows installation can contain a 64-bit system copy in %windir%System32 and a 32-bit copy in %windir%SysWOW64. Windows file-system redirection can direct a 32-bit program to the 32-bit system directory, as explained in Microsoft’s file-system redirector documentation.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Most likely direction |
|---|---|
| Active Directory Users and Computers or Group Policy fails | Install or repair the RSAT AD DS and AD LDS tools |
| The file is missing from a Windows system path | Run DISM, then SFC |
| The error began after Defender detected a file | Check Protection history and repair Windows |
| A 32-bit tool fails on 64-bit Windows | Check whether the correct architecture is installed |
| “The specified module could not be found” appears | A dependency may be missing, even if dssec.dll exists |
| The problem began after an update or cleanup | Try System Restore or Windows repair options |
| A game shows the error with no Active Directory context | Identify the actual executable before assuming the game needs this file |
There is no verified evidence that a particular mainstream game requires dssec.dll. If a game launcher reports the error, inspect the complete error path and the executable that triggered it. Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++ or DirectX will restore this Windows administrative component.
Fix 1: Install or repair the RSAT Active Directory tools
This is the best first fix when the error appears in an Active Directory or Windows administration tool.
The relevant Windows capability is:
Rsat.ActiveDirectory.DS-LDS.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0
Microsoft lists the RSAT client prerequisites as Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise, or Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise, with administrative rights. The supported installation process is described in Microsoft’s RSAT installation guide.
Install RSAT through Windows Settings
- Open Start and select Settings.
- On Windows 11, select System, then Optional features.
- On Windows 10, open Apps, then Optional features.
- Select View features or Add a feature.
- Search for RSAT or Active Directory.
- Select RSAT: Active Directory Domain Services and Lightweight Directory Services Tools.
- Select Next, then Install.
- Wait for Windows to complete the Feature on Demand installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the affected tool again.
If the installation succeeds and the administrative console opens without the error, the problem was probably a missing or removed RSAT payload rather than a damaged standalone DLL.
Install RSAT with PowerShell
Open Windows Terminal or PowerShell as administrator:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).
- Check the capability state:
Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name Rsat.ActiveDirectory.DS-LDS.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0
- If the state is not
Installed, run:
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name Rsat.ActiveDirectory.DS-LDS.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0
- Restart Windows and test the administrative tool again.
On Windows Server, use an elevated PowerShell window:
Install-WindowsFeature -Name RSAT-AD-Tools -IncludeAllSubFeature
If you are installing the AD DS server role and its management tools, Microsoft documents this command:
Install-WindowsFeature -Name AD-Domain-Services -IncludeManagementTools
See Microsoft’s AD DS installation documentation for the server-side procedure.
If RSAT installation fails
An RSAT installation can fail with 0x800f0954 when enterprise policy or WSUS prevents Windows from obtaining Feature on Demand content. This is common on managed systems where optional components must come from an approved source.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not download an arbitrary CAB file and force it into the system. Ask your administrator for an approved Windows Update or matching Features on Demand source. Microsoft’s RSAT download and troubleshooting information is available through the RSAT Download Center.
Windows 10 version 1809 and later use Features on Demand for this capability. Older standalone RSAT packages were version-specific, so an old installer may not match your current Windows build.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this fix when:
- RSAT is installed but the tool still reports
dssec.dll - Windows says the file is corrupt or not designed for Windows
- The file disappeared from a system directory
- The problem began after an interrupted update
- Several protected Windows components are failing
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired store to replace damaged protected system files.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows after DISM completes.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows once SFC finishes, then retry the program.
Microsoft provides the commands and explanation in its System File Checker instructions and DISM repair guidance.
Interpret the SFC result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC did not find damaged protected files. Check RSAT installation, dependencies, quarantine, and architecture.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the affected tool.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, continue to the Windows repair options below.
You can also target a known path:
sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSystem32dssec.dll
On 64-bit Windows, use the actual path reported by the failing program. A 32-bit process may use:
sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSysWOW64dssec.dll
Do not blindly run both commands or copy the same file into both directories. The correct location depends on the process architecture and Windows system redirection.
Manually checking component integrity and repeating DISM and SFC can become difficult when several files are involved. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft repair commands remain the appropriate baseline.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a system component after a detection. Do not restore a quarantined DLL automatically.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand any recent detection related to
dssec.dll. - Check the reported path and threat details.
- Restore the item only if you have verified that it is a genuine Microsoft-signed file from the expected Windows location.
- If the file is suspicious, leave it quarantined.
- Run DISM and SFC to restore the legitimate Windows component.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
If the file repeatedly disappears, investigate malware, security policy, cleanup software, and disk errors rather than repeatedly downloading replacements.
Fix 4: Check the file path and architecture
A 32-bit program cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit program cannot use a 32-bit DLL as a substitute. On 64-bit Windows, System32 generally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files used through Windows compatibility mechanisms.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type.
To check the path involved in the error, copy the complete path from the message. If no path is shown, identify the executable that produces the error and check whether it is a 32-bit or 64-bit program through its documentation or publisher.
Do not:
- Copy a 32-bit file into
System32 - Copy a 64-bit file into
SysWOW64 - Replace both directories with one downloaded file
- Rename another DLL to
dssec.dll - Use a file from a different Windows build without controlled servicing
Reinstalling the correct RSAT capability, or letting SFC restore the file, is safer because Windows can supply the matching architecture and servicing state.
Fix 5: Check whether a dependency is actually missing
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that dssec.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found dssec.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies.

This can happen when:
- Another Windows component is damaged
- The application uses the wrong architecture
- A required system module is missing
- The file is incompatible with the current build
- A security product removed a related component
First run DISM and SFC, then repair or reinstall RSAT. Avoid downloading individual dependency files because that can create a chain of mismatched files.

Fix 6: Install pending Windows updates
A failed or incomplete update can leave the component store or optional feature payload in an inconsistent state.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check for updates again after the restart.
- Retry RSAT installation or run DISM and SFC again.
If the problem started immediately after a recent update and a suitable restore point exists, System Restore may be more appropriate than repeatedly replacing files.

System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can roll back system files, settings, drivers, and installed software. Microsoft’s procedure is described in its System Restore guidance.
Fix 8: Reinstall the current Windows version
If Windows 11 still reports system corruption after DISM and SFC, use the built-in repair reinstall when it is available.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the device connected to power.
- After Windows restarts, install or repair the RSAT feature again if necessary.
Microsoft describes this option as reinstalling the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings. See Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.
If that option is unavailable or fails, use a properly matched Windows installation image for an in-place repair. Back up important data first and confirm the edition and language match the installed system.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 dssec.dll
as a routine repair.
Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a utility that calls a DLL’s DllRegisterServer or DllInstall entry points. It is not a general-purpose command for restoring, repairing, or loading every DLL. The documented dssec.dll API is focused on Active Directory security interfaces, not normal manual registration. Microsoft’s regsvr32 reference explains what the command actually does.
If regsvr32 reports that an entry point is missing, that does not prove Windows is repaired or broken. Use RSAT installation, DISM, and SFC instead.
Why downloading dssec.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
- A file that does not match the installed component store
- A replacement that hides the real missing dependency
Copying a file into System32 or SysWOW64 can also create a servicing mismatch. The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows Optional Features, RSAT, a matching Microsoft Features on Demand source, or a verified Windows installation image used by an administrator.
A manual replacement is appropriate only for controlled offline servicing with a matching image and verified signature. It is not the correct consumer repair method.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAre drivers involved?
dssec.dll is not a graphics, chipset, audio, or device driver. Device Manager will not normally repair it.
Use Device Manager only if the same incident also includes a separate hardware problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and review the error code.
- Update or reinstall that device’s driver through an approved source.
Do not expect a GPU-driver reinstall to replace an Active Directory security UI component. Hunting through many driver packages can also obscure the real Windows or RSAT issue. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver problems and identify available driver updates, while driver installation through the full version is optional and unrelated to the normal dssec.dll repair path.
What information to collect if the error remains
If the fixes above do not work, collect:
- The exact error text
- The executable that triggers it
- The complete file path shown
- Windows edition and build
- 32-bit or 64-bit system type
- RSAT capability status
- DISM and SFC results
- Any Windows Security quarantine event
- Recent updates, software installations, or cleanup operations
- Relevant entries from
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log - Relevant entries from
C:WindowsLogsDISMdism.log
This information distinguishes an absent RSAT feature from a damaged Windows component, wrong architecture, quarantine event, or missing dependency.

FAQ
Is dssec.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. Its documented description is Directory Service Security UI, and it is associated with Microsoft Windows Active Directory administration components.
Is dssec.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
No verified evidence connects it to Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, graphics drivers, or a particular game runtime.
Does Windows Home include RSAT?
Microsoft’s documented RSAT client prerequisites are Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise and Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise, with administrative rights. If you use Home, the RSAT installation path may not be supported for your edition.
Should I install dsa.msc separately?
dsa.msc is the Active Directory Users and Computers console. The supported approach is to install the relevant RSAT Active Directory Domain Services and Lightweight Directory Services Tools capability rather than downloading individual console files.
Will SFC always restore dssec.dll?
No. SFC can repair a protected Windows file when the component store and correct payload are available. It may not restore an optional RSAT payload that was never installed, and it may fail when the component store or repair source is damaged.
Why does the error say a specified module is missing when dssec.dll exists?
The loader may be unable to find a dependency required by dssec.dll. Check architecture and run DISM followed by SFC before replacing individual files.
Should I copy dssec.dll into both system folders?
No. Do not copy the same file into System32 and SysWOW64. Reinstall the matching Windows feature or use SFC so Windows supplies the correct architecture.
Is a game necessarily broken if it mentions dssec.dll?
No. There is no verified evidence tying this file to a specific mainstream game. Check the full executable path and error context first. If the game installation itself is identified, use its official repair or verification process, but do not assume a random DLL download is the solution.
