cldshowx.dll Not Found: Restore PowerDVD on Windows 11 and 10

By VGSources Team 11 min read

“This application failed to start because cldshowx.dll was not found”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cldshowx.dll file is a CyberLink PowerDVD application component, most strongly associated with PowerDVD 5.0. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, the safest repair is to restore the exact PowerDVD installation from its original installer or manufacturer recovery media, not to download a replacement DLL.

The same problem may appear as:

  • “The file cldshowx.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “A required component is missing: cldshowx.dll.”
  • “Error loading cldshowx.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Failed to load cldshowx.dll.”
  • “The program can’t start because cldshowx.dll is missing from your computer.”

These are common reported variants, not necessarily official CyberLink or Microsoft diagnostic messages. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by cldshowx.dll is missing.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list before changing anything:

  • PowerDVD stopped launching after an uninstall, cleanup, or failed update: repair or reinstall the same PowerDVD edition and build.
  • Windows Security or another antivirus removed the file: inspect quarantine, then reinstall from the original trusted source.
  • You copied the DLL from another computer or version: remove that replacement and reinstall PowerDVD properly.
  • The file exists beside PowerDVD but the error remains: check dependencies, compatibility, and the exact executable that is failing.
  • The error appeared after PowerDVD was removed: remove the stale startup entry or remaining CyberLink component.
  • Several applications are reporting unrelated DLL errors: check Windows components with DISM and SFC.
  • PowerDVD launches but playback fails: update the display and optical-drive drivers only after confirming the application itself is intact.
  • The file is in a temporary, startup, or unrelated folder: treat it as suspicious and scan it rather than assuming it is legitimate.

cldshowx.dll is not established as a Windows component. It normally belongs in the PowerDVD program directory, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

1. Confirm which program is requesting cldshowx.dll

Before reinstalling anything, identify the executable that produces the message.

Check the shortcut

  1. Right-click the shortcut that launches the failing program.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Read the Target field.
  5. Look for a PowerDVD executable or a path containing CyberLink or PowerDVD.
  6. Select Cancel when finished.

If the target points to an old backup drive, removable disk, or deleted folder, the shortcut itself may be stale.

Check the file location

If cldshowx.dll is already present:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to the PowerDVD installation folder.
  3. Right-click cldshowx.dll.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Check the Details tab for the internal name CLDShowX.dll and CyberLink-related product information.
  6. Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is available.
  7. Check the General tab for the full path.

A file in the expected PowerDVD directory is more consistent with a legitimate installation than a file in a temporary folder, a user profile directory, or a random application folder. A CyberLink-looking filename alone does not prove that a file is authentic.

Do not assume that every CLDShowX.dll from every PowerDVD release is interchangeable. Public metadata associates the file most strongly with PowerDVD 5.0 and also with later CyberLink Player and PowerDVD installations. Edition, build, architecture, and dependencies can differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Repair or reinstall the exact PowerDVD installation

This is the most likely solution because cldshowx.dll is an application DLL, not a normal Windows system file.

Use the original PowerDVD CD or DVD, an OEM recovery disc, the installer supplied with the computer or optical drive, or a verified installer obtained from CyberLink. A current PowerDVD download is not guaranteed to repair an old PowerDVD 5 installation.

Try repair first

Some installers provide a repair option.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select PowerDVD or the relevant CyberLink entry.
  5. Choose Change, Modify, or Repair if available.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Launch PowerDVD from its normal shortcut.

If the program opens without the missing-file message, the repair restored the application files.

Reinstall from trusted installation media

If no repair option exists:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Search for PowerDVD and related CyberLink entries.
  5. Select the menu beside PowerDVD.
  6. Choose Uninstall.
  7. Preserve your license or activation information if the uninstaller asks for it.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Run the original PowerDVD installer.
  10. Install the same edition and matching build where possible.
  11. Restart Windows again.
  12. Test PowerDVD before restoring old program files or backups.

If PowerDVD is not listed, run setup.exe from the original installation media. If the installer reports that the program is already installed, check Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features for a remaining CyberLink entry, then restart and run setup again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy only cldshowx.dll from another PowerDVD folder. The program may also require matching codecs, licensing files, configuration files, and other DLLs.

If PowerDVD came with a computer or drive

Older PowerDVD copies were often bundled with a computer, DVD drive, or other hardware. In that situation, the OEM installer may be the only compatible source.

Look for:

  • The original disc supplied with the computer or drive.
  • A recovery partition or manufacturer recovery utility.
  • The original product key or activation record.
  • A CyberLink installer saved in your personal software archive.

Do not replace an OEM installation with an unrelated PowerDVD generation merely because both products use the PowerDVD name.

3. Check antivirus quarantine before restoring the file

Security software may quarantine or delete a damaged-looking application file. Do not immediately disable protection.

Windows Security steps

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Open any entry that references the PowerDVD installation directory or cldshowx.dll.
  8. Record the detection path and reason.
  9. Do not choose Allow on device unless you have verified the original installer and file source.

If the file was removed from a legitimate PowerDVD directory, the safer solution is to reinstall from trusted original media. Scan the installer before running it. Restoring a quarantined file without validating its source can reintroduce a modified or unsafe file.

If the detection points to a temporary directory, a startup location, or an unrelated program, leave it quarantined and perform a full system scan.

4. Check whether the named file is really a missing dependency

Windows may name cldshowx.dll even when the actual failure is caused by another module that PowerDVD needs.

This can happen when:

  • The DLL exists but is damaged.
  • A dependent DLL was removed.
  • The wrong PowerDVD generation is installed.
  • A 32-bit application is using an incompatible replacement.
  • Windows blocked the file.
  • The application is too old for the current Windows environment.

Look for the complete message in Event Viewer:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Select Application.
  5. Choose Filter Current Log in the right pane.
  6. Select Error under event level.
  7. Reproduce the PowerDVD failure.
  8. Look for an entry at the same time.
  9. Read the General and Details tabs.

Record the failing executable, faulting module, and any named dependency. Do not install random Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET packages unless the complete error specifically identifies one of them. No reliable evidence shows that a Microsoft runtime alone supplies cldshowx.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Do not infer the architecture, size, hash, or version of a particular cldshowx.dll from the filename. Those details can vary by build, and an authoritative source does not verify one universal set of values.

A 32-bit application normally uses the DLLs supplied for that application. System32 and SysWOW64 are Windows-managed locations with confusing historical names; neither is a general-purpose storage folder for application DLLs.

Keep the PowerDVD DLL beside the PowerDVD executable that loads it. Do not mix files from PowerDVD 5, PowerDVD 8, or a later release.

5. Use compatibility settings for old PowerDVD versions

PowerDVD 5 predates current Windows releases and is no longer a modern supported application. Reinstalling it may restore the missing file but not guarantee that the program will run correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try the built-in compatibility troubleshooter:

  1. Right-click the PowerDVD shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run compatibility troubleshooter.
  5. Follow the prompts.
  6. Test the recommended settings.
  7. If they help, select Apply these settings.

You can also test administrator access:

  1. Right-click the PowerDVD shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open Compatibility.
  4. Select Run this program as an administrator.
  5. Select Apply, then OK.
  6. Launch PowerDVD.

Use administrator mode as a compatibility test, not as a substitute for repairing the installation. If it works only as administrator, check whether PowerDVD is trying to write into a protected or obsolete program directory.

6. Repair Windows components only when broader corruption is suspected

DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They do not recreate a missing CyberLink-owned DLL, so run them when Windows itself is showing corruption or several unrelated applications are failing.

First install pending Windows updates and restart.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish.
  3. Restart Windows.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows, then test PowerDVD.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application again. If it reports that it found no integrity violations, the missing file is even more likely to be an application installation problem. Microsoft’s documented System File Checker procedure explains the supported DISM-before-SFC sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeating DISM and SFC will not replace cldshowx.dll when the file belongs to PowerDVD. Outbyte PC Repair can show what it finds during a scan, which may be easier than repeatedly running repairs without knowing what changed; its repair action is handled by the full version, and reinstalling PowerDVD remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.

7. Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair

regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for making every DLL work.

Microsoft documents the command in its regsvr32 reference. The usual syntax is:

regsvr32 filename.dll

However, there is no reliable evidence that CLDShowX.dll is an ActiveX or COM registration DLL. Running:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 cldshowx.dll

may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found. That normally means registration is not the correct installation method, not that the file should be downloaded again.

8. Check drivers only after PowerDVD itself is repaired

A missing cldshowx.dll is not normally a display-driver problem. If PowerDVD opens after reinstalling but playback, video output, or optical-drive detection fails, then check the relevant drivers.

Update the display driver

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the listed graphics device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Install an offered driver.
  8. Restart Windows.

For disc-detection issues, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives and check the listed device. Do not uninstall hardware unless Device Manager shows a specific error or the hardware manufacturer instructs you to do so.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for missing or stale drivers instead of making you identify versions across multiple hardware vendors; the driver installation is completed by the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling PowerDVD when the application DLL is missing.

Use Windows Features only when the error names a feature

Do not enable every legacy Windows component to solve a PowerDVD DLL message. If the full error specifically identifies a Windows feature:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Turn Windows features on or off.
  3. Open the matching Control Panel result.
  4. Select the named feature.
  5. Select OK.
  6. Restart if Windows requests it.
  7. Test the application.

If no feature is named, leave Windows Features unchanged. Enabling unrelated legacy components does not restore a CyberLink application DLL.

9. Remove stale startup entries after uninstalling PowerDVD

If the error appears when Windows starts but PowerDVD has already been removed, the problem may be a leftover startup reference.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for PowerDVD or CyberLink entries.
  4. Select the entry.
  5. Select Disable.
  6. Restart Windows.

Also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for remaining CyberLink components. Remove only entries you recognize and no longer need. If the startup message disappears, the DLL was not required by Windows; a leftover PowerDVD launch entry was calling an incomplete installation.

Avoid these unsafe fixes

Do not:

  • Download cldshowx.dll from a random DLL download site.
  • Copy a DLL from another PowerDVD version.
  • Put the file into System32 or SysWOW64.
  • Replace a 32-bit application file with an assumed 64-bit copy.
  • Run regsvr32 repeatedly without confirming that registration applies.
  • Disable antivirus protection to force an unknown file into place.
  • Install several unrelated runtime packages hoping one contains the file.
  • Delete the PowerDVD folder before preserving activation information.
  • Assume a current PowerDVD installer supports an old PowerDVD 5 license or installation.

An isolated download can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to another release, or leave the original damaged installation unresolved.

Which program installs cldshowx.dll?

Its strongest historical association is PowerDVD 5.0 from CyberLink Corp. Public metadata also associates similarly named files with later CyberLink Player and PowerDVD releases. Those files are not automatically interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I download the DLL?

No. Restore it through the matching PowerDVD installer, original disc, OEM recovery media, or a verified CyberLink source.

Why does the message say the specified module could not be found when the file is present?

The file may be damaged, incompatible, blocked, or unable to load a dependency. Check Event Viewer and reinstall the complete application rather than copying another DLL.

Should I run regsvr32 cldshowx.dll?

Usually no. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose registration entry points, and CLDShowX.dll is not established as one of those registration DLLs.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Only when the complete error explicitly identifies a missing dependency from one of those components. They do not normally supply cldshowx.dll.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did reinstalling a newer PowerDVD version not help?

PowerDVD 5 and newer releases can use different files, licensing systems, dependencies, and operating-system expectations. Use the matching edition and build whenever possible.

What if the error continues after reinstalling?

Confirm the exact executable, inspect Event Viewer, check antivirus quarantine, verify the installation path, and determine whether the legacy PowerDVD release is compatible with the current Windows version. If the application remains unsupported, use a supported media player or a newer CyberLink release that meets your license and Windows requirements.

Prevention

Keep the original PowerDVD installer, license information, and OEM recovery media together. Exclude the PowerDVD directory from cleanup tools that remove program files, but do not create antivirus exclusions for unverified files.

If a security product removes cldshowx.dll, review the detection before restoring anything. If PowerDVD is no longer needed, uninstall it cleanly and remove its stale startup entry rather than trying to keep an incomplete installation alive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For this particular error, the reliable repair path is straightforward: identify the PowerDVD installation, restore the complete matching program from trusted media, and keep application DLLs in their own program directory.
