It focuses on compatibility, accuracy, speed and modern features such as resolution upscaling, PGXP geometry correction, save states and per-game settings.
It is a standalone emulator, not a RetroArch core, and it is not affiliated with Sony. DuckStation does not include a PlayStation BIOS or commercial games: you must supply a BIOS dumped from your own console and legally dumped game images. The project’s rolling latest release was published on August 12, 2026, and identified by commit 5fd3668 when checked on August 18, 2026. Check the latest release here.

What is DuckStation?
DuckStation emulates the original Sony PlayStation, also known as the PS1, PSX or PSone. It provides a dedicated graphical interface for launching games, configuring controllers, managing memory cards and applying optional visual enhancements.
DuckStation is free to use. Its project repository lists a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license, so it should not be treated as software that can be freely modified, repackaged or commercially redistributed without regard to its license terms. Unofficial “preconfigured” packages are best avoided.

The emulator aims for broad compatibility, but no emulator guarantees perfect behavior in every game. Problems may be caused by a game image, BIOS region, copy protection, unsupported peripheral or enhancement setting rather than by the emulator itself.
Is DuckStation safe and legitimate?
Download it only from the official DuckStation site, the project’s GitHub Releases page or the official Google Play listing published by Stenzek. Avoid download portals, ROM sites and bundles containing BIOS files or games.
DuckStation does not provide copyrighted BIOS files or commercial games. Use a BIOS dumped from your own PlayStation and game images made from discs you legally own, subject to the laws where you live.

These are compatibility baselines, not a universal performance guarantee. Resolution, renderer, rewind, runahead and enhancement settings can substantially change the load on a particular device.
How to download and install DuckStation
Windows
- Download the appropriate installer from the official release page: x64, ARM64 or SSE2.
- Run the installer and launch DuckStation.
- Complete the Setup Wizard, then add your BIOS and game directories.
- Configure a controller under
Settings -> Controllers.
Direct official downloads include the x64 installer, ARM64 installer and SSE2 installer. A portable ZIP is also available. For portable mode, create an empty file named portable.txt beside the executable.
If Windows reports that vcruntime140_1.dll is missing, install Microsoft’s current supported Visual C++ Redistributable.
Linux
- Download the AppImage for your architecture, such as the x64 build or ARM64 build.
- Make it executable:
chmod a+x DuckStation-x64.AppImage- Launch it, allow a launcher shortcut if offered and complete the setup wizard.
- Add the BIOS and game folders.

macOS
- Download the official Universal ZIP.
- Extract it and open
DuckStation.app. Move it to Applications if desired. - Complete setup and configure your BIOS, game folders and controller.
If macOS blocks the application, verify that it came from the official GitHub release, then open System Settings -> Privacy & Security and select Open Anyway. This is a Gatekeeper signing warning, not by itself evidence that the official download is malicious.
Android
Install DuckStation from the official Google Play listing under developer Stenzek. External controllers must be mapped inside the app’s settings. Android is available, but the desktop project states that it does not provide support for the Android app; desktop and Android update cadence and feature parity should therefore not be assumed.
Google Play displayed a 4.7-star rating, more than one million downloads and a May 2, 2025 update date when checked on August 18, 2026. Store metadata changes over time.
First-time setup: BIOS, games and controller
BIOS requirements
A PlayStation BIOS image is required. DuckStation does not supply one, so dump it from your own PlayStation using an appropriate lawful method. BIOS files from different regions and hardware revisions may work, but matching the game and BIOS regions is the safest starting point. Some games also depend on authentic BIOS behavior or the original startup animation.
On desktop, use Tools -> Open Data Directory to find DuckStation’s active user folder. Typical locations are:

~/Library/Application Support/DuckStation
On Linux, the BIOS folder is normally ~/.local/share/duckstation/bios. Portable Windows installations can use a different data directory, so use the menu command rather than guessing.
Game images and disc dumping
DuckStation supports formats including CUE, ISO, IMG, ECM, MDS, CHD and unencrypted PBP. Desktop builds additionally list formats such as CCD and direct CD reading. Use images made from games you legally own.
For multi-track games, keep the .cue file beside every referenced track. A BIN file by itself may not describe the game’s audio and track layout. Do not rename BIN files without checking and updating the paths inside the cue sheet. CHD can save storage space, but a conversion is only useful if it preserves the audio and subchannel information the game needs. DuckStation also provides an official cue-maker tool for certain single-track BIN cases.

LibCrypt and SBI files
Some PAL games use LibCrypt protection and require CD subchannel data. Missing or incorrect data can cause hangs, crashes or broken gameplay. For an affected title, place the matching SBI file beside the image and use identical base names:

Spyro3.sbiA CHD containing the necessary subchannel information is another supported option. This is one of the most common reasons a particular PAL game appears to be an emulator failure when the underlying problem is an incomplete disc dump.
Recommended DuckStation graphics settings
There is no single best preset. Start conservatively, confirm that the game works, then add enhancements one at a time.

- Modern desktop: use a hardware renderer and begin with moderate internal-resolution upscaling. Vulkan is worth trying when its drivers are reliable; OpenGL or D3D11 are sensible alternatives if Vulkan glitches.
- Original-looking presentation: keep resolution and enhancement changes modest, and use per-game settings rather than global hacks.
- Android or low-end hardware: lower internal resolution and disable rewind or runahead if performance suffers.
- Graphical errors: try another renderer or software rendering for diagnosis.
Available features include D3D11, D3D12, OpenGL, Vulkan, Metal and software rendering, along with true color, texture filtering, adaptive downsampling, deinterlacing, post-processing shaders, widescreen rendering, texture replacement, PGXP geometry precision, depth-buffer emulation and emulated CPU overclocking.
PGXP, widescreen, texture replacement and overclocking can improve individual games but may introduce warped geometry, missing effects, timing problems or other incompatibilities. Treat them as per-game enhancements, not required settings.
Controller setup
On desktop, DuckStation supports DInput, XInput and SDL controller backends. Automatic mapping works for many controllers, but recognition by the operating system does not guarantee correct button assignments.
- Open
Settings -> Controllers. - Select the virtual PlayStation controller.
- Choose a button or axis field.
- Press the desired controller button or move the stick.
- Apply or save the configuration.
Default keyboard bindings include arrow keys for the D-pad, I/J/L/K for face buttons, Enter for Start, Backspace for Select, Q/E for L1/R1, 1/3 for L2/R2, 2/4 for L3/R3, W/A/S/D for the left stick and T/F/G/H for the right stick. Common hotkeys include F1 to load a state, F2 to save, F3/F4 to change slots, F10 for a screenshot, F11 for fullscreen, Tab to temporarily disable the speed limiter and Space to pause.

Saves, memory cards and multi-disc games
Memory-card saves are closest to original hardware and are generally more portable. Save states are convenient snapshots of the entire emulated machine, but may be less portable across emulator versions, games or settings.
DuckStation includes save-state previews, a memory-card editor, save importing, per-game memory-card switching and shared cards for multi-disc games. Back up memory-card files before upgrading or migrating, and do not rely exclusively on save states. For a full migration, back up the entire DuckStation user directory, which contains settings, BIOS files, cards and states.
Stable versus Preview builds
DuckStation offers Stable and Preview update channels. Stable is more tested and follows the latest GitHub release. Preview builds are produced more frequently and may include bugs. Change the channel at Settings -> Interface -> Updates. If a game becomes unreliable after an update, return to Stable, restore a backed-up configuration and test the game without enhancements.
Troubleshooting DuckStation
“BIOS is missing”
- Confirm that the BIOS is a valid dump and was not renamed with an extra extension.
- Put it in the active BIOS directory, not an old installation’s folder.
- Use
Tools -> Open Data Directoryto verify the location. - Check the BIOS region against the game.
- Remember that a portable build may use a separate data directory.
The game appears as tracks or will not boot
Keep the CUE sheet and all referenced BIN or other track files together. Inspect the paths inside the CUE file, undo accidental renames and test a complete dump in a supported format.
A PAL game hangs or crashes
Check for LibCrypt protection and the required SBI/subchannel data. The SBI file must be in the correct directory and have the same base name as the game image.
The game runs slowly
- Disable expensive enhancements.
- Reduce internal resolution.
- Disable rewind and runahead.
- Try another hardware renderer.
- Check that the speed limiter is not disabled or configured unusually.
- On Android, use a more conservative graphics profile.
There is no single CPU or GPU minimum that guarantees every title and enhancement combination.
Polygons or textures look wrong
Disable PGXP, widescreen and texture replacement, then test another renderer or software rendering. If the problem disappears, re-enable features individually and save the working settings per game.

Open Settings -> Controllers, confirm the virtual controller type, try automatic mapping and manually bind incorrect buttons or axes. For SDL controllers, check the controller database. Android users must map external controllers in the app.
DuckStation alternatives

ePSXe is a legacy alternative familiar to many users, but familiarity alone is not a reason to prefer it over a current DuckStation build. Verify its current support and official download sources before choosing it.

- Controller: look for XInput support on Windows, SDL or DInput compatibility on Linux, Bluetooth or USB support on Android, analog sticks and dependable remapping. Vendor pages include 8BitDo, GameSir, Xbox controllers and the DualSense.
