Where Winds Meet DX12 on PC: Which API to Use and Why It Matters

Start Where Winds Meet with DX12, then switch to DX11 only if it improves stability or frame pacing. Here’s how to choose, verify, and troubleshoot each API.

Start with DirectX 12. It is the API listed in Where Winds Meet’ official PC requirements and the more likely route to modern graphics features such as DLSS. Switch to DirectX 11 only if DX12 crashes, will not launch, causes severe hitching, or performs worse on your particular PC—and only where your launcher or game build supports that fallback.

There is no reliable evidence that DX12 always produces higher FPS than DX11. The better choice is the renderer that gives you stable frame delivery, acceptable performance, and the features you actually need.

What “DX12 required” means

The Steam listing specifies DirectX 12 for both the minimum and recommended PC configurations. That tells you the supported platform target; it does not automatically prove that every version of the game offers no DX11 fallback, that every launcher exposes the same options, or that DX12 will be faster on every system.

Three related things are easy to confuse:

  • Windows and driver support: your operating system and GPU can support DirectX 12.
  • The active renderer: the game can launch through a DX11 or DX12 rendering path.
  • Launcher availability: Steam, Epic, and the official launcher may expose different controls.

In other words, Windows reporting that DirectX 12 is installed does not prove that the current game session is rendering through DX12. Conversely, a DX12 requirement does not establish a universal performance advantage.

DX12 versus DX11: the practical trade-off

Factor DX12 DX11
Default choice Best starting point for modern hardware and current drivers. Use when it solves a specific stability or frame-pacing problem.
Features More likely to expose newer rendering and upscaling features. Player reports associate DLSS access with the DX12 launch path. May not expose options that are available under DX12.
Performance Can handle modern workloads efficiently on some systems, but no universal FPS benefit is established. Can perform better on a particular PC, especially when DX12 has engine or driver issues.
Stability May be more sensitive to drivers, shader compilation, overlays, and engine-specific problems. Can act as a compatibility fallback and has reportedly resolved some crashes.
Best test Judge frame times, stutter, crashes, and feature access—not just the API name. Keep it if it delivers smoother, more reliable play.

These are tendencies, not a benchmark of this game. API performance depends on the GPU, VRAM, CPU load, driver version, game build, resolution, graphics settings, shader state, and background software.

How to select DX12 on Steam

Some Steam players report seeing separate launch choices such as Where Winds Meet and Where Winds Meet (DirectX 12). Steam or the game can change the wording, so treat the labels below as a guide rather than a permanent interface specification.

  1. Open Steam and go to Library.
  2. Right-click Where Winds Meet and choose Properties.
  3. Remain on the General tab.
  4. Look for the launch-option or selected-launch-option control.
  5. Choose the DirectX 12 entry if it is offered.
  6. Close the window and launch the game from Steam.

A reported Steam selector is discussed in the community DX11/DX12 discussion. It is not a definitive, publisher-maintained procedure, and the selector may not appear for every account, build, or distribution.

How to try DX11

If Steam does not show a DX11 choice, players have reported trying this launch argument:

  • Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write

-dx11
  1. Open the game’s Steam Library entry.
  2. Right-click it and select Properties.
  3. Enter -dx11 in the launch-options field.
  4. Close Properties and launch the game.

This is a community-reported workaround, not an officially documented command guaranteed to work with every build or launcher. It may do nothing if the game starts through another executable, a separate launcher overrides the argument, the syntax has changed, or the current build does not support it. Remove the argument again if it has no effect or creates a new problem.

Some community posts also mention -dx12, but a launcher selector is preferable when available. The Steam technical-support page is the safer escalation route when the option is missing or the game will not launch.

Does the official launcher offer the same options?

Not necessarily. Where Winds Meet is distributed through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and a dedicated official PC launcher. The official installation guide confirms the dedicated launcher, while community reports suggest Steam users may see a renderer choice that official-launcher users do not.

Do not assume that Steam instructions transfer unchanged to Epic or the official launcher. If your launcher has no renderer selector, use only controls it actually provides; do not conclude from that absence alone that the launcher is permanently DX12-only.

How to tell which API is active

No single clue is perfect, particularly because game menus and launchers can change. Use several checks:

  1. Check the launch selection: note which entry or argument you used before starting the game.
  2. Check feature availability: options such as DLSS can be a useful clue. Community reports associate DLSS with DX12, but missing DLSS does not conclusively prove that DX11 is active. The GPU, driver, resolution, graphics mode, or game build may also explain it.
  3. Use a trustworthy overlay if necessary: a monitoring tool that identifies the active graphics API can provide additional evidence, but do not treat a generic “DirectX 12 installed” message as renderer confirmation.
  4. Compare one change at a time: record launch success, crashes, stutter, feature access, GPU/CPU load, VRAM use, and frame times after changing only the API.

A practical A/B test

  1. Launch with DX12 and use the same resolution, quality preset, frame cap, upscaling mode, and background applications you will use for DX11.
  2. Play the same demanding route or activity for roughly 15–30 minutes. Note startup behavior, hitching, crashes, frame-time consistency, and whether expected options appear.
  3. Repeat under DX11 if it is available.
  4. Keep the API with the better combination of stability, smooth frame delivery, and feature access.

This is a repeatable comparison, not a universal benchmark. A short test can miss a location-specific crash or shader-compilation hitch, so weigh longer-session reliability as well as the average frame rate.

What to do if DX12 crashes

Work through the following escalation ladder and change one category at a time:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update the GPU driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Restart Windows after installation.
  2. Disable overlays temporarily: Steam, Discord, NVIDIA App or GeForce, AMD Adrenalin, Xbox Game Bar, recording tools, and monitoring utilities.
  3. Return the GPU to stock settings: remove custom overclocks and undervolts while testing.
  4. Verify the game files through Steam, Epic, or the relevant launcher.
  5. Reset to conservative graphics settings and avoid adding frame generation or aggressive upscaling until the game is stable.
  6. Try DX11 through the launcher or the community-reported -dx11 argument if your distribution supports it.
  7. Contact official support if the crash persists. Include your GPU, driver version, Windows version, launcher, crash timing, and the API used.

Players have reported resolving particular startup or in-game crashes with DX11, but those reports are not proof of a universal fix. Do not delete system DirectX files; that can create additional Windows problems and is not a safe general remedy.

What to do if DX12 launches but stutters or performs poorly

  1. Disable frame generation temporarily, if the game offers it.
  2. Compare native resolution with upscaling rather than changing several quality settings at once.
  3. Lower shadows, volumetric effects, foliage, reflections, and view distance first.
  4. Set a frame-rate cap appropriate to your display.
  5. Monitor GPU utilization, VRAM use, CPU-thread load, and frame times. A low average FPS and a hitching problem are not necessarily the same issue.
  6. Allow initial shader compilation to finish where the game performs it.
  7. Install the game on an SSD. Steam lists 130 GB of available storage for minimum specifications and 200 GB for recommended specifications, and recommends an SSD for a better experience.
  8. Repeat the comparison with identical settings under DX11.

An SSD can help with loading and storage-related constraints, but it will not fix a driver crash, unstable overclock, unsupported GPU, or corrupted installation.

Which API fits your hardware and use case?

Situation Choice Why
Modern NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU with current drivers DX12 Strongest starting point and most likely modern-feature path.
DLSS or another expected feature is missing Confirm DX12 first Some players associate feature visibility with the DX12 path, though it is not conclusive.
DX12 crashes at startup DX11, if exposed It may provide a compatibility path.
DX12 causes severe hitching Test DX11 Frame-time consistency matters more than API branding.
Older GPU near minimum specifications Test both Results depend on drivers, CPU, VRAM, and the engine.
Official launcher has no selector Use available controls Steam’s options may not transfer to another distribution.
Competitive or latency-sensitive play Compare frame times Smooth delivery is more relevant than average FPS alone.
No meaningful difference Keep DX12 It is the officially listed, future-facing default unless instability appears.

How the published requirements affect the decision

Steam lists these PC requirements:

Minimum

  • Windows 10/11 64-bit
  • Intel Core i7-7700K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600
  • 16 GB RAM
  • GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB or Radeon RX 480 8 GB
  • DirectX 12
  • 130 GB available storage

Recommended

  • Windows 10/11 64-bit
  • Intel Core i7-10700 or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
  • 32 GB RAM
  • GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER, Radeon RX 6700 XT, or Intel Arc A750
  • DirectX 12
  • 200 GB available storage

These are storefront requirements, not a promise of a particular resolution, quality preset, or frame rate. Meeting the minimum GPU specification does not guarantee smooth high-resolution play. VRAM matters independently of the API, and laptop GPUs should be judged by their actual model and power limit rather than a desktop-equivalent name. Integrated or unsupported graphics should not be treated as a normal DX11-versus-DX12 comparison.

Because Where Winds Meet is free to play on PC storefronts, configuration testing is a more sensible first step than buying hardware. Consider an upgrade only after current drivers, storage, game files, overlays, API choice, VRAM limits, and CPU load have been checked.

Common edge cases

DLSS, FSR, or another upscaler is missing

Possible causes include launching through DX11, unsupported GPU hardware, an outdated driver, an incompatible resolution or graphics mode, a launcher that ignored the intended option, or a menu change in a newer build. Treat the missing setting as a clue, not proof of the active API.

The Steam renderer option is missing

  1. Clear custom launch arguments.
  2. Restart Steam.
  3. Launch from the Steam Library rather than a desktop shortcut.
  4. Check whether a secondary launcher opens.
  5. Use the relevant official support route if the control remains unavailable.

-dx11 does nothing

The argument may be unsupported by the current build, entered in the wrong field, overridden by another launcher, or aimed at the wrong executable. Remove it, restore default settings, and use the launcher’s own option if one exists.

The game crashes only in a particular area

Do not assume that a location-specific crash proves the API is at fault. Test the alternate renderer, but also check drivers, overlays, overclocks, file integrity, shader compilation, and graphics settings. Community reports of location-specific DX11 fixes are useful leads, not guarantees.

Bottom line

Use DX12 first on a supported Windows PC with current drivers. It matches the official PC requirements and is the more likely route to newer graphics features. If it crashes, stutters badly, or produces worse frame pacing on your hardware, test DX11 where available and keep whichever API delivers the most stable real-world session. Neither the DirectX version installed in Windows nor a single missing graphics option is enough to identify the active renderer or prove which API is universally faster.
