In Dune: Awakening, water, shelter, exploration, crafting, combat and building feed into one another; a modest, powered base and a safe approach to travel give you room to learn the rest. You can play solo, with friends or on official multiplayer servers, and the current official overview describes PvP as optional in multiplayer.
What should you prioritize in your first hours?
Think of the opening as learning a loop: survive the environment, gather what you need, improve your equipment and tools, then explore farther. Funcom’s official description highlights the hazards of Arrakis, including the need to find shade and extract liquid from enemies to refine into water. Treat water and shelter as preparations for any trip away from safety, rather than details to solve after you are already out exploring.

- Follow the game’s goals. The official Xbox overview says its goals are designed to guide players through the world and make the experience more accessible. Use them to learn the systems before chasing complex or unexplained objectives. Xbox’s official game overview
- Build for function first. Prioritize the infrastructure that supports progression: crafting machines, refineries, power and water machinery. Expand or decorate after the base can do useful work reliably.
- Make trips you can support. Plan around water and shade, and build your understanding of exploration and combat gradually. The official material does not establish a universal route, exact resource rates or a best recipe sequence, so avoid treating a particular itinerary as mandatory.
- Learn movement and progression as you go. The game offers five Schools of the Imperium, selectable skills and abilities, ground and flying vehicles, climbing, rappelling and soaring. These are options to explore, not evidence that one beginner build is best.
How do survival, crafting and the base fit together?
Survival is not separate from progression: the equipment and machinery you develop help make gathering and exploration more manageable. A base can support fabricators, refineries, power generators and water machinery, so think of it as an operational hub rather than only a place to store or display things. Keep the base powered
Power is part of base protection. Funcom says that when fuel runs out, the generator stops and the shield protecting structures from environmental damage goes down. Check the sub-fief for power or fuel status; the support article also says a notification near the base shows how many days of power remain. Choose location and permissions with care
Funcom identifies storms, unsafe locations, open desert, worm territory, player demolition or abandonment, and raiding in the PvP side of the Deep Desert as possible risks to a base. Its support guidance recommends avoiding open desert and worm-territory zones, enclosing the sub-fief console, keeping enough fuel, and limiting permissions to trusted players. If raiding is a concern, avoid the PvP side of the Deep Desert. These are risk-reduction measures, not guarantees that a base cannot be lost or damaged.
Which play mode should you choose?
Choose based on how much control, company and competitive exposure you want. The official Xbox overview describes single-player, private servers with friends and official multiplayer; it also says PvP is optional in multiplayer and that single-player and private servers offer customization of difficulty and gameplay parameters. None of these options is objectively best. If you are unsure, start with the mode whose social and PvP expectations you understand, then adjust your choice to the kind of play you enjoy.

Do not assume advice written for the 2025 launch still applies unchanged. Funcom’s update feed lists major updates through 2026, including Chapter 3 in February and Update 1.4 in May; the official announcement feed says Update 1.5 brought full single-player, customization and scalable difficulty.
