Choose a Deep Desert instance before you enter: PvE disables player combat for uninterrupted gathering, while PvP enables combat and gives spice harvesting and mining a 2.5× yield multiplier. The right choice depends on whether that extra yield is worth the risk of other players—not on an old north-versus-south map split.
How Deep Desert spice farming works now
Funcom’s Help Center describes the Deep Desert as an area reached through the Overland map, with separate PvE and PvP instances. You select your preferred instance before entering. The current rule is an instance choice, not a division into safe southern and contested northern areas described in older accounts. Funcom’s “Basics of PvP” page was updated 21 days before October 8, 2026.
In PvE, player combat is disabled, allowing exploration and resource gathering without attacks from other players. In PvP, combat is fully enabled, and spice harvesting and mining yield receive a 2.5× multiplier. Funcom says players who prefer to avoid PvP can still access core gameplay systems and resources through PvE activities.
Choose an instance based on risk and reward

The multiplier is a reward modifier, not a guarantee of a larger successful haul: player encounters can interrupt a run or put gathered resources at risk. Choose PvP only if you are comfortable with that possibility. If you want to learn the route, gather without player interference, or simply prefer a calmer session, PvE is the clear choice.

Plan a run: solo or with a group
A guide by Solomon Jackson at KeenGamer, published August 5, 2025, describes spice fields as eruptions of purple sand and smoke and outlines different approaches for solo and group play. Its equipment details and tactics are dated guidance, not current official instructions, so check that the relevant gear and mechanics still work in your build.
Solo runs
The guide describes using a compactor to collect Spice Sand and an ornithopter for solo runs. Its proposed loop is to scout for a field, collect in short bursts, watch for worm pressure, and return the material to a refinery. Leaving open sand when danger rises is presented as a way to reduce exposure. Treat this as an approach to test in-game, not a guaranteed safe method.

Group runs
For groups, the guide describes transporting and operating a Sand Crawler, with spotters watching for worm and player threats. This can support coordinated gathering, but it adds logistics and depends on the equipment and tactics remaining viable after subsequent patches. A group does not remove the combat risk of entering PvP.
For either approach, decide on the instance first. A solo player who values uninterrupted collection may favor PvE; a coordinated group or solo player seeking the PvP multiplier may choose PvP if they accept the possibility of player combat. The 2025 guide does not establish a current, definitive ranking of solo and group efficiency.

Field sizes and reported yields
The KeenGamer guide reports approximate Spice Sand yields of about 500 from small fields, 5,000–10,000+ from medium fields, and 15,000–20,000+ from large fields. These are figures from an August 5, 2025 third-party guide, not current yields verified by Funcom. Actual results may differ in the live game; do not use them as guaranteed amounts or assume the 2.5× PvP modifier translates into a specific final total.

- Instance rules: Use the current PvE/PvP choice before entry; do not assume older north/south boundaries still apply.
