Dune: Awakening groups its weapons into three broad categories: melee, ranged, and heavy. What separates them in play is how each class spends its resource and how it interacts with Holtzman Shields, the defensive technology that shapes most combat in the game. This guide explains those families and mechanics using community-maintained weapon references and Funcom’s official patch notes. Because these sources compare weapon classes rather than rank individual guns, no single weapon is named as the best.
What are the weapons in Dune: Awakening?
Fandom’s broad weapons overview sorts the arsenal into melee, ranged, and heavy. Community references go further and list individual weapon types inside those groups. The labels are not always identical from one reference to the next, so the breakdown below notes where they differ.

Melee
The broad overview divides melee into short and long blades. The more detailed community overview lists kindjals, dual blades, rapiers, and swords. Melee weapons consume stamina rather than ammunition. The detailed overview distinguishes melee types by their attack combinations, speed, reach, and the amount of pressure they put on a shield.
Ranged
The broad overview lists sidearms, rifles, and scatterguns under ranged. The detailed overview adds drillguns, disruptors, light machine guns, flamethrowers, lasguns, and missile launchers. Most ranged weapons fire light or heavy darts, although the references do not tie each dart type to a specific weapon in every case.

Heavy
The broad overview lists heavy weapons as a separate category and names machineguns, flamethrowers, and lasguns within it. The detailed overview places light machine guns, flamethrowers, and lasguns under ranged instead. Readers should treat heavy and ranged as overlapping labels rather than strictly separate groups.
How Holtzman Shields change the fight
Shield interaction is the mechanic that most clearly separates one weapon from another. The four cases below are the ones the community references describe.
Rank #2
- For play with Dune: Imperium or Dune: Imperium - Uprising
- 86 new cards
- 9 new Leaders
Ordinary darts
Standard light and heavy darts are ineffective against Holtzman Shields. A weapon that relies on ordinary darts therefore needs a different answer when it meets a shielded target.
Disruptors
Disruptor weapons temporarily deactivate shields. Their role is to open a target to damage rather than to deal damage through the shield directly.
Drillshot weapons
Drillshot weapons are designed to tunnel through shields. The detailed overview lists drillguns in the ranged group, which appears to be the same class, though the reference does not state this in so many words.
Lasguns
Lasguns use power and deal heavy damage, but they cannot fire on an active Holtzman Shield. According to the community overview, contact between a lasgun and a shield would cause a thermonuclear reaction, which is the in-universe reason for the restriction. A separate community lasgun page reports that CHOAM-imported lasguns carry a shield-detection override that disables firing when the weapon is aimed at a shield. Both descriptions apply to the fictional setting only.
Rank #4
- Step into the world of Dune and explore an immersive, open world Arrakis, from sandworm-infested deserts to the sprawling city of Arrakeen
- Experience a unique, cinematic Dune story that gives clear meaning and purpose to your otherwise freeform survival crafting journey
- From the slow blade to epic firepower, train and progress as a Swordmaster, Bene Gesserit, Trooper, and Mentat to unlock their signature weapons and abilities
- Rise from survival to greatness as you grow your own piece of Arrakis from a modest crafting base into a sprawling fortress, or secure your fortune by chasing spice blows and running your own spice-refining operation
- Play single-player and customize every aspect of your experience, or go online to team up with friends on private or public multiplayer servers
Ammunition and power
Each family draws on a different resource, which affects how often a weapon can be used between reloads or recharges.
- Melee: consumes stamina.
- Most ranged weapons: fire light or heavy darts.
- Lasguns: run on power.
- Missile launchers: consume rockets. Launcher modules for buggies and ornithopters are also described in the detailed overview.
Comparing weapon classes
The table compares the main classes on the four axes the references support: resource, shield interaction, and the combat role each source names. Cells marked “Not stated” are not covered by the references and are not inferred here.

Chapter 3 weapon additions
Funcom’s Chapter 3 patch notes announce three weapon changes:
- Pyrocket: a ranged weapon described as a unique flamethrower that fires incendiary-gel projectiles.
- Dual Blades: a melee weapon. The announcement states that Dual Blades are available in Duraluminum and Plastanium tiers.
- Rapier redesign: the update centers the rapier on timing, spacing, and reactive play.
The release date, version number, and final specifics of these changes can shift between builds. Check Funcom’s official Chapter 3 patch notes before relying on the tier names or the Pyrocket description for a specific game version.
