This guide covers the deduction loop described on the official Dupery Steam page, including its four role categories, detective board, procedurally generated cases and reputation system. The separate promotional ARG on the game’s official help page is not part of the core case-solving method.

What you are actually solving in Dupery
Dupery is a single-player, noir deduction roguelite built around procedurally generated grid cases. Each case contains good- and evil-aligned roles. You investigate characters, collect accounts, compare those accounts against one another and the case layout, then arrest the characters you conclude are evil. The official description calls the information imperfect, so a statement that sounds useful is not automatically reliable.

The categories are not a substitute for deduction. They explain why two accounts can conflict and why the identity of the speaker must stay attached to every clue.
Use the detective board as an evidence ledger
The official product description specifically calls for compiling imperfect information with “strings, pins and pen” on the in-game detective board. It does not publish a formal symbol key, so the following is a practical notation method rather than a developer-mandated system.
1. Pin the source before interpreting the clue
For every statement, first mark who said it. Then connect that speaker to the suspect, place or event mentioned. If a character says that someone was at a particular location, keep three separate facts visible: the speaker, the person being described and the location. This prevents a useful observation from becoming detached from the potentially unreliable person who supplied it.
2. Write the literal statement
Use the pen to record the narrowest version of what was actually said. For example, write “Mara says Ivo entered the north room” rather than “Ivo is trustworthy” or “Ivo was definitely in the north room.” The first wording preserves the observation and its source; the latter two are interpretations that may not follow.
3. Add your inference on a separate line
Under the literal statement, write what you think it could mean: perhaps the account places Ivo in the room, perhaps Mara is trying to redirect suspicion, or perhaps the timing leaves several possibilities. Keeping observation and inference apart makes it easier to erase a bad theory without losing the underlying clue.
4. Mark the status of each connection
Use a consistent visual distinction for supported, contradicted and unresolved links. A solid string can represent a relationship you currently accept; a pin or short note can mark a lead that still needs confirmation. Because the game does not define these symbols, choose a scheme you can read quickly and apply it consistently throughout a case.
5. Preserve uncertainty instead of forcing a binary answer
Write “unknown,” “one of two suspects” or “timing unclear” when that is what the evidence supports. A visible uncertain state is more useful than a premature innocent-or-evil label, especially when a later account can overturn your first interpretation.

Cross-reference every important account
Dupery’s core loop asks you to cross-reference what you hear. In practice, that means testing a statement against independent information rather than counting the number of clues that merely sound persuasive.
Look for corroboration
When two accounts describe the same person, location or event, compare their exact claims. Agreement is useful when the speakers provide genuinely separate support. If two characters repeat the same conclusion but both may have learned it from the same source, treat that as less independent than two observations that establish different parts of the timeline.
Investigate contradictions without declaring a winner immediately
A contradiction is a lead, not automatic proof that the less believable speaker is evil. First check whether the accounts refer to different times, locations or meanings. If the conflict remains, record both statements and identify what additional fact would resolve it. This keeps a suspicious character in the investigation queue rather than turning one anomaly into an unsupported arrest.
Compare claims with the case structure
Use the grid and the information available in the case to test whether a statement can fit at all. A claim that conflicts with a known location or sequence deserves scrutiny, but distinguish “the account does not fit the evidence” from “the speaker must be a Traitor.” The role categories include deception, yet the listing does not say that every inconsistency has only one possible cause.
Maintain a contradiction list
- Write the two conflicting statements in their literal form.
- Record which suspect, location or event each statement concerns.
- Note whether the conflict is factual, temporal or simply interpretive.
- List the smallest missing fact that would settle it.
- Revisit the entry whenever a new clue arrives.
This list stops a dramatic accusation from crowding out quieter evidence that may be more decisive.
Do not treat all characters as truthful
The most damaging assumption is that every interview is a reliable report. The official listing explicitly says Underlings lie, Traitors are more deceptive and apparently well-meaning characters may still be compromised. That means a friendly tone, a helpful-looking clue or a plausible explanation cannot serve as proof by itself.
Use reliability as a question, not a verdict
Instead of asking “Is this character telling the truth?” ask “What parts of this account can be checked?” A deceptive role may still reveal a true location while lying about motive, or provide a technically accurate detail that points you toward the wrong suspect. Keep the claim granular so one verified detail does not validate the entire interview.

Apply a source-aware reading order
- Capture the statement and speaker without judging either one.
- Check whether the statement fits facts you already regard as well supported.
- Search for a second account that addresses the same point from another angle.
- Update the speaker’s reliability estimate only after the comparison.
- Use the revised assessment to decide which unresolved claims deserve your next investigation.
This order protects you from confirmation bias: deciding that a character is good first and then accepting every later statement as evidence for that decision.
Separate a plausible story from a proven deduction
Deduction cases often produce a tidy explanation before they produce sufficient evidence. A theory can account for the clues you have seen and still fail when a new account appears. Dupery combines imperfect information with procedurally generated cases, so your notes need to survive revision.
Use a confidence ladder
- Observed: the literal content of a statement or an established case fact.
- Supported: an interpretation backed by at least one independent corroborating clue.
- Contested: an interpretation that conflicts with another account.
- Speculative: a possible explanation with no confirming evidence yet.
Only the first two levels should normally support a high-cost decision. Keep contested and speculative theories visible, but do not let them masquerade as established facts.
Re-evaluate when new information arrives
When a new clue conflicts with your current theory, change the theory rather than quietly bending the clue to fit it. On the board, remove or relabel links that depended on the old assumption, then check which other conclusions relied on the same link. This prevents one early mistake from spreading through the entire case.
Make arrests only after checking the reputation cost
Arrests are not free. Arresting a good-aligned role reduces reputation, and allowing reputation to fall too low can get the detective fired. Solving a case requires arresting all evil roles and increases reputation. The practical consequence is that suspicion alone is not a safe arrest standard.

Use a pre-arrest checklist
- Identity: Have you recorded the suspect’s relevant statements and role-related evidence?
- Specific contradiction: Can you state exactly which account or case fact does not fit?
- Independent support: Is the conclusion backed by more than one clue, or is it resting on a single speaker?
- Alternative: Could another character or timing explanation account for the same inconsistency?
- Reputation: Is the evidence strong enough to justify the cost of being wrong?
- Completeness: Have you checked whether every remaining evil role is accounted for, rather than stopping after one successful arrest?
If you cannot answer the contradiction and alternative questions, keep the suspect marked as unresolved and investigate further. This is a risk-management habit inferred from the stated reputation system, not a hidden rule about a required number of clues.
Do not confuse “not yet cleared” with “must arrest”
In an imperfect-information case, several characters can remain possible suspects at once. Your board should show that uncertainty. A character who has not been corroborated is a reason to gather more evidence, not automatic permission to spend reputation on an arrest.

Common deduction mistakes and their fixes
Assuming every character is truthful
Why it fails: Underlings lie, Traitors are more deceptive and good-looking or well-meaning characters can be compromised.
Fix: Keep the speaker attached to each clue and test the claim against independent accounts before using it as a foundation.

Arresting the most suspicious character first
Why it fails: Suspicion is an interpretation, while an incorrect arrest has an explicit reputation penalty.
Fix: Identify the precise contradiction, record corroboration and consider at least one alternative explanation before committing.
Forgetting who said what
Why it fails: Once a statement is detached from its source, you lose the context needed to judge it in light of role-dependent deception.
Fix: Begin every board entry with the speaker’s name, then connect the claim to its subject and location.

Fix: Label interpretations as supported, contested or speculative and promote them only when new evidence warrants it.
Failing to update an old theory
Why it fails: Procedurally generated cases and imperfect information mean that later evidence can invalidate an earlier reading.
Fix: Reopen every conclusion that depended on a contradicted clue and redraw the affected links.
Stopping after one successful arrest
Why it fails: The case requires arresting all evil roles, not merely identifying one.
Fix: After each arrest, review the remaining suspects and unresolved contradictions instead of treating the first correct decision as the end of the investigation.
Adapt your method to procedural cases and campaign systems
The full-game listing describes three campaign regions with different region mechanics and roles, role selection between missions, quirks and modifiers, a reputation meter and a final boss confrontation for each campaign. The listing does not provide enough detail to prescribe a separate deduction formula for each region, so carry the same evidence discipline into every run while checking which new mechanics alter the information available to you.
Before a mission
- Read the region and role information presented for that mission.
- Note any quirk or modifier that could change how you interpret the available clues.
- Decide on a notation scheme before interviews begin so you do not change meanings halfway through a case.
During a mission
- Keep source, literal claim and inference in separate board entries.
- Mark unresolved links instead of forcing a conclusion.
- Recheck your contradiction list after each new investigation.
- Protect reputation by reserving arrests for conclusions with corroboration.
Between missions
Use the role-selection and modifier information to anticipate that a later case may demand a different balance of caution and speed. Do not assume that a deduction pattern from one procedurally generated case will transfer unchanged to the next.

What the demo and full-game listings establish
Availability and feature counts can change, and the two Steam pages describe different versions. Treat their figures as page-specific claims rather than combining them into one definitive role count.

As of the pages checked October 13, 2026, the full-game release date remains listed as to be announced. The detective-board tools described above are part of the game itself; the promotional ARG mentioned on the help page is a separate activity and should not be used as evidence for a normal case.
A repeatable case routine
- Survey the case: identify the available characters, locations and any region, quirk or modifier information shown for the mission.
- Interview and record: pin each statement to its speaker before writing an interpretation.
- Build the board: connect speakers to suspects, locations and events with clearly marked confidence levels.
- Cross-reference: compare overlapping accounts and maintain a list of unresolved contradictions.
- Update: revise links when later information conflicts with an earlier theory.
- Audit before arrest: check the exact contradiction, corroboration, alternative explanation and reputation risk.
- Finish the case: after each arrest, continue checking for remaining evil roles and unresolved evidence until the case requirements are met.
The habit that matters most is source discipline: every clue should remain traceable to the character who supplied it. That single practice makes deception visible, keeps theories revisable and gives you a rational basis for deciding when an arrest is worth the reputation at stake.
