To run a PC-98 game on Windows, use an emulator that explicitly supports NEC PC-98 hardware—not a standard IBM PC DOS setup. Two documented starting points are DOSBox-X in PC-98 mode, which can mount a game image or host folder, and the Neko Project II Kai core in a Libretro frontend, which supports a range of PC-98 disk formats but requires firmware and font files in a specific system directory. Neither option is documented as compatible with every game, so begin by checking the image format and the game’s compatibility notes.

Why a PC-98 game needs a PC-98 emulator

PC-98 computers and IBM-compatible PCs both used x86 processors and could run DOS or Windows, but that does not make their software interchangeable. The PC-98 platform has its own hardware conventions and disk images. An emulator configured as an ordinary IBM-compatible DOS machine may therefore fail to boot or run a PC-98 game, even if the game appears to be DOS software.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

DOSBox-X’s PC-98 documentation makes the distinction explicit: by default, DOSBox-X starts the standard IBM-compatible DOS system, not the PC-98 system. You must select its PC-98 machine mode. Neko Project II Kai is a dedicated PC-9801-series core, but it has its own firmware setup requirements. In either case, you need a game image or directory containing the game files; an emulator does not supply the game itself.

The PC-98 family was sold in Japan from 1982 to 2000, according to the DOSBox-X guide. That long platform history means there is no single image type or setup that can be assumed to work for every title.

What to have ready before installing

Start by identifying exactly what you have. A game may be a bootable hard-disk image, one or more floppy images, or a directory of files. Record the filename extension without changing it: PC-98 examples include HDI and FDD, while Neko Project II Kai lists D98, FDI, FDD, D88, HDI, HDD, and CMD among its documented content extensions. An extension match only tells you that the format is listed; it does not prove that a particular release or dump will work.

You should also know whether the title expects one disk or several and whether its notes call for a particular emulator. Some collections report that certain floppy games need disk 1 in drive slot A and disk 2 in slot B. Keep multi-disk files together and be prepared to swap media from the emulator’s controls instead of assuming that opening the first image is enough.

Keep the emulator, game image, firmware, and font files in clearly named folders. DOSBox-X can start PC-98 mode with the executable alone, while Neko Project II Kai through Libretro requires a specific firmware set. The documents do not identify a paid accessory or special PC purchase as necessary; the setup is centered on emulator software, disk images, and (for the Libretro core) system files. Use only game images and firmware you are entitled to use, because the cited emulator pages do not establish distribution rights for files obtained elsewhere.

Choose a starting emulator

Choose based on the game image you have and the setup you are willing to do. The documentation establishes workflows and supported formats, not a universal best emulator or a complete compatibility ranking.

Option What its documentation establishes Setup consideration
DOSBox-X, PC-98 mode A PC-98 machine mode selected with machine=pc98; host folders and disk images can be mounted. The PC-98 mode can start with the DOSBox-X executable alone. Correct Japanese character display may require font configuration.
Neko Project II Kai through Libretro A dedicated PC-9801-series core with documented extensions including .d98, .fdi, .fdd, .d88, .hdi, .hdd, and .cmd. Requires specified BIOS, ITF, sound, and font files under a folder named np2kai in the frontend’s system directory.

Check the extension of your disk image against the relevant emulator’s documentation, then check for title-specific compatibility notes. An extension match shows that the format is listed; it does not guarantee that a particular game will run correctly.

How the trade-off works

DOSBox-X is the more direct first experiment when you want to set one machine option and mount a folder or image from a command prompt or the Drive menu. Its guide documents both a persistent configuration setting and a one-time command-line setting. Neko Project II Kai is attractive when your frontend already uses Libretro cores or when your image is in one of the many extensions listed on its page, but the firmware and folder naming must be exact.

Neither page supplies a complete title-by-title ranking. A game that fails in one option may still work in another, and a community FAQ describes a collection that required T98-Next, Anex86, and Virtual98 for all of the games its author had encountered. Treat that as a report about that collection, not as a universal requirement or a statistic for the entire PC-98 library.

Run a game with DOSBox-X

DOSBox-X normally starts in IBM-compatible DOS mode, so select the PC-98 machine before mounting or booting the game. The project guide lists pc9801 and pc9821 as aliases for pc98 on the page consulted; using pc98 follows its primary setting name.

1. Select PC-98 mode

There are two documented ways to set the machine type:

  • In dosbox-x.conf, set machine=pc98.
  • Alternatively, start the emulator with dosbox-x -set machine=pc98.

Use the executable name and command prompt location appropriate to your DOSBox-X installation. The command shown is the project guide’s form; if Windows cannot find dosbox-x, launch it from its installation folder or use the full path to the executable.

The configuration-file method is useful when you routinely play PC-98 software, because it makes the machine choice part of that profile. The command-line method is useful for a one-off test or a separate shortcut. In both cases, verify the machine setting before judging the image: launching in the default IBM-compatible mode can create a misleading boot failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Mount the game files

DOSBox-X supports mounting a host directory with MOUNT and a disk image with IMGMOUNT. Its guide also describes mounting through the Drive menu. Use the method that matches what you have:

  • For a host folder at C:PC98, enter MOUNT C C:PC98.
  • For an HDI disk image at D:PC98.HDI, enter IMGMOUNT C D:PC98.HDI.

These are example paths: replace them with the actual Windows location and filename. The DOSBox-X guide notes that PC-98 images commonly use formats such as HDI or FDD rather than the IMG format familiar from standard DOS setups. Do not rename an image to .IMG just to make it look like a conventional DOS disk; use the format the game image actually has and consult the emulator’s instructions for mounting it.

After the mount succeeds, DOSBox-X assigns the image or folder to an emulated drive letter. If the game is a directory rather than a bootable image, mounting exposes its files without changing the original files on the Windows side. If the image is bootable, you can either access it as a mounted drive or use the boot command described below.

3. Start the game or boot the image

After mounting, switch to the emulated drive and run the game’s executable or startup command. For example, the DOSBox-X guide’s Touhou example mounts an HDI as C:, changes to C:, and runs GAME. It also gives BOOT C: as an alternative when booting from a bootable image. Those commands are examples, not universal startup commands: use the game’s own instructions if it expects a different file or boot sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The guide identifies the first five Touhou games as PC-98-targeted. That is a useful example of a PC-98 game set, not a reason to assume every Touhou title runs on PC-98. Confirm the platform for the specific release you own before troubleshooting an image.

4. Check character rendering separately

Getting the emulator to start does not ensure that Japanese text and characters will display correctly. The DOSBox-X guide recommends a PC-98 font and identifies the original FONT.ROM and the free alternative FREECG98.BMP, which is included with DOSBox-X. It also notes that in some configurations from version 0.83.15 onward a font is optional because an internal Japanese DOS/V font may be used.

That version note applies to the guide’s described configurations; it does not establish that every setup renders every character correctly without a font. If the game runs but text looks wrong or is missing, check the font configuration and the game’s requirements rather than treating a successful boot as proof that the display is configured correctly.

Set up Neko Project II Kai through Libretro

Libretro documents Neko Project II Kai as a core for the PC-9801 series. Its documentation lists a broader set of disk and content extensions than the examples above, including .d98, .fdi, .fdd, .d88, .hdi, .hdd, and .cmd. Confirm your image type against the core’s current documentation before building the setup around it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Place the required system files

For this core, Libretro specifies a folder named np2kai inside the frontend’s system directory. It lists these files as required:

  • font.bmp
  • FONT.ROM
  • bios.rom
  • itf.rom
  • sound.rom

The page also lists bios9821.rom, d8000.rom, and several YM2608 rhythm samples as optional. Follow the core’s documented folder and filenames; these requirements are for Neko Project II Kai through Libretro, not universal requirements for all PC-98 emulators.

Filename and directory accuracy matter. A file with the right contents but the wrong name, capitalization, or location may not be detected by the core. Keep the required files directly under the np2kai system folder rather than scattering them among frontend folders, and consult the current Libretro page if the frontend reports missing firmware.

The documentation names the files but does not establish the distribution rights or availability of any particular firmware file. Use files you are entitled to use and do not assume that downloading a game image or firmware from an arbitrary source is authorized.

2. Load the game image and manage media

Load a content image whose extension is among those documented by the core. The Libretro page says the NP2 menu can swap floppy or hard-disk media. It also lists disk control and save states as supported features. These features can help when a game asks for another disk or when you want to save progress through the frontend, but game behavior still depends on the title and its image.

For keyboard controls documented by the core, F12 opens the NP2 menu, F11 toggles mouse-capture visibility, and holding End while booting opens machine options. If you need to change disks or adjust machine options, use these documented controls; avoid assuming the frontend’s menus use the same labels or paths as another Libretro setup.

Because the core supports both floppy and hard-disk content, first determine which kind of image the game uses. A hard-disk image may contain the complete installation, while a floppy-based title may present a disk-change prompt during play. Use the NP2 media controls to assign the requested image to the requested drive, and keep the original image files unchanged so you can retry a different arrangement.

Handle multi-disk games and compatibility limits

PC-98 compatibility is title-specific. The available documentation does not establish a complete game-by-game compatibility table or a current Windows 10/11 compatibility matrix for every emulator build. A format being supported and a machine mode being available are useful prerequisites, not guarantees of perfect operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A PC98.org FAQ reports that its author had encountered games requiring at least three emulators—T98-Next, Anex86, and Virtual98—and notes that this might be changing as MAME incorporates PC-98 emulation. This is a collection-specific account, not an independently audited count or a universal requirement. The same FAQ says some floppy games require disk 1 in slot A and disk 2 in slot B. If a game requests another disk or stops at a disk prompt, check its notes and the emulator’s media controls; do not assume that mounting one disk image is sufficient.

Multi-disk behavior can fail in several ways: the image may be mounted in the wrong slot, the emulator may still be focused on the first disk, or the title may require a particular boot disk before the second disk is inserted. The documented remedy is to use the emulator’s disk controls and title-specific instructions, not to merge or rename images. If a collection identifies a preferred emulator, follow that guidance before concluding that the image is bad.

A practical check when a game does not start

  • Confirm the machine type. In DOSBox-X, check that PC-98 mode is selected rather than the default IBM-compatible DOS system.
  • Check the image format. Compare the actual extension and format with the emulator’s documented support. A renamed file does not convert its disk format.
  • Check the game’s launch method. Some images can be booted; others may need to be mounted and started by running a command from the emulated drive.
  • Check for additional disks. A game may require multiple floppy images or particular drive slots. Use the emulator’s media controls and title-specific notes.
  • Separate boot problems from display problems. If the game launches but Japanese characters render incorrectly, inspect the font setup. DOSBox-X’s PC-98 font behavior is a separate issue from selecting the machine mode.
  • Check the core’s firmware setup. For Neko Project II Kai, verify the required filenames and np2kai directory under the frontend’s system directory.
  • Check optional files only after required files. Neko Project II Kai documents optional BIOS, D8000, and YM2608 sample files; do not mistake optional entries for the minimum required set.
  • Consult the emulator build and game notes. Compatibility can vary by title and build, and the cited documentation does not settle every Windows version or game combination.

Version and Windows compatibility caveats

The original Neko Project II website lists a Windows x64 version 0.86 released on 2016-03-06. That date and version describe the original project page; they do not establish the status of later forks such as Neko Project II Kai. Treat the core’s own current documentation and release information as the relevant reference for the version you plan to use.

The available project documentation does not provide a complete current Windows 10 or Windows 11 compatibility matrix for every emulator build or PC-98 title. Before installing, check the emulator’s release page and the game’s specific compatibility notes. No one documented setup here can be promised to work with every title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows compatibility also includes the frontend layer. DOSBox-X is configured directly, while Neko Project II Kai runs through a Libretro frontend whose system-directory location and menu layout can vary. If the core appears installed but reports missing files, verify the frontend’s actual system path and the exact np2kai subfolder instead of copying DOSBox-X settings into the Libretro setup.

Which setup should you try first?

  • Start with DOSBox-X if you want a documented PC-98 machine setting and a straightforward command-line or configuration-file path for mounting a host folder or image. Its guide says PC-98 mode can start without additional files.
  • Try Neko Project II Kai through Libretro if the image format is listed by the core and you can provide its required system files. The documentation describes media swapping, disk control, and save states.
  • Switch approaches when the evidence points elsewhere. If the game’s notes identify a different emulator or a multi-disk arrangement, follow those title-specific instructions rather than treating either starting option as universal.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run a PC-98 game in a normal DOSBox configuration?

Not reliably. DOSBox-X starts in standard IBM-compatible DOS mode by default, so select machine=pc98 or use dosbox-x -set machine=pc98. A PC-98 title needs an emulator mode or core that explicitly supports the platform.

Which PC-98 image formats are supported?

DOSBox-X’s guide discusses HDI and FDD images. Libretro’s Neko Project II Kai page lists .d98, .fdi, .fdd, .d88, .hdi, .hdd, and .cmd. Check the current emulator page and the individual game’s notes; a listed extension is not a compatibility guarantee.

Do I need a BIOS file for DOSBox-X PC-98 mode?

The DOSBox-X guide says PC-98 mode can start with the executable alone. Japanese character display may still need a font, such as the original FONT.ROM or the included free FREECG98.BMP alternative, depending on configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What firmware does Neko Project II Kai require?

Libretro documents font.bmp, FONT.ROM, bios.rom, itf.rom, and sound.rom as required under an np2kai folder in the frontend’s system directory. It lists bios9821.rom, d8000.rom, and YM2608 rhythm samples as optional.

How do I change disks in a multi-disk game?

Use the emulator’s media controls. The Neko Project II Kai documentation says its NP2 menu can swap floppy and hard-disk media. A PC98.org FAQ reports that some floppy titles require disk 1 in slot A and disk 2 in slot B, so follow the title’s instructions rather than mounting only one image.

Are all Touhou games PC-98 games?

No. The DOSBox-X guide identifies the first five Touhou games as PC-98-targeted. Use that as a concrete example and verify the platform of any later title separately.

Will these emulators work on Windows 10 or Windows 11?

The cited pages do not provide a complete current Windows 10/11 compatibility matrix for every build and title. Check the emulator’s current release information and the specific game’s compatibility notes, and expect results to vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the game boot but show broken Japanese text?

Machine selection and character rendering are separate issues. In DOSBox-X, review the PC-98 font configuration and the documented FONT.ROM or FREECG98.BMP options. In Neko Project II Kai, verify the required font files are in the np2kai system folder.

Do I need several emulators?

There is no universal number. A PC98.org FAQ says its author needed T98-Next, Anex86, and Virtual98 for all games encountered in that collection, while noting that MAME’s PC-98 work might change the situation. Treat that as a collection-specific report and use title-specific compatibility guidance.

The Bottom Line

Use a PC-98-capable emulator, not an ordinary IBM-compatible DOS profile. DOSBox-X offers the shortest documented path: set machine=pc98, mount the HDI, FDD, or host folder, and run or boot the game. Neko Project II Kai through Libretro supports many documented image extensions and media controls, but requires the exact np2kai firmware and font layout. Verify the image format, disk arrangement, fonts, and title-specific compatibility notes, because no single documented setup covers every PC-98 game.
