Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou may see “dvcrenderingadapter.dll was not found,” “The file dvcrenderingadapter.dll is missing,” or “DVCRenderingAdapter.dll failed to register.” The file belongs to a Citrix installation, so dvcrenderingadapter.dll errors are usually Citrix Receiver or Citrix Workspace repair problems, not missing Windows files.
The 60-second answer
Do not download this DLL separately or copy it into System32. The safest repair is:
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Install the appropriate Universal C Runtime update.
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall Citrix Workspace app from the official Citrix installer.
- For current desktop Workspace installations, run the Citrix-supported cleanup installation command:
CitrixWorkspaceApp.exe /CleanInstall
If the error appeared during an older Citrix Receiver installation, the missing Universal C Runtime is the best-supported cause. Citrix documented this problem with the message “DVCRenderingAdapter.dll failed to register” and recommended Microsoft update KB2999226. Do not assume that exact package applies unchanged to every Windows release; use Windows Update and Microsoft’s applicable Universal C Runtime guidance.
What is dvcrenderingadapter.dll?
DVCRenderingAdapter.dll is a legitimate Citrix component described as DVC Rendering Adapter. It is associated with legacy Citrix Receiver and Citrix ICA Client installations, while the current product is branded Citrix Workspace app.

It is not a Windows component. A typical older installation places it in a Citrix ICA Client directory such as:
C:Program Files (x86)CitrixICA ClientDVCRenderingAdapter.dll
Current Citrix installations may instead use:
C:Program FilesCitrixICA Client
C:Program Files (x86)CitrixICA Client
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalCitrixICA Client
The exact location depends on the Citrix product, architecture, and whether it was installed per machine or per user. Public metadata identifies the component as 32-bit, but do not use a third-party version listing as a complete Citrix compatibility guide. The Citrix package that installed the file is the correct source for its matching copy.
Which error are you seeing?
The wording points toward different checks.
“DVCRenderingAdapter.dll failed to register”
This is most strongly associated with a Citrix Receiver MSI installation failure. A historical version of the message reads:
Error 1904. Module C:Program FilesCitrixICA ClientDVCRenderingAdapter.dll failed to register.
HRESULT -2147319780. Contact your support personnel.
Another historical Citrix installation variant reported HRESULT -2147024770. These codes identify installer or registration failures, not proof that the DLL itself is corrupt.
The likely causes are a missing Universal C Runtime, an incomplete Receiver installation, damaged permissions, stale MSI data, or a missing dependent runtime.
“dvcrenderingadapter.dll was not found”
This usually means that an application or Citrix-related process tried to load the component and could not find it in the expected installation directory. The file may have been removed during an incomplete uninstall, quarantined by security software, or separated from the rest of the Citrix installation.
“The specified module could not be found”
Windows may display this even when DVCRenderingAdapter.dll is visible on disk. A dependency used by the DLL may be missing, or the installed runtime may have the wrong architecture.
First determine whether the message appears during Citrix installation, while launching Citrix, or when starting another application. That distinction matters.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and the required runtime
Start here when the error occurs during Receiver installation or after a Windows upgrade.

- Combo headphone/microphone jack - Noble Wedge Lock slot - HDMI; 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1
- Windows 11 Pro
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if Windows Update does not insist on it.
- Retry the Citrix installation.
For older Receiver packages, install the Universal C Runtime update that applies to your Windows version. Citrix’s historical guidance specifically points to KB2999226. Microsoft’s KB2999226 page explains the update and supported applicability.
After installing the runtime, restart again and test Citrix. If the registration error disappears, the prerequisite was the problem. If it remains, continue with a clean Citrix repair rather than manually registering the DLL.
Fix 2: Repair or clean-install Citrix Workspace
For a normal desktop installation, remove the damaged client and install a fresh copy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Citrix Workspace.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the wizard.
- For older Receiver versions, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select Citrix Receiver, and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current Citrix Workspace app installer from Citrix’s official Windows download page.
- Save the installer locally rather than launching it from an email attachment or an untrusted mirror.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Change to the folder containing the installer. For example:
cd "%USERPROFILE%Downloads"
- Run the supported clean-install option:
CitrixWorkspaceApp.exe /CleanInstall
The /CleanInstall option removes leftover Citrix files and registry values before continuing the installation. If your installer uses a different filename, substitute that exact filename.
A successful installation should recreate the Citrix ICA Client files in the appropriate Citrix directory and allow Workspace to open without the DLL message. If the command reports that the file is not recognized, confirm the filename with File Explorer and run the command from the correct folder.
Microsoft Store installation
The Microsoft Store edition has separate uninstall guidance. Remove it through Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or from its Start-menu entry. Do not use the older Receiver cleanup utility against the Store edition. Install the desktop package only if your organization requires that edition and has approved the change.
Fix 3: Check Visual C++ runtime architecture
A 32-bit Citrix component needs the x86 Visual C++ runtime, even on 64-bit Windows. Installing only vc_redist.x64.exe does not satisfy a 32-bit dependency.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Note whether the x86 package is installed.
- Download the supported package from Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Install or repair the x86 package.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry Citrix.
Use the x64 package when a separate 64-bit application needs it. Do not uninstall every Visual C++ entry. Older packages, including Visual C++ 2013 and earlier, remain side by side because unrelated programs may depend on them.
To repair an existing package:
- Select the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable entry.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Restart and test again.
If repairing the x86 runtime changes nothing, return to the Citrix clean-install procedure. Replacing the DLL with a copy from another Citrix release can create a version mismatch.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and permissions
Security software can quarantine a legitimate Citrix file or block an installer from writing registration data.
- Open your antivirus application.
- Review Quarantine, Protection history, or Detected threats.
- Look for
DVCRenderingAdapter.dlland the Citrix installer. - Confirm that the installer came from Citrix.
- Ask your administrator or security product to verify the file before restoring it.
- Prefer reinstalling the complete signed Citrix package instead of restoring an isolated DLL.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If an administrator approves a temporary test, re-enable protection immediately afterward.
Recommended Free Tools
Permissions can cause the same registration failure. An administrator should inspect the Citrix installer log for Access denied, registry permission failures, or blocked file operations. Do not blindly take ownership of registry keys or run generic ACL-repair scripts.
Fix 5: Confirm the Citrix version and installation architecture
A 32-bit DLL cannot be repaired by substituting an arbitrary 64-bit file.
Check the installation type:
C:Program FilesCitrixICA Clientusually indicates a 64-bit per-machine installation.C:Program Files (x86)CitrixICA Clientusually indicates a 32-bit per-machine installation.%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalCitrixICA Clientindicates a per-user installation.
Then:
- Right-click the Citrix executable or DLL.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Details tab.
- Review the Digital Signatures tab.
- Confirm that the file belongs to Citrix and matches the installed product.
If the file is missing, reinstall the same Citrix product family rather than copying a file from an old Receiver computer. Current Citrix downloads use the Workspace app name; an old Receiver error may require a version approved by your organization.
Fix 6: Update display drivers only for launch or rendering failures
A graphics driver is not the first suspect for an MSI registration error. Consider it when Citrix installs successfully but applications fail to launch, the session shows rendering problems, or the error began after a graphics-driver change.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test Citrix.
For a manufacturer driver, download it from the computer or graphics-card manufacturer. Avoid random driver repositories. If Device Manager reports that the driver is current but the problem remains, check the manufacturer’s support page for the exact Windows version and hardware model.
Manually hunting through hardware pages and guessing which of several drivers is stale can take longer than the Citrix repair itself. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that shows what it identifies; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is optional. Reinstalling Citrix remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to Citrix.
Fix 7: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They normally do not restore a third-party Citrix DLL, so use them when Windows Update, system files, or other Windows features are also malfunctioning.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Citrix installation.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows resources. Microsoft documents both in its DISM repair guidance and System File Checker documentation.

Repeatedly running repair commands without knowing what changed makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan showing what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and using it is optional. For a Citrix-owned DLL, reinstalling the complete Citrix package remains the definitive repair.
Should you run regsvr32?
Usually, no.
The installer’s phrase “failed to register” means the Citrix MSI encountered a registration problem. It does not prove that you should manually run:
regsvr32 DVCRenderingAdapter.dll
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes the command for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. If this Citrix DLL does not expose the expected entry point, the command can produce a misleading error. Using the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit regsvr32.exe can also make the situation worse.
Use manual registration only when Citrix gives instructions for the exact product version and file. Otherwise repair the runtime, permissions, or Citrix installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why downloading the DLL is the wrong fix
Do not download dvcrenderingadapter.dll from a random DLL website and place it in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
That approach can deliver malware, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture. It can also hide the real problem, such as a missing runtime or damaged Citrix installation. Loading a DLL from an unexpected directory can introduce search-order and DLL-hijacking risks, as Microsoft explains in its DLL search order and DLL security documentation.
Use the official Citrix Workspace installer instead. If manual file recovery is unavoidable in an enterprise environment, extract the file from the exact trusted Citrix package, verify its signature, restore it only to the original Citrix directory, and follow with a full repair or reinstall.

FAQ
Is dvcrenderingadapter.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a Citrix application component and should not normally be copied into a Windows system directory.
Does it belong to Citrix Receiver or Workspace?
It is primarily associated with older Citrix Receiver and ICA Client packages. Current Citrix downloads are branded Citrix Workspace app, which may use different files and paths.
Is the file malware?
The filename alone does not indicate malware. Verify the file’s location, Citrix ownership, digital signature, and the source installer. A copy from a random DLL site is not trustworthy merely because its filename matches.
Why does a 64-bit Windows computer need an x86 runtime?
The Citrix component is identified as 32-bit. Microsoft’s runtime rule is based on the application architecture, so a 32-bit component requires the x86 Visual C++ Redistributable even on 64-bit Windows.
Should I use System Restore?
Only as a fallback when the issue began after a known system change and Citrix repair, runtime installation, and cleanup have failed. System Restore is not a direct repair for this Citrix DLL.
Can Device Manager fix the error?
Only when the underlying problem is a graphics or rendering failure after Citrix has installed. It will not repair a Citrix MSI registration error or restore a missing application DLL.
