dvwssr.dll is a legacy Microsoft Design Tools component, not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL. If Windows reports that dvwssr.dll is missing, the safest fix is usually to identify the old application or web-server extension requesting it rather than downloading a replacement file.

- Which program or executable displays the error? Note the window title and the program named in the message.
- When does it appear? Check whether it happens at startup, when opening an old website, or only when launching a particular application.
- Where is the file expected? Look for a path such as
/_vti_bin/_vti_aut/dvwssr.dll, an old IIS directory, or an application folder. - Is the PC running a legacy web server? A normal home or office PC is unlikely to need this component. A machine hosting an old IIS, FrontPage, or Visual InterDev site requires a more careful security decision.
Windows may show messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because dvwssr.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “dvwssr.dll was not found.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “Cannot find dvwssr.dll.”
These are general Windows loader messages. They do not prove that Windows itself should contain the file, and “module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency, IIS mapping, permission, or related legacy component is missing.
What dvwssr.dll actually belongs to
Microsoft describes Dvwssr.dll as the server-side component for the Link View feature in Microsoft Visual InterDev 1.0. Its internal description is Microsoft Design Tool – Link View.

The component was distributed through older Microsoft web-development and server-extension products, including the Windows NT Option Pack and IIS 4.0 ecosystem and FrontPage Server Extensions. Visual InterDev used Link View to generate link views of ASP pages.
Historically, the file could appear under a web extension path similar to:
/_vti_bin/_vti_aut/dvwssr.dll
That path is important. It indicates an old website extension rather than a missing Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, or current Windows library.

For affected servers, Microsoft’s historical remediation was to delete the file or upgrade the relevant server extensions. Deleting it removes Visual InterDev 1.0’s Link View feature, but it is not the same as damaging Windows.
Is dvwssr.dll a Windows system file?
There is no reliable evidence that dvwssr.dll ships as a standard Windows 10 or Windows 11 component in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
That means you should not assume that:
- Windows Update will normally install it
- SFC should restore it
- DISM should provide it
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables contain it
- DirectX contains it
- .NET contains it
- copying it into
System32will repair the original application
The file is legitimate in its original Microsoft Design Tools and legacy web-server context. However, an unexpected copy in a temporary directory, a modern application folder, or a random startup program deserves investigation.
Fix 1: Identify and repair or remove the old parent program
This is the most likely solution for a modern PC.
A missing-DLL message often remains after someone has removed part of an old installation. For example, an obsolete website, scheduled task, startup entry, IIS mapping, or helper executable may still request dvwssr.dll after Visual InterDev, FrontPage Server Extensions, or related software was partially uninstalled.
Find the program named in the error
- Reproduce the error.
- Read the title bar and the first line of the message.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- If the suspected program is running, right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Record the executable path and publisher.
- Right-click the executable, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures and Details tabs.
If the error appears during startup:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Startup.
- Turn off an entry that clearly belongs to an obsolete, unidentified, or already-uninstalled program.
- Restart Windows and check whether the message returns.
You can also inspect startup entries in Task Manager > Startup apps. Do not disable essential security, touchpad, audio, or graphics entries merely because their names are unfamiliar. Investigate the file path first.
Check installed applications
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Visual InterDev, FrontPage, FrontPage Server Extensions, Microsoft Design Tools, or an old web-authoring package.
- Select the matching entry.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Use Repair or Modify if the option is provided.
- If the software is no longer required, choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
Older software may not appear in the modern Installed apps list. In that case:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Review Programs and Features.
- Select the legacy Microsoft web-development or server-extension product.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what is available.
If repair requires original installation media, use the licensed installation source for that specific product. Do not substitute a DLL from a different FrontPage or Visual InterDev generation. Microsoft published historical FrontPage Server Extensions packages, including fpse1002.exe and fpse0901.exe, in MS02-053, but those packages are historical and are not current Windows runtime downloads.
Check whether Windows is hosting an old IIS site
If the machine is a server or development workstation, determine whether IIS is involved:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
inetmgrand press Enter. - In IIS Manager, expand Sites.
- Select each relevant site.
- Check Basic Settings to see its physical path.
- Inspect the site directory for
_vti_bin,_vti_aut, or references todvwssr.dll.
If IIS Manager is not installed:
- Open Settings > System > Optional features.
- Select More Windows features.
- Expand Internet Information Services.
- Review whether IIS is enabled.
- Do not enable legacy IIS or FrontPage features merely to make the error disappear.
If the website is no longer needed, remove the obsolete application and disable the old IIS site. If it is still needed, migrate the website to a supported platform or isolate the old server while planning the migration.
Fix 2: Handle an old server containing dvwssr.dll as a security issue
Do not treat an exposed /_vti_bin/_vti_aut/dvwssr.dll endpoint as an ordinary missing-file problem.
Microsoft’s historical guidance for affected servers was to remove dvwssr.dll or upgrade the relevant server extensions. The recommended action for a legacy server is therefore:
- Take a verified backup of the website and server configuration.
- Determine which site and virtual directory contain the file.
- Remove public access to the old site while investigating.
- Upgrade or migrate the server extension if a supported migration path exists.
- If Link View is not required, delete the vulnerable file as described by Microsoft’s MS00-025 guidance.
- Test the website and review IIS logs.
- Plan to retire the obsolete server rather than restoring the file later.
Deleting the file can stop Link View from generating ASP link views. It is not a general-purpose repair for a modern desktop program. If a current application unexpectedly requests the file, identify that application first.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined a known legacy copy
If the error began immediately after a security scan, the file may have been quarantined. This does not automatically mean the file should be restored. A legitimate old Microsoft file can still belong to an obsolete and vulnerable server component.
To inspect Windows Security:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the relevant detection.
- Record the original file path, detection name, date, and affected program.
- Check whether the path belongs to a known Visual InterDev, FrontPage, or IIS installation.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- You recognize the parent application.
- The original location is expected.
- The file came from a licensed Microsoft installation.
- The application or server genuinely still requires it.
- You have assessed the security consequences of bringing the old component back.
Microsoft documents the quarantine recovery process for Defender in Restore quarantined files. If the file came from an unknown application or suspicious directory, leave it quarantined and remove the parent software instead.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components only when Windows corruption is plausible
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They are unlikely to restore dvwssr.dll because Microsoft does not identify it as a normal current Windows component.

- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program again.
The supported order is DISM followed by SFC, as described by Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.
If DISM and SFC report that Windows is healthy but the same program still requests dvwssr.dll, that result supports the conclusion that the missing component belongs to an old application or server extension.

Repeating SFC and DISM without identifying the requesting program rarely helps. If you want a guided scan that shows what needs attention before you repeat manual repair commands, Outbyte PC Repair can provide that assessment; its free scan identifies issues, while repairs are completed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the original application remains the definitive fix when that application is the source.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent software change
System Restore is useful when the warning began immediately after removing legacy software, changing IIS features, or installing an update.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error started.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be changed.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Microsoft explains that System Restore can roll back system files, registry settings, installed programs, drivers, and updates without affecting personal files in its System Restore guidance.
System Restore may bring back an obsolete component without addressing its security risk. If the affected machine is an internet-facing IIS server, restoration should be followed by an upgrade, migration, or removal plan.

dvwssr.dll is not normally a hardware-driver file. Device Manager is therefore not the first place to look. Use it only when the error appears alongside a broader device or application problem and the identified parent program depends on a device driver.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the affected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a failed device:
- Right-click it in Device Manager.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver from the computer or device manufacturer’s official support source.
If you are manually tracking several hardware versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is completed by the full version. This is optional and will not replace the legacy Microsoft component if the application itself is the cause.
Do not download dvwssr.dll from a DLL website
Avoid websites offering a standalone dvwssr.dll download, automated DLL repair tools, or instructions to copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64.
That approach can fail because:
- The file may be modified or malicious.
- The version may not match the original product.
- The architecture may be wrong.
- Dependent legacy files may still be missing.
- IIS mappings, permissions, and registry settings are not recreated.
- You may restore a vulnerable server component that Microsoft advised removing.
There is no current Microsoft-supported Visual InterDev 1.0 redistributable identified for modern Windows. Use the original licensed application media only when the old software is genuinely required, and use Microsoft’s historical guidance when managing an old IIS or FrontPage server.
Should you run regsvr32 dvwssr.dll?
No, not as a generic repair.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents its purpose and syntax in the regsvr32 command reference.

may produce a registration error without fixing the application. That error does not prove the file is missing, and successful registration would not recreate an IIS virtual-directory mapping or repair the original server configuration.
Find the real caller with Event Viewer or Process Monitor
If uninstalling the old software did not stop the warning, identify what still launches it.
Event Viewer
- Press
Win+R. - Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Choose Filter Current Log.
- Search for events near the time of the error.
- Record the application name, faulting module, and executable path.
Also inspect Applications and Services Logs for entries from the relevant application or IIS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsProcess Monitor
Microsoft Sysinternals Process Monitor can reveal which process searches for the file.
- Start Process Monitor as administrator.
- Open Filter > Filter.
- Add a filter where Path contains
dvwssr.dll. - Select Add, then Apply.
- Reproduce the error.
- Review the Process Name, PID, Path, and Result columns.
- Double-click an event to inspect the full process and file path.
A NAME NOT FOUND result shows where the process searched. It does not prove that copying the file to that location is safe. Use the parent executable, publisher, and installation directory to decide whether to repair, uninstall, or investigate the program.
What to do if the error continues after uninstalling
A removed application can leave behind a startup entry, scheduled task, service, IIS mapping, or shortcut.
Check these locations:
- Settings > Apps > Startup
- Task Manager > Startup apps
- Task Scheduler Library
- Services from
services.msc - IIS sites and application pools
- Shortcuts in the Startup folder
- The application’s remaining installation directory
For Task Scheduler:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
taskschd.mscand press Enter. - Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose Actions point to the removed program.
- Disable the task first.
- Restart and confirm the error is gone.
- Delete the task only after verifying that it belongs to the obsolete software.
If every repair attempt fails, uninstall the obsolete parent product, disable the old IIS or FrontPage feature, migrate the website, or restore the complete server from a known-good backup. Do not keep adding copies of dvwssr.dll to Windows folders.
FAQ
Is dvwssr.dll malware?
Not automatically. The original file was a legitimate Microsoft Design Tools component associated with Visual InterDev and legacy FrontPage/IIS software. An unexpected copy, unknown publisher, or suspicious path should still be scanned and investigated.
Is it safe to delete dvwssr.dll?
On an affected legacy server, Microsoft documented deletion as a security remediation, with loss of Visual InterDev 1.0 Link View functionality. On a development machine, confirm that the old feature is not required before deleting the file.
Does the file belong in System32 or SysWOW64?
There is no reliable evidence that it is a normal Windows component for either directory. Do not copy it there. A 32-bit legacy web extension may run on 64-bit Windows, but architecture must be determined from the actual parent application and installation package.
Should I reinstall Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. Those packages are not identified as sources of dvwssr.dll. Repair or remove the legacy Microsoft web-development or server-extension software that requests it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can SFC restore the file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while dvwssr.dll belongs to legacy application and server-extension software. Run SFC and DISM only when there is separate evidence of Windows component corruption.
Why does the message say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
The named DLL may depend on another missing file, or the old IIS mapping, permissions, or configuration may be broken. Check the complete path and the parent process rather than assuming the named file alone is the problem.
