- Only one game, Unreal Engine project, browser, or graphics program fails: repair or verify that application first. This is the most likely fix.
- The problem started after an update, crash, migration, mod installation, or disk cleanup: verify the application files, then reinstall it if verification fails.
- Windows Security recently detected or quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before reinstalling or restoring anything.
- Several games or graphics applications fail: update Windows and the graphics driver, then check Windows component health.
- The file exists beside the program but still will not load: suspect a missing dependency, wrong architecture, damaged file, blocked signature, or an incompatible copy.
- You downloaded a replacement DLL: remove it from the application folder and use the program’s official repair or installation source instead.
Do not begin by copying dxil.dll into C:WindowsSystem32. This is normally an application-local dependency, not a file that every Windows installation should receive in that folder.
What dxil.dll does
dxil.dll is a Microsoft DirectX Shader Compiler component. It validates and supports hashing or signing for shaders compiled into DirectX Intermediate Language, or DXIL. DXIL is used with modern Direct3D graphics and shader models.

Microsoft’s DirectX Shader Compiler documentation identifies dxil.dll as the validator library. Official DXC packages commonly include dxil.dll, dxcompiler.dll, and dxc.exe, but they are different files:
dxil.dllvalidates DXIL shader code and provides related support.dxcompiler.dllcontains compiler functionality used by applications.dxc.exeis the command-line compiler executable.
The Windows SDK can contain copies under its redistribution folders, including paths similar to:
%ProgramFiles(x86)%Windows Kits10RedistD3Dx64
%ProgramFiles(x86)%Windows Kits10RedistD3Dx86
Applications may also bundle their own compatible copy. Unreal Engine, games, development tools, browsers, and WebGPU software can keep the file beside their executable or inside a renderer or shader-related subfolder. Those copies can legitimately differ by version and architecture. The Windows SDK downloads page is the appropriate Microsoft source for SDK installers.

DXIL execution also depends on Windows and graphics-driver support. Installing an SDK or copying a file from another application does not necessarily repair the program that is failing.
1. Verify or repair the affected application
Read the complete path in the error dialog. It may point to a game folder, an Unreal Engine directory, a browser installation, or a development tool. That path tells you which program owns the failing copy.
Steam games
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish downloading or replacing damaged files.
- Restart Steam and launch the game again.
If Steam reports that files were replaced but the error remains, restart Windows and verify the game once more. Then check whether the error path belongs to a different installation, such as an old mod folder or a second game library.
Steam’s official file verification instructions describe this repair process.
Epic Games Launcher and Unreal Engine
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the affected game or Unreal Engine installation.
- Select the three dots beside it.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Allow the launcher to redownload missing or corrupted files.
For Unreal Engine, verify the specific engine installation named in the error path. Verifying only the launcher does not necessarily repair a damaged engine directory. Epic’s Unreal Engine installation guidance covers verification and repair.
When verification succeeds, launch the program again. If it still fails, uninstall and reinstall that exact game, engine version, or application from its official launcher. Do not preserve manually copied DLLs during the reinstall.
Other applications
If the program has a built-in repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Open Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
If there is no Repair option, use the application’s official installer and choose Repair, Modify, or Reinstall if offered. A reinstall is the definitive fix when the application’s private copy of dxil.dll is incomplete or mismatched.
2. Check whether antivirus removed the file
A security product may quarantine a file after an update, modification, or false detection.

- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the affected application or
dxil.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect its location and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The path belongs to a trusted application installation.
- The application came from its official vendor or launcher.
- You have verified that the detection is a false positive.
- The file is not from a mod, crack, unofficial repack, or DLL download site.
Otherwise, reinstall the application. Reinstalling obtains a clean copy from the program’s official source and avoids restoring a potentially unsafe file. Microsoft explains the risks and decisions in its Protection History guidance.
After restoring or reinstalling, update the security definitions and test the application. If the file is quarantined again, do not repeatedly restore it. Investigate the detection and contact the application vendor.
3. Update Windows and the graphics driver
DXIL shaders require compatible operating-system and graphics-driver support. This step is especially relevant when several graphics applications fail or the problem began after a Windows or driver change.
Recommended Free Tools
Install Windows updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no additional updates are offered.
Do not assume that a Windows update will restore an application-local dxil.dll. It supplies platform support, while the affected program remains responsible for its bundled files.
Update the display adapter
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or other adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows when the installation completes.
For the newest compatible driver, use the graphics processor manufacturer or computer manufacturer’s official support page. If the problem began immediately after a driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Restart and test the program.
Manually installing a driver does not replace a missing application-local DLL. Verify or reinstall the affected application separately.
When identifying an outdated driver across several devices is taking longer than expected, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show what needs attention; the free scan identifies the issue, while driver installation is handled by the full version. For a program-specific dxil.dll failure, reinstalling or verifying that program remains the definitive fix.
4. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application needs a compatible x86 dependency. A 64-bit application needs an x64-compatible dependency. The presence of a file with the right name does not make it interchangeable.

Look at the error path and the program’s installation folder. A path under Program Files (x86) often indicates a 32-bit application, while Program Files commonly contains 64-bit software, although vendors can use different layouts.
Do not replace the file with one copied from:
- Another game or application
- A different Unreal Engine installation
- An unrelated Windows SDK version
- An x86 folder when the program is 64-bit
- An x64 folder when the program is 32-bit
Use the application’s own launcher or official installer so that dxil.dll, dxcompiler.dll, and other dependencies match the program’s expected build.
5. Install only the runtime the application actually requires
The legacy DirectX End-User Runtime is usually not the answer to a modern dxil.dll error. Microsoft describes that package as supplying older components such as D3DX, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, XACT, and Managed DirectX. It does not represent a general modern DXC validator installer.

- A Windows SDK is appropriate for development work, not as a reason to overwrite a game’s bundled dependency.
- A GPU driver can provide platform compatibility, but it does not restore a deleted application file.
Install these components only when the application’s official requirements specifically call for them.

Use this step when multiple graphics applications fail, Windows reports damaged components, or application repairs have not isolated the problem. It will not normally repair a private dxil.dll inside a game or engine folder.
First, open an elevated terminal:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run these commands one at a time:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish and test the affected programs.
Microsoft documents this DISM-then-SFC order in its Windows repair guidance. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run it again. If only one application still fails, return to that application’s verification or reinstall process rather than repeating SFC indefinitely.

It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the application that owns dxil.dll.
7. Do not use regsvr32 for dxil.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
Do not run:
regsvr32 dxil.dll
DXC deployment guidance places dxcompiler.dll and dxil.dll beside the application that uses them. These files are normally loaded by that application and do not need Windows registry registration. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains its registration purpose.
A registration error does not repair a missing, damaged, blocked, or wrong-architecture file.
8. Advanced checks when the file exists
A message such as “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean dxil.dll itself is absent. A dependency of that file may be missing, or Windows may reject the file.
Check the following:
- Confirm the exact path shown by the error.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Inspect the Digital Signatures tab when present.
- Check Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history.
- Open Event Viewer by searching for it in Start.
- Select Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an Application Error entry at the time of the failure.
- Record the failing application and module paths.
- Remove unofficial DLL copies from the application folder.
- Re-run the vendor’s verification or repair process.
If a different copy earlier in the DLL search path is being loaded, the application vendor may need to identify the conflict. Do not delete files from Windows folders or rename dependencies without a recovery plan.
Frequently asked questions
Is dxil.dll part of Windows?
It can exist in Windows SDK and developer environments, and Windows supports DXIL, but the copy used by a game or application is commonly supplied by that program. Treat the path in the error as the ownership clue.
Should I copy dxil.dll into System32?
No. That can create an architecture or version mismatch and does not repair the application’s expected bundle.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I download dxil.dll by itself?
Avoid random DLL download sites. A bare file may contain malware, belong to the wrong architecture, or be incompatible with the application. Use the official game launcher, application installer, Windows SDK, or official DXC distribution appropriate to your work.
Will the DirectX End-User Runtime fix this?
Usually not. It targets older DirectX SDK components and is not a general installer for the modern DXC dxil.dll validator.
Why does regsvr32 fail?
Because dxil.dll is not normally repaired through DLL registration. The application should load its matching copy beside its executable or within its own directories.
What if every repair succeeds but the error remains?
Recheck the exact path, architecture, antivirus history, Event Viewer, and application installation being repaired. If only one program fails, reinstall that program. If every graphics application fails, investigate Windows corruption, driver failure, storage errors, or malware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrevention
Keep games, engines, browsers, and development tools updated through their official launchers. Avoid manually replacing bundled DLLs and be cautious with mods that overwrite renderer or shader directories. After a crash or interrupted update, verify the affected application before copying files. Keeping Windows and the graphics driver current also helps maintain the operating-system and driver support required by DXIL.
