Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, write down:
- The program that shows the error
- Whether it appears when Windows starts, when one application opens, or only in Event Viewer
- The complete error message
- The file path shown in the message, if there is one
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Any recent Windows update, application installation, antivirus alert, or system cleanup
dxptaskringtone.dll is a real Microsoft Windows DLL associated in public inventories with Microsoft Ringtone Editor. It is an older Windows component, not a normal Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, .NET assembly, or standalone Microsoft application. If dxptaskringtone.dll is missing, repair Windows before trying to copy a replacement file.
What dxptaskringtone.dll is
Public Windows file inventories identify the file as Microsoft Ringtone Editor, associated with Microsoft Corporation and Windows. Windows 7-era component-store listings show the file in both x86 and amd64 component paths. Public metadata also lists Windows 7-era version 6.1.7601.17514 and a Windows 8-era build, so exact version, size, and architecture should not be treated as universal.

The name does not establish that “Microsoft Ringtone Editor” is a separately installable product. There is no reliable evidence that you can download it as an independent Microsoft application.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn a modern Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation, the file may be obsolete, absent, stored in the component store, or requested incorrectly by an older application. That distinction matters:

Understand the error before repairing it
These messages do not all indicate the same problem:
| Message | Likely meaning |
|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because dxptaskringtone.dll is missing from your computer.” | Windows or an application cannot find the requested file. |
| “dxptaskringtone.dll was not found.” | The file or one of its dependencies is unavailable in the expected search path. |
| “Error loading dxptaskringtone.dll. The specified module could not be found.” | The DLL may be missing, or a dependency required by it may be missing. |
| “The procedure entry point … could not be located.” | The wrong DLL version or architecture may have been loaded. |
| “The file dxptaskringtone.dll is missing or corrupted.” | The file may have failed integrity checks or been altered. |
“The system cannot find the file specified” under Microsoft-Windows-DxpTaskRingtone/Analytic |
Usually an Event Viewer channel problem, not proof that an application needs the DLL. |
Do not assume that copying a file with the right name fixes all of these conditions.
Fix 1: Restart, update Windows, and retry
This is the quickest safe check for a component that disappeared during an update or restart.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Save your work and restart Windows.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart again when Windows requests it.
- Open the affected program.
If the application now opens, the problem may have been caused by an incomplete update or pending component repair. If the same error returns, continue with DISM and SFC.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Run these tools even if the error appears to come from an application. A protected Windows file can be missing while an older program is the first thing that exposes the damage.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows image and may use Windows Update as its repair source.
Run SFC second
After restarting:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows once more.
- Try the program again.
A successful result usually says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations or found corrupt files and repaired them. If the error remains, note the exact SFC result before moving on.
Repeatedly hunting through folders and rerunning repairs without knowing whether the Windows image changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows repair remains the appropriate first step.
If DISM cannot find source files
Install pending updates and restart first. Then run DISM again. If it still cannot repair the image, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid source that matches the installed Windows edition, build, and architecture. Do not use a random folder or an unrelated installation image. Windows 7 uses different DISM behavior and options, so do not blindly apply every Windows 10 or Windows 11 command to it.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine or remove a system file after detecting an alteration. This is a possibility, not proof that dxptaskringtone.dll is commonly quarantined.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an item naming the DLL or a related Windows component.
- Review its path and detection details.
- Restore it only when the path, Microsoft signature, and Windows installation identity are consistent.
If the detection is suspicious, do not restore the file. Run a full scan, then use DISM and SFC to rebuild trusted Windows components. Do not disable antivirus protection merely to copy a DLL.
Fix 4: Repair the application that requests the file
If the error appears only when one old application starts, that application may be requesting an obsolete Windows component or may have its own damaged files.
First try its built-in repair option:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help:
- Uninstall the affected application from Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer only from the application’s original developer or a trusted installation source supplied with the product.
- Install the same architecture where applicable.
- Run the application again.
If the program is very old, right-click its shortcut, select Properties > Compatibility, and use the compatibility troubleshooter. Do not assume that installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will restore this particular Windows DLL. There is no established connection between those redistributables and dxptaskringtone.dll.
Fix 5: Check architecture and file location
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows can use different system locations from a 64-bit application. System32 contains native system binaries on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system binaries. The names are confusing, so do not select a destination based only on the folder name.

The file may also appear under WinSxS, the Windows component store, rather than as a freely copyable file in an application directory. If it exists in the component store but is missing from its active location, use DISM and SFC instead of manually copying it.
A “not designed to run on Windows” message or an entry-point error often indicates a version or architecture mismatch. A replacement DLL from another Windows installation can make that situation worse.
Fix 6: Update related drivers only when the application needs them
dxptaskringtone.dll is not a driver, and Device Manager will not repair a missing DLL. However, if the error appears in software that depends on audio, Bluetooth, phone, or media hardware, check the related device separately.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Sound, video and game controllers or Bluetooth.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not uninstall a working device merely because this DLL is missing. Obtain drivers from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer, and confirm that the driver matches the Windows architecture.
Manually checking many device entries and guessing which driver is stale can be repetitive. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it will not replace the need to repair or reinstall the application that requests this DLL.

If applications work normally and the only message appears while opening Event Viewer > Custom Views > Administrative Events, check whether it says:
Microsoft-Windows-DxpTaskRingtone/Analytic
The system cannot find the file specified
This can be a stale or deprecated event-log channel left after a Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 upgrade. It is not the same as an application launch failure.
The documented workaround is narrow:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
regeditand press Enter. - Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionWINEVTChannelsMicrosoft-Windows-DxpTaskRingtone/Analytic
- Right-click the channel key and select Export.
- Save the backup file somewhere accessible.
- Confirm that the key is the obsolete
DxpTaskRingtone/Analyticchannel. - Delete only that channel key.
- Restart Windows and reopen Event Viewer.
Do not delete unrelated registry keys. This workaround does not repair a missing DLL used by an application.
Do not download or register the DLL manually
Random DLL archives can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file with a misleading name. A copied DLL may also depend on other missing files and leave the underlying component-store damage untouched.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or the original application installer instead. Avoid copying the file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder unless an advanced Microsoft repair procedure specifically requires it.
regsvr32 is also generally irrelevant:
regsvr32 dxptaskringtone.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no public evidence that this Windows component is a COM or ActiveX server requiring registration. A “module was loaded but the entry point was not found” message would not repair it.
If SFC still cannot repair the file
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not fix some of them:
- Save the result.
- Review
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.logfor details. - Run DISM again and confirm that it completes successfully.
- Restart and run SFC again.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Use System Restore if the problem began immediately after an update or software installation.
- Consider an in-place Windows repair or Windows recovery when component corruption continues.
System Restore may reverse recent system changes, but it is not guaranteed to restore every application or affect personal files. Back up important data before advanced recovery work.
To verify authenticity, inspect a file’s location, open Properties > Digital Signatures, and confirm Microsoft as the signer where a signature is present. A signature check does not replace DISM and SFC, but it helps distinguish a Windows file from an arbitrary copy.
FAQ
Is dxptaskringtone.dll part of Windows?
Yes, public inventories and Windows component-store evidence associate it with Microsoft Windows. Its exact role is not currently documented in a current Microsoft product page.
Is Microsoft Ringtone Editor a program I can install?
There is no reliable evidence that it is a separately installable Microsoft application. Treat the description as file metadata, not as an installer name.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer contain it?
That is not established. It is mainly associated with older Windows generations, and its absence on a current system is not automatically a fault.
Should I copy it from another computer?
No. Differences in edition, build, architecture, signature, and dependencies can cause new errors. Repair the Windows image instead.
Why does only one application report the error?
The application may be obsolete, damaged, or incorrectly requesting an older Windows component. Repair or reinstall that application after running DISM and SFC.
What details should I provide if the error continues?
Record the Windows version and build, full error text, affected program, file path, recent update or reinstall, SFC and DISM results, and whether the message appears only in Event Viewer.
