pdfnetc.dll is a third-party PDF processing library, not a Windows system file. When pdfnetc.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the application that installed it instead of copying a replacement into System32.
The file is associated with the PDFNet SDK, historically developed by PDFTron and now maintained by Apryse. It can be bundled with document software, PDF viewers, EndNote, Kofax SignDoc Web, or a custom application built with the SDK. The filename alone does not identify the correct version, architecture, or installation folder.

Before fixing pdfnetc.dll, identify the parent application
Read the complete error dialog first. It may identify the program that failed, such as EndNote, a PDF viewer, a document-management program, or a company-specific application.
If the dialog does not name the application:
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager. - Select Details.
- Look for the executable that was launching when the error appeared.
- Right-click it and select Open file location.
- Note the application name, installation folder, and whether the executable is under
Program FilesorProgram Files (x86).
Also check Event Viewer:
- Press
Win + R. - Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Expand Windows Logs and select Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Record the failing executable, faulting module, and exception information.
The parent executable determines which pdfnetc.dll is correct. A copy supplied for a 32-bit program may not work with a 64-bit program, and a DLL from one PDFNet-based product may be incompatible with another.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
This is the most likely solution for an ordinary Windows user. An incomplete update, failed uninstall, damaged installation, or deleted application file can remove pdfnetc.dll or leave the application with mismatched files.
Try Windows repair first
For a Microsoft Store or repair-capable desktop application:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application again.
If there is no Repair option, use the desktop installer:

Win + R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, if available.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
If repair does not work, download the installer from the application’s official vendor or use the original installation media. Uninstall the program only after confirming that you have its license, activation details, templates, and documents.
Then:
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current version from the vendor.
- Launch the application before restoring optional add-ons or custom extensions.
A successful repair normally means the original program opens without the DLL dialog. If the same error returns immediately, check antivirus history and architecture before repeatedly reinstalling.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may quarantine a genuine application DLL after an update or after the file changes. Do not restore it automatically. First verify that the file belongs to the application and that the application came from its official vendor.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries created when the application stopped launching.
- Expand the relevant detection.
- Check the original file path and the affected application.
- Restore or allow the file only if the path, application, digital signature, and vendor installation all look legitimate.
If antivirus removed pdfnetc.dll, reinstall the parent application after resolving the detection. Reinstalling is safer than restoring a file that may have been modified.

If the same file is quarantined again, do not keep restoring it. Update the security definitions, scan the installer, contact the application vendor, and investigate whether the installation has been altered.
Fix 3: Match the application architecture
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A 32-bit process needs a 32-bit native pdfnetc.dll. A 64-bit process needs a 64-bit copy. A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows still needs the x86 version.
To check the process architecture:
- Start the affected application until the error appears, if possible.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl + Shift + Esc. - Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also inspect the application folder. Programs installed under C:Program Files (x86) are commonly 32-bit, while programs under C:Program Files are commonly 64-bit, but the folder alone is not definitive.
Do not mix files from different SDK packages. An Apryse/PDFNet deployment may require compatible versions of:

PDFNet.jar - wrapper assemblies

If one file was replaced manually, reinstall the complete application or SDK package. The native DLL should normally be beside the application executable or in the output directory defined by the application, not in an arbitrary Windows folder.
A wrong architecture can produce an “unable to start correctly” message rather than a simple missing-file message. If the DLL exists beside the executable but still fails, suspect architecture, dependencies, permissions, or an incompatible wrapper.
Fix 4: Repair the required Visual C++ runtime
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
Some PDFNet applications, particularly .NET Framework applications, require a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime in addition to pdfnetc.dll. The runtime architecture must match the application.

- Create & Manage PDFs. Create new PDFs, combine multiple files, scan documents, and compress for easy sharing.
- Fill & Sign Forms. Complete forms and digitally sign documents with secure e-signature tools.
For a 32-bit application, install the x86 runtime. For a 64-bit application, install the x64 runtime. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application still requires x86.
Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable download page and install the package recommended by the application vendor. Older applications may require an older runtime alongside a newer one, so do not remove existing redistributables without a reason.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected application.
- Check whether the error changed.
If the message changes from “missing pdfnetc.dll” to “unable to load pdfnetc.dll or one of its dependencies,” the native file may now be present while another dependency remains unavailable. Repair the complete application rather than downloading individual runtime DLLs.
Fix 5: Update the application and Windows
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A vendor update may contain a corrected native library, wrapper, installer, or dependency configuration.
For Windows:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
Then open the affected application’s built-in update screen. If it is managed by a launcher, use that launcher’s verify or repair feature. The exact menu depends on the product.

Windows Update will not normally supply pdfnetc.dll, because this is not a standard Windows component. Updating Windows is useful for broader compatibility and system integrity, but the parent application’s installer remains the correct source for the file.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other programs also fail
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use DISM and SFC only when the computer shows broader Windows problems, such as several unrelated applications failing, damaged Windows features, or repeated system errors. These commands do not replace the missing third-party application file.
First run DISM:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart and test the application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program again. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM once more, restart, and repeat SFC. If only the PDFNet-based application fails, stop treating this as a Windows system-file problem and reinstall that application instead.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds, while the repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the failure is broader
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A graphics or storage driver is not normally the direct source of pdfnetc.dll, but driver corruption can cause wider application crashes or system instability.
To check for driver problems:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, and System devices.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message under the General tab.
- Use Update driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
Do not uninstall a working device driver solely because pdfnetc.dll is missing. Driver repair is relevant when Event Viewer shows device failures, the system is crashing, or multiple applications fail after a driver change.

Do not run regsvr32 on pdfnetc.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, usually COM or ActiveX components. pdfnetc.dll is normally a native runtime library loaded by the parent application, not a self-registering component.
Running this command is therefore not a normal repair:

regsvr32 pdfnetc.dll
It may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not prove the file is defective. Do not copy the DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Developer deployment notes
If you maintain an application built with PDFNet, restore the exact native library supplied with that application’s SDK and place it in the executable or build output directory. Apryse documentation shows PDFNetC.dll being copied from the SDK’s library directory into the application output directory.
Keep the native library and its wrapper from the same compatible SDK build. A .NET application may need both PDFNetC.dll and PDFTronDotNet.dll; Java applications may require the matching native library and Java archive. Confirm the target process architecture before packaging x86, x64, or ARM64 files.
Do not replace a working deployment with a newer SDK copy simply because the newer filename matches. Native exports, wrapper expectations, and dependent runtimes can differ.
Causes of pdfnetc.dll errors
| Likely cause | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|
| Incomplete install or update | Repair or reinstall the parent application |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify the detection, then reinstall from the vendor |
| 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch | Install the complete package for the process architecture |
| Missing Visual C++ dependency | Install the vendor-recommended VC++ architecture |
| Damaged user profile or permissions | Test another Windows profile and repair the application |
| Broader Windows corruption | Run DISM and SFC after application repair |
| Mismatched SDK files | Redeploy the complete, compatible SDK package |
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download pdfnetc.dll from a generic DLL website, copy it from another computer, or accept a replacement from an unverified forum. The file may have the wrong version, architecture, exports, signature, or embedded malware. Even a genuine copy may not match the application’s wrapper or other SDK files.

If the error remains
Collect this information before contacting the application vendor:
- The exact error text
- The parent application and version
- The executable name
- The installation path
- Whether the process is 32-bit, 64-bit, or ARM64
- Whether the DLL exists beside the executable
- The DLL’s properties and digital-signature status
- Any antivirus action
- Relevant Event Viewer details
- Whether the problem began after an update, uninstall, cleanup, or restore
If only one application fails, focus on that application’s installer and dependencies. If many unrelated applications report DLL errors, investigate Windows corruption, malware, disk problems, or a damaged user profile.
FAQ
Is pdfnetc.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a third-party PDFNet native library and is not normally supplied as a standard Windows component.
Which program installed pdfnetc.dll?
The filename does not identify one program. It may have been bundled with EndNote, PDF software, document-management software, Kofax SignDoc Web, or a custom PDFNet application. The error dialog, executable path, and installed-app list are the best ways to identify the parent.
Should I copy pdfnetc.dll into System32?
No. The application should load its matching copy from its own installation or output directory.
Does reinstalling Visual C++ always fix it?
No. VC++ repair helps only when the application requires a missing or damaged runtime. If the application file itself is absent or mismatched, repair or reinstall the parent application.
Can I fix it with System File Checker?
Usually not directly. SFC repairs protected Windows resources, while pdfnetc.dll belongs to a third-party application. Use SFC when there are signs of broader Windows corruption.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does the DLL exist but still fail to load?
The process may have the wrong architecture, a required dependency may be missing, the wrapper may be incompatible, antivirus may be blocking the file, or the binary may be damaged. Reinstall the complete matching application package rather than replacing only the DLL.
