dxtmsft.dll Is Missing: A Safe Windows Repair Checklist

Length11 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

“The program can’t start because dxtmsft.dll is missing”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You may also see “dxtmsft.dll was not found,” “Error loading dxtmsft.dll,” or “dxtmsft.dll is not designed to run on Windows.” The file is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a graphics-card driver and not the modern Direct3D runtime.

dxtmsft.dll is described by Microsoft as “DirectX Media — Image DirectX Transforms.” Historical Microsoft update tables identify it as a Windows and Internet Explorer system file, with both x86 and x64 versions documented in Windows servicing packages. See Microsoft’s MS06-067 file table and MS15-043 update file table.

Microsoft Windows 11 (USB)
  • Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
  • Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
  • Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
  • Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
  • The error affects several programs or Windows features: repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
  • Only one old application fails: repair or reinstall that application first.
  • The error began after an update, cleanup, or system repair: install pending updates, then consider System Restore.
  • Windows Security recently detected or quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
  • The message says “not designed to run on Windows”: suspect corruption, an architecture mismatch, or a damaged dependency.
  • The program is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows: confirm that it is using the correct 32-bit system environment rather than copying a 64-bit file beside it.
  • You were told to install DirectX: do not assume the DirectX End-User Runtime will restore this file. Microsoft says that package installs optional legacy side-by-side libraries and does not modify the DirectX runtime built into Windows.

Start with the Windows repair sequence unless the evidence clearly points to one application.

What dxtmsft.dll is and where it belongs

dxtmsft.dll is part of legacy DirectX Media image-transform functionality. It is associated with Microsoft Windows and historical Internet Explorer components. It is not:

  • A graphics-card driver
  • The Visual C++ runtime
  • A general-purpose application DLL
  • Proof that a particular modern game requires a specific DirectX package

On a normal installation, Windows protects this type of component through its servicing system. It is commonly associated with %SystemRoot%System32. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit copy may be associated with %SystemRoot%SysWOW64.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The names are confusing:

  • System32 conventionally contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows.
  • SysWOW64 conventionally contains 32-bit system files on 64-bit Windows.

A 32-bit program needs the 32-bit DLL environment. A 64-bit program needs the 64-bit environment. A file’s name, size, or version number is not enough to determine whether it belongs on your installation. Historical versions vary by Windows release, architecture, and update branch.

Microsoft’s documented file tables show that dxtmsft.dll has been serviced in both x86 and x64 packages. They do not establish that one old version is correct for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

An incomplete or rolled-back Windows or Internet Explorer update can leave a protected component missing or inconsistent.

Windows 11

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install every applicable update.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
  6. Open the affected application again.

Windows 10

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install the available updates.
  6. Restart Windows and test the application.

If the program starts normally afterward, the missing component was likely restored by Windows servicing. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than searching for an individual DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the primary fix for a missing or corrupted Windows component. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as its source.

Run DISM

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window while it is working.

When DISM finishes, run SFC in the same administrator window:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the affected program.

How to interpret the result

  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC did not find a protected-file problem. The cause may be an application installation, a missing dependency, or an architecture mismatch.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means the repair found and replaced damaged system files. Restart and test again.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means the repair is incomplete. Restart, run DISM again, and rerun SFC. If it still cannot repair the files, use a matching Windows repair source or consider an in-place Windows repair.

For a repair source, Microsoft documents this form:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid source matching your Windows edition, build, language, and architecture. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary ISO or a different Windows release.

The full Microsoft procedure is in the System File Checker and DISM instructions.

If you prefer not to keep comparing DISM and SFC results manually, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying system issues and show what it finds; its repair is performed by the full version, while Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the authoritative Microsoft repair path.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application

If only one program reports dxtmsft.dll, the application may have a broken installation or may be expecting a legacy dependency that it does not deploy correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the program’s own repair option first.

Repair from Windows Settings

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. On Windows 11, select Installed apps. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
  4. Find the affected program.
  5. Select its menu or entry.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the program again.

Not every desktop application exposes a Repair button. If it does not, look in the application’s Start-menu folder, launcher, or installer for Repair, Verify files, or Scan and repair.

Reinstall from the original vendor

If repair does not work:

  1. Back up the application’s saved data and settings if needed.
  2. Uninstall the application from Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Download or run the installer supplied by the application’s original vendor.
  5. Install the program again.
  6. Restart if the installer requests it.
  7. Test the program before adding unofficial DLL files or compatibility packages.

Do not copy a system DLL into the application directory unless the software vendor specifically supplies and supports that deployment model. A program that needs a private copy should provide it through its own installer.

If reinstalling the application fixes the error while other programs were unaffected, the application installation was the likely cause. If several unrelated programs still fail, return to Windows servicing repair.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security Protection history

Antivirus quarantine is another possible cause, particularly if the error appeared immediately after a scan or cleanup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Open any event that mentions dxtmsft.dll.
  8. Check the original path, detection details, and publisher information.

Do not restore a file solely because its filename matches. Microsoft warns that allowing a detected file can expose the device if the file is actually malicious. Restore it only when the original path, Microsoft signature, and surrounding evidence support a false positive. The Microsoft Protection History guidance explains the available actions.

If Protection history shows nothing, that does not prove antivirus was unrelated. Older events are retained only for a limited period. Use DISM and SFC to restore the Windows component instead of disabling antivirus.

If you suspect malware:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Run a Full scan.
  5. If the concern remains, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.

Microsoft’s Defender Offline guidance explains how the offline scan works.

Fix 5: Check architecture and dependencies

A Windows message naming dxtmsft.dll does not always mean that the named file itself is the only problem. The loader may be reporting a missing dependency, an incompatible binary, or a wrong-architecture module.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit

The application’s installer, vendor documentation, or executable properties may identify its architecture. Older applications are commonly 32-bit, even on 64-bit Windows.

Do not replace a 64-bit system file with a 32-bit download, or the reverse. On 64-bit Windows, the correct locations are conventionally:

  • C:WindowsSystem32 for 64-bit system files
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64 for 32-bit system files

These directory names are historical and unintuitive. Do not use the folder name alone to guess which file to download.

The safe approach is to let Windows servicing restore the correct copy. If only one program fails, repair that program so its dependencies are installed through its supported installer.

Look for a dependency error

If DISM and SFC complete successfully but the application still reports the DLL, note whether the exact message changes. A loader message such as “The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency required by dxtmsft.dll, not necessarily the file named in the dialog.

Do not solve this by adding several unrelated runtime packages. Identify the affected application and use its supported repair or reinstall process.

Fix 6: Do not confuse this file with the DirectX End-User Runtime

Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer is frequently suggested for old game errors. Microsoft states that the package installs optional legacy side-by-side libraries for older software and does not modify the DirectX runtime installed in Windows.

That means installing the package is not a reliable way to restore dxtmsft.dll. If the affected program specifically requires those optional legacy libraries, use the official Microsoft package or the program vendor’s instructions. If Windows reports that this system component is missing or corrupted, use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.

dxtmsft.dll is also not a graphics driver. Installing a new NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel driver will not normally replace this Windows component.

Fix 7: Update a driver only when the symptoms point to a driver

A driver update is appropriate for display crashes, missing adapters, rendering failures, or device errors, but it is not the normal repair for a missing dxtmsft.dll.

To check display drivers:

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the listed adapter.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  8. Test the application again.

You can also install applicable driver updates through Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, when Windows offers them. Use the computer or graphics-device manufacturer’s official support channel when Windows does not provide the required driver.

If you are tired of hunting through hardware entries and guessing which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; the driver installation is performed by the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing dxtmsft.dll with Windows servicing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Consider System Restore after a recent change

Use System Restore when the problem began after a driver installation, Windows update, cleanup utility, or old multimedia program installation and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the matching Control Panel result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  6. Select Next, review the affected programs, and select Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal files. Microsoft’s Windows recovery documentation describes the available recovery options.

After the restore, test the application. If the error returns after Windows Update, install updates one at a time where possible and avoid third-party “DLL repair” utilities.

What not to do

Do not download dxtmsft.dll from a DLL repository

A downloaded file can have:

  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • A version from another Windows release
  • Missing dependencies
  • An altered or malicious binary
  • No connection to the component store used by Windows servicing

File size and filename are not authenticity checks. Do not copy an unknown file into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not routinely run regsvr32

regsvr32 registers DLL components that expose the required registration entry points. It is not a general-purpose repair command.

Some file inventories report registration exports for dxtmsft.dll, but that does not make manual registration the correct fix for a missing or corrupted Windows component. Registration will not repair a damaged binary, restore dependencies, or repair the Windows component store.

Microsoft’s regsvr32 reference documents the command’s purpose. Use it only when the application vendor or Microsoft specifically instructs you to register a component.

Do not toggle Windows Features at random

You can open optional Windows components through:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter optionalfeatures.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Review the Windows Features list.

Do not enable or disable features simply because an error mentions DirectX or Internet Explorer. A legacy application may require a particular optional component, but changing unrelated features is not a substitute for DISM and SFC. If the application vendor specifically identifies a required Windows feature, follow that vendor’s supported instructions and restart afterward.

Frequently asked questions

Is dxtmsft.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?

Yes. It is a genuine Microsoft Windows component described as DirectX Media — Image DirectX Transforms. Microsoft security update tables document it in Windows and Internet Explorer servicing files, including x86 and x64 variants.

Its presence alone does not prove that the computer is clean. Verify the path, Microsoft signature, and overall system integrity when investigating a suspicious copy.

Should I download dxtmsft.dll?

No. Restore it through Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. If one application is affected, repair or reinstall that application from its original vendor.

Will installing DirectX fix the error?

Not necessarily. Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime package installs optional legacy side-by-side libraries and does not modify the DirectX runtime installed in Windows. It should not be treated as a replacement for Windows component repair.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy the file into System32?

No. Windows uses different system locations for different architectures, and a manually copied file may be wrong for the installed Windows build. It can also leave the component store inconsistent.

Should I copy a 32-bit file into SysWOW64?

No. The folder name does not make an unknown download safe or compatible. Let Windows servicing restore the correct file for the installed architecture and update branch.

Why does Windows say the file is not designed to run on Windows?

That wording commonly indicates corruption, an incompatible architecture, or an incompatible binary. It is not by itself proof that the file is malware. Run DISM followed by SFC, then repair the affected application if the error is limited to that program.

What if DISM and SFC report no problems?

Repair or reinstall the affected application, check Protection history, and investigate dependencies. The named DLL may be the visible symptom of a missing dependency or application-specific installation problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if SFC cannot repair the files?

Restart and run DISM again, then rerun SFC. If the result is unchanged, use a matching repair source as Microsoft documents or perform an in-place Windows repair. Do not replace protected files manually.

Is this a graphics-card driver?

No. dxtmsft.dll is a legacy DirectX Media image-transform component. Display drivers are separate software installed for the graphics adapter.

The safe order is straightforward: install Windows updates, run DISM and SFC, repair the one application if only it fails, check Protection history, and use System Restore or a matching Windows repair source when the problem began after a system change.
