pngfilt.dll errors usually appear when Windows or an older application cannot find or load the Microsoft PNG image decoder. You may see messages such as:

  • The program can't start because pngfilt.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
  • This application failed to start because pngfilt.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
  • pngfilt.dll is missing
  • pngfilt.dll was not found
  • pngfilt.dll cannot be loaded
  • pngfilt.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error

The 60-second answer

pngfilt.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component. Its description is IE PNG plugin image decoder, and it is associated with Internet Explorer and older Windows imaging functionality.

Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. First identify whether the failure affects Windows generally or only one old application. Then:

  1. Install pending Windows updates and restart.
  2. Open an elevated Command Prompt.
  3. Run DISM, followed by System File Checker:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows again.
  2. If only one program still fails, repair or reinstall that program from its official source.

The correct copy should come from Windows servicing, Windows Update, installation media, or the affected application’s original installer.

What is pngfilt.dll?

pngfilt.dll is a Microsoft component described as the IE PNG plugin image decoder. It historically supported PNG image handling in Internet Explorer and related Windows components.

It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX redistributable, graphics-card driver, or .NET library. There is no separate official pngfilt.dll redistributable that you should install independently.

The file is associated with Microsoft Windows and is normally Microsoft-signed. Its exact version, size, and presence can vary by Windows release and system configuration. Older records include Internet Explorer and Windows XP-era versions, while documented Windows 10 installations include both 32-bit and 64-bit copies.

A missing file does not, by itself, prove malware. It may have been damaged by an incomplete update, removed by an uninstall or cleanup utility, quarantined by security software, or left unavailable because an old application was incompletely installed.

Where should pngfilt.dll be located?

On 64-bit Windows, the normal system locations have counterintuitive names:

  • %WINDIR%System32 contains native 64-bit system files.
  • %WINDIR%SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications.

This is controlled by Windows file-system redirection. A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application can request the same filename but receive the version intended for their process architecture.

Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32 simply because Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not copy files into both folders. The correct location is restored by Windows servicing or by the application’s installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect the folders:

  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Select the address bar.
  3. Enter %WINDIR%System32 and press Enter.
  4. Repeat with %WINDIR%SysWOW64.
  5. Search for pngfilt.dll.

Finding no file in one folder is not enough to diagnose the problem. The relevant question is which executable is failing and which architecture it uses.

What usually causes the error?

Situation More likely cause Best first repair
Several applications or Windows features fail Damaged or deleted Windows component DISM, then SFC
The issue began after an update Incomplete update or component-store corruption Windows Update, DISM, then SFC
Only one old application fails Damaged application installation Repair or reinstall that application
A 32-bit program fails on 64-bit Windows Architecture or private-copy mismatch Repair the application and restore Windows files
The error appeared after antivirus activity Quarantine or malware cleanup Check Protection history, then scan and repair
SFC and DISM cannot resolve it Deeper system damage Matching repair source, System Restore, or recovery

The complete error text, application name, Windows version and build, reported file path, and whether other programs work are more useful than the filename alone.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

An incomplete Windows update can leave system components inconsistent. Install available updates before attempting manual file replacement.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install all available updates.
  6. Restart when prompted.
  7. Test the application again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Update & Security.
  4. Select Windows Update.
  5. Select Check for updates.
  6. Install the available updates.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Test the affected program.

If Windows Update itself reports corruption or repeatedly fails, continue with DISM and SFC rather than searching for a standalone pngfilt.dll package. Official Windows update packages are distributed through Windows Update, organizational update services, or Microsoft’s update catalog, not as isolated DLL downloads.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the most important fix when multiple applications or Windows features report pngfilt.dll problems.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using the repaired component store.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  3. Note whether DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully.

Run SFC

In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

Restart Windows after both commands complete, then launch the program that reported the error.

How to interpret the result

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file corruption. The problem may be limited to one application, a private copy, or an architecture mismatch.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still cannot repair the files, use a matching Windows installation source or continue to System Restore and recovery options.
  • DISM cannot obtain the repair files: Use a matching Windows installation source with DISM’s /Source option, following Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance. The source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture.

Repeatedly running SFC without addressing a damaged component store usually does not solve the underlying problem.

If manually identifying the damaged component and repeating DISM/SFC is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it finds; its free scan identifies problems, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate first repair for pngfilt.dll.

Fix 3: Repair the affected application

If every other application works and only one older program reports pngfilt.dll, the application may be damaged or may contain a private copy of the DLL.

Use Windows application repair

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps.
  5. Find the affected application.
  6. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  7. Select Advanced options, if available.
  8. Select Repair.
  9. Launch the application again.

On Windows 10, the path may be:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Apps & features.
  5. Select the affected application.
  6. Select Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.

Not every desktop application provides a Repair button. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, uninstall the program and reinstall it from its original vendor, installer, or official launcher.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking function before reinstalling the entire game. That process restores the application’s own files without mixing them with Windows system files.

If the application is very old, confirm whether it is 32-bit. A 32-bit program may use 32-bit dependencies even when installed on 64-bit Windows. Reinstalling the application is safer than copying a DLL into its folder.

Fix 4: Check whether antivirus software quarantined the file

Windows Security or another antivirus product may quarantine a damaged or suspicious file. A missing file after a security event should be investigated, but do not blindly restore it.

Check Windows Security Protection history

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the application.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent actions for pngfilt.dll.
  7. Expand an entry to see its path, detection name, and action.

Restore a quarantined file only if its path and Microsoft digital signature are consistent with a genuine Windows system file. If the file was found in an unexpected application directory, leave it quarantined and run a scan.

For additional checking:

  1. In Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection.
  2. Select Scan options.
  3. Run a Full scan.
  4. If malware is suspected or the system cannot be trusted, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.

After the scan, repair Windows with DISM and SFC. A security product may have removed a file, but restoring an arbitrary copy is not a safe substitute for repairing the operating system.

Fix 5: Verify the file’s signature and architecture

If a copy exists, inspect it before trusting it.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to the file’s location.
  3. Right-click pngfilt.dll.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  6. Select the signer and choose Details.
  7. Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.

Also open the Details tab and review the description, product information, and file version. A documented Windows 10 example uses version 11.00.19041.1, but that is not a universal version number for every Windows release. Do not reject a legitimate file merely because its version differs from that example.

The file’s location matters as much as its signature. A Microsoft-signed file in a normal Windows system directory is different from an unverified file placed beside an application by an unknown installer.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair

regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for restoring missing runtime files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The documented metadata for pngfilt.dll includes COM-related exports such as DllGetClassObject and DllCanUnloadNow, but not the usual DllRegisterServer entry point. Running a command such as this is therefore not the normal fix:

regsvr32 pngfilt.dll

It may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but could not be registered, or that the required entry point was not found.

Very old Internet Explorer repair instructions sometimes recommended registering image-related DLLs. Treat that advice as historical and use it only when a matching legacy installation’s official documentation specifically requires it. For current Windows repair, use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or application repair instead.

Fix 7: Check Windows optional features only when the application requires one

pngfilt.dll is not restored by randomly enabling Windows features. Do not use Optional Features as a substitute for DISM and SFC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a specific legacy application requires a Windows component, check the available features:

Windows 11

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select System.
  4. Select Optional features.
  5. Review installed and available features.
  6. Install only the feature required by the application’s documentation.
  7. Restart if Windows requests it.

Windows 10

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Review the available components.
  5. Change only the setting required by the affected application.
  6. Restart Windows if prompted.

Changing a feature may help an application dependency, but it does not justify downloading pngfilt.dll or placing it manually in a system directory.

Fix 8: Do not start with drivers, Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET

pngfilt.dll is not identified as a file supplied by a Visual C++ redistributable, DirectX package, .NET runtime, or graphics-card driver. Installing those packages at random can add unrelated changes while leaving the actual Windows or application problem untouched.

Device Manager is relevant only if the application also has a separate graphics-driver problem, such as display failures or a driver-specific error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the graphics device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Use Update Driver only when a separate driver issue is established.
  8. Prefer the computer or graphics-hardware manufacturer’s official driver source.

If you are manually checking many devices and repeatedly guessing which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while installing updates requires the full version. It is not a required fix for pngfilt.dll, and a driver update should not replace Windows repair or application reinstallation.

Fix 9: Use System Restore for a recent system change

System Restore can help when the error began after an uninstall, cleanup operation, update, or other system change and an appropriate restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Review the changes.
  8. Select Next, then Finish.
  9. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the selected restore point. Back up important work before using recovery options.

If no suitable restore point exists, use Windows recovery options or an in-place reinstall after backing up data. This is preferable to manually replacing protected system files with downloads of unknown origin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why manual DLL downloads are unsafe

Do not download pngfilt.dll from a DLL repository or copy a random version into:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64
  • An application’s installation folder

That approach can fail because the file may have:

  • The wrong process architecture
  • A version that does not match the Windows build
  • An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
  • Additional dependencies that are also damaged
  • Malware or unwanted modifications

It can also hide the real cause, such as a broken component store or incomplete application installation. Restore the file through Windows servicing or the affected program’s official installer instead.

If the error remains after repair

Collect these details before making further changes:

  1. The complete error message, including the executable name.
  2. The application that fails.
  3. Whether Internet Explorer-related or legacy imaging features are involved.
  4. The Windows edition, version, and build.
  5. Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  6. The exact path shown for pngfilt.dll, if one is displayed.
  7. Whether the failure affects one program or many.
  8. Whether the issue began after Windows Update, an uninstall, disk cleanup, antivirus action, or malware removal.
  9. Whether SFC reported that it could not repair files.
  10. Any relevant entries in Event Viewer.
  11. Whether the problem occurs under every Windows account.

If SFC reports that it repaired files but the error remains, the failing executable may be loading a private copy from its own directory. If only one Windows account is affected, test the application under a new user profile. These checks help separate a system-wide Windows problem from an application-specific or per-user problem.

FAQ

Is pngfilt.dll a virus?

No. pngfilt.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with the Internet Explorer PNG image decoder. A copy found in an unusual directory, lacking a valid Microsoft signature, or flagged by antivirus should still be investigated.

Does pngfilt.dll belong to Windows or Internet Explorer?

It is a Windows component historically associated with Internet Explorer and related imaging functionality. Its exact presence and role vary by Windows release.

Which Windows versions contain pngfilt.dll?

Historical records include Internet Explorer and Windows XP-era versions, and documented Windows 10 installations include 32-bit and 64-bit copies. The correct version and location depend on the Windows release, build, architecture, and installed components.

Should I copy the file into both System32 and SysWOW64?

No. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Mixing copies can create architecture and version problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not as a default response. pngfilt.dll is not identified as belonging to those packages. Repair Windows first, then repair the one application if only it is affected.

Should I run regsvr32 pngfilt.dll?

Usually no. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose registration entry points. It is not a general missing-file repair, and modern attempts may return registration errors.

What if the error names a game?

Use the game’s official launcher to verify or repair its files. If that fails, reinstall the game from its official source. Do not copy a downloaded DLL into the game directory.

What is the safest fix?

For multiple affected programs, run DISM followed by SFC, restart, and install pending Windows updates. For one affected program, repair or reinstall that program after checking its architecture and installation files.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
