“The program can’t start because dxupdate.dll is missing from your computer.” If dxupdate.dll was not found or could not be loaded, the error usually involves the legacy Microsoft DirectX setup process rather than a normal Windows graphics runtime.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first matching case:
- A game or older application shows the error during installation or first launch: repair its bundled DirectX prerequisite, then run the official DirectX installer.
- The game launcher reports missing or damaged files: use its Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function.
- The installer extracted files but never completed: open the extracted folder and run
DXSETUP.exe. - Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The error started after Windows corruption, cleanup, or an update: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- The message names
d3dx9_*.dll,xinput1_3.dll,x3daudio1_7.dll, or another DirectX runtime file instead: install the legacy DirectX components, but do not copy individual DLLs. - You downloaded
dxupdate.dllseparately: remove that copy and obtain the complete installer from Microsoft.
What dxupdate.dll actually is
dxupdate.dll is associated with Microsoft’s legacy DirectX Setup and DirectSetup system. It is an installer or update module extracted from dxupdate.cab and used by DXSETUP.exe; it is not normally a standalone DirectX graphics DLL that a game loads directly.

Microsoft’s DirectX setup documentation describes the cabinet files used to build a DirectX redistributable. Microsoft installation logs also show DXWSetup extracting dxupdate.dll from a DirectX cabinet and using the module during setup.
This distinction matters. A dxupdate.dll error can indicate an incomplete download, blocked extraction, corrupted game prerequisite, incompatible installer, or security software quarantine. It does not prove that Windows has simply “lost a system DLL.”

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
Modern Windows includes its core DirectX components, but older games may require optional, side-by-side libraries from the legacy DirectX SDK. Installing DirectX 12 alone does not necessarily install D3DX, XInput 1.3, XAudio 2.7, XACT, or Managed DirectX components.
Fix 1: Install the complete DirectX package
The safest general repair is Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) package. Microsoft lists the offline download as directx_Jun2010_redist.exe, with catalog version 9.29.1974.1. The package installs legacy components alongside the DirectX version already included with Windows; it does not replace or upgrade Windows’ core DirectX version.
- Download the package from Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) Download Center page.
- Save
directx_Jun2010_redist.exeto a local folder. - Right-click the file and select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license terms.
- When asked for an extraction folder, create a short new path such as
C:DirectX2010. - Open File Explorer and browse to
C:DirectX2010. - Double-click
DXSETUP.exe. - Accept the license terms and let setup complete.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Start the affected game or application again.
Running the redistributable executable may only extract the package. It is the subsequent DXSETUP.exe step that performs the installation.

If DXSETUP.exe will not run
Right-click DXSETUP.exe, select Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and try Run this program as an administrator. If the file was downloaded from the internet and Windows displays an Unblock checkbox on the General tab, select it, choose Apply, and run the installer again.
Extract the package to a local drive rather than a network share, removable drive, or deeply nested temporary path. Close the game launcher and other installers while setup runs.
If setup still fails, inspect these files if present:
C:WindowsDXError.logC:WindowsDirectX.log
The logs can show whether extraction, permissions, prerequisite detection, or another component caused the failure.

Because this setup component is commonly delivered with a game or application prerequisite, repairing the program that triggered the error is often more appropriate than changing Windows folders.
Steam, Epic, or another launcher
Open the launcher and locate the affected game in its library. Look for a menu named Verify integrity, Verify files, Repair, or a similar option. The exact wording and location vary by launcher.
After verification completes:
- Start the game once.
- If the error remains, open the game’s installation folder.
- Look for a prerequisite or redist folder containing DirectX setup files.
- Run its
DXSETUP.exeas administrator. - Restart Windows and test the game again.
If verification reports files it cannot repair, uninstall the game, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or trusted launcher. Reinstalling the program remains the definitive fix when its private prerequisite files are damaged.
Do not overwrite the game’s files with a copy from System32 or SysWOW64. A game’s installer may require a particular package layout, cabinet file, and setup sequence.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an installer component. Do not restore a file merely because its name is dxupdate.dll; first verify where it came from.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Review recent actions and expand any item related to the game or DirectX installer.
- If the item came from Microsoft’s official package or the application’s verified installer, confirm its provenance before choosing Allow on device or Restore.
- If the source is unknown, leave it blocked.
- Delete the suspicious download and obtain the complete package again from Microsoft or the application developer.
- Run a full scan from Virus & threat protection before retrying the installation.
The safer response to a quarantine is usually a clean redownload, not manual replacement of the quarantined DLL. Microsoft documents these actions in its Protection history guidance.
Fix 4: Confirm the application architecture
The operating system’s bitness does not determine every application’s DirectX requirement. A 32-bit game running on 64-bit Windows generally needs the 32-bit DirectX components. A native 64-bit program needs its x64 components.
This is one reason copying a DLL from another machine is unreliable. The file may come from a different package, architecture, or setup context.

- Open the application developer’s support page or read the included documentation.
- If the program offers separate x86 and x64 installers, use the one matching the program.
- For an older game, install the complete legacy DirectX redistributable rather than selecting a random DLL.
- If the application is distributed through a launcher, repair its files before replacing prerequisites manually.
Fix 5: Check Windows optional features
Windows Features is not normally where the legacy DirectX package is installed, but checking it can identify a disabled compatibility component.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. - Review the list for a feature specifically required by the affected application.
- Select only a feature recommended by the application’s documentation.
- Select OK and allow Windows to apply the change.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Do not enable unrelated features in the hope that they will restore dxupdate.dll. The official DirectX redistributable and the application’s own prerequisite installer are the relevant repair paths.
Fix 6: Repair Windows component files
Use Windows repair commands when multiple Windows features are failing, system files are damaged, or the DirectX error began after a broader Windows problem. These commands are not a substitute for reinstalling a game’s private DirectX installer.

Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:

- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run the DirectX installer or the game’s repair process again.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component source that SFC may need. The commands and result messages are documented in Microsoft’s System File Checker repair guide.
If repeating DISM and SFC produces no change, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it found, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix for files private to that program.

A graphics driver problem usually produces rendering, initialization, or game-crash symptoms rather than a missing dxupdate.dll message. Still, update drivers if the DirectX installer fails alongside display problems or began failing after a driver cleanup.
Through Windows Update
- Open Start → Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options → Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if available.
- Select the appropriate display or chipset driver.
- Choose Download and install.
- Restart Windows.
Through Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat for relevant chipset or audio devices if the application documentation identifies them.
- Restart Windows and test the installer again.
Do not treat a driver update as a replacement for the DirectX redistributable. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention, while driver installation through the full version is optional; manually checking several hardware vendors remains appropriate when you need maximum control.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 dxupdate.dll
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose COM registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes it as a registration tool, not a general-purpose DLL repair command.
dxupdate.dll is used in the DirectX setup process, so registration is not the normal remedy. If regsvr32 reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, that confirms the command does not apply. Reinstall the complete package instead.
Do not download dxupdate.dll by itself
Random DLL download sites sites create several problems:
- the file may contain malware or tampering;
- it may be from a different DirectX release;
- it may have the wrong architecture;
- it may not match the installer’s cabinet files;
- placing it in a system folder can create a new loading or security problem;
- replacing the file does not repair the failed DirectX setup sequence.
Do not copy dxupdate.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or the application directory as a routine fix. Use Microsoft’s offline DirectX End-User Runtimes package, Microsoft’s web installer, or the application’s own verified prerequisite installer.
Recommended Free Tools
There is also a security reason to be strict about the source. Cisco Talos has reported a condition in which DXSETUP.exe can load an attacker-controlled dxupdate.dll with SYSTEM privileges. Run DirectX setup only from a trusted, verified package and avoid running installers from untrusted writable folders.
If the error continues
Work through this final sequence:
- Remove standalone DLL copies downloaded from untrusted sources.
- Download the official package again.
- Extract it to a short local path such as
C:DirectX2010. - Run
DXSETUP.exeas administrator. - Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Run the game launcher’s file verification.
- Review
DXError.logandDirectX.log. - Check Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application for installer errors.
- Confirm available disk space and permissions.
- Reinstall the affected game or application if its prerequisite files remain damaged.
System Restore is appropriate only if the issue began after a known installation, update, or cleanup event and a suitable restore point exists. It is not the first-line repair for a missing DirectX setup component.
FAQ
Is dxupdate.dll part of Windows?
It is associated with Microsoft DirectX Setup, not a normal Windows system runtime library. Its documented context includes temporary extraction and DirectX WebSetup directories, so it should not be expected to reside permanently in one universal folder.
Does installing DirectX 12 fix it?
Not necessarily. Windows’ current DirectX version does not automatically include every legacy side-by-side component required by older games. Install the official legacy runtime package when the application requires it.
Is dxupdate.dll a 32-bit or 64-bit file?
The setup package supports architecture-specific components. Match the application’s requirement: a 32-bit game generally needs x86 components even on 64-bit Windows.
Can I register it with regsvr32?
No, not as a normal repair. Restore the complete DirectX setup package and run DXSETUP.exe.
How do I know the repair worked?
The installer should complete without an extraction or loading error, and the affected program should launch without the dxupdate.dll message. If a new message names a file such as d3dx9_*.dll or xinput1_3.dll, the setup progressed but another legacy runtime component still needs to be installed.
