The studio’s director and art director have highlighted its varied biomes and secrets, while the game’s director has emphasized that exploring its beauty comes with the danger of zombies and scarce resources.
What is Castor Woods like in Dying Light: The Beast?
Castor Woods is the new open-world location for Dying Light: The Beast. In a September 2024 developer blog, Dying Light Franchise Director Tymon Smektała described it as a “forestry, gloomy, rural valley” filled with secrets and Easter eggs. That is Techland’s description of the setting, not an independently measured account of its geography or size.
Smektała’s full description places the environment alongside the game’s story ambitions: “In terms of scope and feature set expect a fully fledged narrative that will answer some of the most burning, canonical questions from both Dying Light and Dying Light 2 Stay Human, a new open world environment unlike any we did before – set in the forestry, gloomy, rural valley of Castor Woods full of secrets (and easter eggs) to discover.” Techland’s developer blog presents “unlike any we did before” as the studio’s claim; it does not quantify how Castor Woods compares with earlier maps.
What has Techland said about the world’s biomes?
In a June 2025 feature, Techland invited players to explore Castor Woods and introduced Art Director Katarzyna Tarnacka-Polito as a guide to the inspirations behind its diverse biomes. The studio frames the valley as a new open world that differs from the series’ previous locations. The feature establishes that Techland is promoting biome variety, but it does not provide a verified count of biomes or a map-area measurement.

Techland’s Castor Woods feature is the clearest source for the art team’s framing of the landscape. Its descriptions are promotional material: they convey the intended identity of the environment, rather than independent evaluation of how varied or large it is in play.
How does the setting affect survival?
Castor Woods is presented as scenic but hazardous. In a July 2025 interview with Xbox Wire, the developers described it as beautiful yet overrun with zombies instead of tourists. Game Director Nathan Lemaire said ammunition and other resources are scarce, and gunfire can attract enemies. That makes shooting a tactical decision: a weapon may help in a fight, but its noise can draw additional threats.
The result is a deliberate contrast in the developers’ account of the world: open-air exploration and attractive scenery sit alongside a persistent zombie threat and pressure to conserve supplies. These are interviewees’ descriptions of the game’s intended survival atmosphere, not claims about measured difficulty.

Techland says the standalone adventure brings back Kyle Crane and includes a narrative intended to answer canonical questions from both Dying Light and Dying Light 2 Stay Human. The setting is therefore more than a new backdrop in the studio’s pitch: the world and story are presented together as part of Crane’s return and the series’ continuing narrative.

The available descriptions do not establish Castor Woods’s area, population, exact number of biomes, or a quantified size comparison with earlier locations. What they do establish is the intended picture: a forested rural valley, promoted for secrets and diverse environments, where exploration is balanced against zombies and limited resources.
