Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment vs. Fixed Difficulty: What’s the Difference?

Dynamic difficulty adjustment (DDA) changes a game’s challenge as you play; fixed difficulty keeps a preset challenge level in place. The key difference is when and how difficulty is controlled—not whether one approach is automatically easier or more enjoyable. DDA can respond to performance or game context, but the signals and rules vary by design.

How do DDA and fixed difficulty work?

Fixed difficulty

With fixed difficulty, the player or game selects a challenge level in advance, and it stays preset rather than adapting to ongoing performance. Choosing easy, normal, or hard before starting is a familiar example when the game leaves that setting unchanged.

Dynamic difficulty adjustment

DDA changes challenge during play in response to player performance, modeled skill, or game context. It is a broad family of approaches, not one standard feature: different systems can use different signals and pursue different goals. DDA can raise or lower challenge; it does not necessarily make a game easier.

What changes for the player?

Question Fixed difficulty Dynamic difficulty adjustment
When is challenge set? Before play, then held at the preset level. Can change as play unfolds.
What determines challenge? The selected setting or preset. Observed performance, modeled skill, or game context, depending on the system.
How predictable is it? The selected level is intended to remain stable. Challenge can shift; whether the changes are apparent or how they feel to players depends on the design.
How much choice does the player have? The player can choose a stable level when the game offers that choice. Adaptation can tailor challenge, but changes a player did not expect may feel like reduced control.

These are design tendencies, not guarantees about every game. DDA is not synonymous with rubber-banding, cheating, or secretly changing outcomes; those claims require evidence about a specific game.

Is adaptive difficulty better than choosing easy, normal, or hard?

There is no universal winner. A 2024 review in Entertainment Computing describes results on DDA’s effect on player experience as mixed and argues that systems should be designed around specific goals. A system intended to support engagement may not produce the same result on perceived control, enjoyment, or learning. Read the 2024 review.

Individual experiments illustrate why broad claims are risky. In a 2017 comparison, Dennis Ang and Alex Mitchell examined no DDA, system-oriented ramping DDA, and player-oriented DDA. Their abstract reports better overall game experiences when DDA was present. It also reports that the ramping condition had lower self-consciousness and greater transformation of time, but lower perceived control, than the player-oriented condition. Those results describe the systems and measures in that study, not every game that adapts difficulty. Read the 2017 study.

A 2013 experiment with 90 participants compared static difficulty and DDA in an experimental game. Its abstract reports greater enjoyment when difficulty reflected participants’ gaming experience rather than their actual gaming ability. That is a finding from one experiment, not a general rule for players or games. Read the 2013 study.

How should you think about the trade-off?

  • Choose a fixed setting when stability matters. A preset level offers a more predictable challenge when the game keeps it unchanged.
  • Consider DDA when tailoring challenge is the goal. Adaptation may respond to how a session is going, but its value depends on what the system is designed to improve.
  • Separate the design from the outcome. Engagement, enjoyment, perceived control, and learning are different measures; evidence about one does not settle the others.

The 2026 exploratory study of a multiplayer learning environment reports that an unadjusted comparison was statistically significant with a moderate-to-large effect size, but the result did not reach significance after adjustment. It is not proof that either approach generally performs better. Read the 2026 study.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

The cited studies use different systems, settings, participants, and outcome measures. Together they support a distinction between preset and adaptive challenge and show that DDA can affect player experience in different ways. They do not establish a universal effect size, a population-wide rate of DDA use, or a rule that DDA improves every game for every player. Without evidence about a named title, it is not possible to say what signals its system uses or exactly how it changes challenge.
