Dynasty Warriors: Origins trades the series’ huge playable roster for a single protagonist and battles built around battlefield tactics as well as crowd-clearing action. That shift gives the Three Kingdoms conflict a more focused point of view, but it also means longtime fans may miss choosing among dozens of officers—and some campaign stretches can feel repetitive.
What changes in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?
The defining change is that you normally play as one character: Ziluan, also known as the Wanderer. Polygon reviewer Jason Rodriguez described him as a mercenary drawn into the Three Kingdoms conflict. Earlier entries, in the reviewer’s account, had offered more than 90 playable characters; Origins narrows that roster to keep the story centered on one perspective.

Companions are not entirely absent from combat. The review says select allies can be controlled briefly once a gauge fills, but they do not replace Ziluan as the campaign’s regular protagonist. If choosing a favorite historical officer and playing through their battles is a major part of what you enjoy, this is the game’s most consequential departure from older entries.
How does the campaign work?
Opening chapters
The opening follows the Yellow Turban Rebellion and the Anti-Dong Zhuo Coalition. After those early chapters, the story branches according to whether you support Cao, Liu, or Sun, shaping the missions that follow. The campaign reaches the Battle of Chibi.

- Thrilling real-time action Mastering the basics of combat, including block-breaking strong attacks, counters and evasion, is essential. Break enemies' defensive Fortitude by striking weak points and activate an Assault to deal massive damage. Continuous combat fills the Musou Gauge - use this to unleash a powerful Musou Attack.
- Use Tactics to turn the tide of battle Use Tactics to command surrounding allies to perform various actions, such as an advance or cavalry charge, which can trigger Dramatic Success in some situations. Assembling your troops in a Large Force will maintain high morale and they will coordinate their attacks, severely weakening enemy strength. Large Forces can deploy Grand Tactics to dramatically shift the battle with intense group assaults.
- Choose the right weapons and Companions Wield a variety of weapons, from swords and spears to specialised ones like gauntlets and crescent blades. Mastering weapons helps the protagonist reach a new Rank and increase his abilities. Use horses for travel and, for certain battlefields, choose a Companion to fight alongside you. You can switch to a Companion during battle for a limited time, so choose the right moment to control them and unleash their powers.
- A new Three Kingdoms story and world to explore Experience an immersive story through the eyes of the amnesiac protagonist who must identify friends versus foes, heroes who can bring order to the chaos, and enemies to cross blades with. He will traverse a map, vividly representing the grand world of the Three Kingdoms, where large-scale historical battles and additional Missions and Skirmishes can be undertaken. Discover new weapons in towns or encounter officers along the way and deepen bonds with them by completing their requests and challenges.
Routes and replaying missions
Rodriguez reports that missions can be replayed and that some officers’ fates can be changed. That gives the campaign room to revisit key battles and explore different outcomes, though the review does not quantify how much content or how many endings each route adds.
How do the battles feel?
The action still centers on taking on large enemy forces, but the review emphasizes participation in a wider battlefield rather than simply clearing crowds. Rodriguez describes battles involving hundreds or thousands of troops, with grand tactics, allied counter-moves, bodyguard orders, and a range of weapons. Those troop counts are his description of the scale, not a measured unit count.

Fighting enemy generals calls for more than sweeping attacks through groups of soldiers. The review highlights parrying, dodging, special arts, and guard-breaking attacks as important parts of these duels. The result, in the reviewer’s view, is a mix of familiar action and more deliberate decisions about when to press an advantage or respond to an officer.
What does the review praise—and what holds it back?
Why the new direction works
For Rodriguez, concentrating the narrative on the Wanderer makes the conflict feel more personal and gives the player a clearer role in the shifting alliances. The larger battle picture and tactical commands also add ways to affect what is happening beyond the immediate fight.
Where the shift may frustrate
The smaller roster is a real trade-off for veterans who value the series’ breadth of playable officers. The review also reports that portions of the Sun route felt repetitive and that allied officers’ AI could be poor. Those issues temper the stronger sense of scale and involvement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Dynasty Warriors: Origins worth it for fans of older games?
It is a better fit if you are open to following one central protagonist and want battles that combine large-scale action with tactical choices and more involved general duels. It is a less certain fit if your favorite part of older entries was selecting from a vast roster and replaying the story as different officers. The review’s verdict is therefore less about whether Origins is simply more or less Dynasty Warriors, and more about whether its focused story and battlefield changes outweigh the loss of character choice for you.

Platforms and review context
Polygon’s review, attributed to Jason Rodriguez and dated January 13, 2025 by CritIndex, describes a January 17, 2025 release on PS5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. CritIndex also lists Nintendo Switch, but the available sources do not resolve that platform discrepancy. Check the current listing for the platform you intend to play on.
Rodriguez says he spent 35 hours with the game and played a pre-release PC copy supplied by Koei Tecmo. He reports using an Intel i9-10900K, GeForce RTX 3080, and 32 GB of RAM, with the game at highest settings in 4K and stable frame rates. That is his experience on one system, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee of performance on other PCs.
