Did the ESA permanently cancel E3?
The ESA announced that it had decided to end E3. In an emailed statement reported by the Associated Press on December 12, 2023, ESA president and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis said: “After more than two decades of serving as a central showcase for the U.S. and global video game industry, ESA has decided to end E3.” The Associated Press reported the announcement.

So E3 is officially over in the sense that its organizer announced it was ending the event. The ESA newsroom material reviewed through October 8, 2026, contains no announcement that E3 has returned. That is a status update, not a guarantee about what the ESA might decide later.
Is iicon a return of E3?
No. The ESA announced iicon (the Interactive Innovation Conference) as a separate event, not as an E3 revival. It described iicon as an invitation-only conference intended to connect leaders across industries. Its announced dates were April 27–30, 2026, at the Fontainebleau Resort in Las Vegas; those dates have passed. The ESA’s February 2025 announcement describes iicon.

In a December 2025 ticket announcement, the ESA characterized iicon as an executive summit and said it was not open to consumers. It therefore should not be treated as a public gaming expo or a consumer replacement for E3. The ESA’s ticket announcement gives its audience description and dates.

A future revival is possible only if the ESA or another organizer announces one; the closure announcement does not establish that E3 could never return under any circumstances. As of the ESA newsroom material reviewed through October 8, 2026, no such return announcement had appeared. Until one does, the accurate status is that the ESA ended E3 and iicon is a distinct, past-dated event—not evidence of E3’s return.
