Respawn confirmed on April 29, 2025, that it was ending two early-stage incubation projects and making targeted team adjustments across Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi. The studio did not identify both projects or disclose a staff total. The Los Angeles Times later reported about 100 cuts at Respawn, while a separate estimate of 300–400 EA-wide cuts was attributed to Bloomberg and an unnamed person familiar with the cuts—not confirmed by EA.
Why did EA and Respawn make the cuts?
Respawn said the decisions were part of sharpening its focus for the future. In its April 29, 2025 statement, reproduced by GamesBeat, the studio said: “As we sharpen our focus for the future, we’ve made the decision to step away from two early-stage incubation projects and make some target team adjustments across Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi.”
EA spokesperson Justin Higgs described the organizational changes as supporting long-term priorities. Quoted by the Los Angeles Times on May 1, he said: “As part of our continued focus on our long-term strategic priorities, we’ve made select changes within our organization that more effectively aligns teams and allocates resources in service of driving future growth.”
Respawn’s statement also expressed gratitude to affected colleagues: “These decisions are not easy, and we are deeply grateful to every teammate affected,” the studio said, according to the Los Angeles Times. The paper reported that EA was helping affected employees explore internal roles and providing support.

How many people did EA lay off at Respawn?
The Los Angeles Times reported that about 100 jobs were cut at Respawn. It also reported several hundred cuts across EA overall, attributing a 300–400 estimate to Bloomberg, which cited a person familiar with the cuts. EA did not confirm that broader figure as an official company tally.
| Scope | Reported figure | Attribution and status |
|---|---|---|
| Respawn | About 100 jobs | Reported by the Los Angeles Times on May 1, 2025; not presented as an official EA-confirmed count. |

Which Respawn games or projects were canceled?
Respawn publicly confirmed that it was stepping away from two early-stage incubation projects, but its announcement did not name either one. The studio separately said it was making targeted team adjustments across Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi; that wording does not establish that either ongoing franchise was canceled.
Was one of the canceled projects a Titanfall game?
The Los Angeles Times reported Bloomberg’s identification of a canceled Titanfall game that was not close to release. That identification comes from outside reporting, not Respawn’s public announcement. The available reporting does not establish the identity of the second incubation project or provide further production details.

Was the canceled project the Star Wars FPS announced in 2024?
That connection has not been established. On February 28, 2024, EA President Laura Miele said Respawn would “pivot away from early development on a Star Wars FPS Action game” and focus on projects based on EA-owned brands while supporting existing games. EA’s 2024 statement describes that earlier decision; neither it nor Respawn’s April 2025 announcement identifies that Star Wars game as one of the two later incubation cancellations.
The 2024 workforce figure belongs to a separate company announcement, not the April 2025 round. EA CEO Andrew Wilson said on February 28, 2024, that the decisions announced then were expected to affect approximately 5% of EA’s workforce. That was an expected impact of those 2024 changes, not a count of the 2025 cuts. Wilson’s statement is available from EA.
