Neither EA nor the reports disclosed how many people were affected. The cuts came months after EA said Battlefield 6 had the franchise’s biggest opening, but the available reporting does not explain the decision or connect it to the game’s performance.
What happened to Battlefield developers?
On March 9, 2026, MobileSyrup and Game Developer reported layoffs in EA’s Battlefield organization. The reports named DICE, Criterion, Ripple Effect and Motive among the affected studios. EA did not describe the changes as layoffs in its quoted statement; it said it had made “select changes” to align teams with community priorities. MobileSyrup’s report and Game Developer’s report both attributed the organizational update to EA.

EA’s spokesperson told IGN, in a statement reproduced by both outlets: “We’ve made select changes within our Battlefield organization to better align our teams around what matters most to our community. Battlefield remains one of our biggest priorities, and we’re continuing to invest in the franchise, guided by player feedback and insights from Battlefield Labs.”
Were EA Montreal employees affected?
Reports identified Montreal-based Motive as one of the studios affected. EA’s Montreal careers page lists Motive Studios as part of EA Montreal, establishing the location context. It is the layoff reporting—not the careers page—that identifies Motive as affected.

There had also been a prior staffing shift involving Motive and Battlefield. In a Motive studio update, General Manager Patrick Klaus wrote that “a group of developers from Motive are joining the talented teams at Criterion, DICE and Ripple Effect to continue unlocking the full potential of Battlefield.” The update also said Motive continued work on Iron Man. That earlier move provides context for how the studios were working together, but it does not identify who was later affected or explain the March changes. Read Motive’s update.
How many Battlefield developers were laid off?
The number has not been disclosed. MobileSyrup said the total and studio-by-studio figures were unclear; Game Developer also reported an undisclosed number of cuts. The reporting does not name affected employees or specify which roles were eliminated.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why did EA lay off Battlefield developers after Battlefield 6’s record launch?
The stated rationale is organizational alignment, not a detailed explanation of the cuts. EA said it was aligning teams around community priorities and continuing to invest in Battlefield. The company did not identify a business cause, discuss sales as a factor, or explain how the changes affect particular projects.

The timing is notable, but it does not establish a cause. EA’s October 16, 2025 announcement said Battlefield 6 sold more than 7 million copies in its first three days and called the launch “the biggest opening ever in the storied Battlefield franchise.” Those are EA’s own launch figures and characterization, not an independent audit. EA’s announcement also reported more than 172 million online matches and more than 15 million hours watched on streaming services during the three-day launch weekend.

Neither the March reports nor EA’s public statement establishes that the launch’s success caused, should have prevented, or otherwise determined the staffing changes. A strong opening and later layoffs can both be true; the sources do not reveal the reasoning behind EA’s decision.
