EA Play is usually better value if you expect to play several games in its current Play List during your membership. Buying games individually is usually a better fit if you want a few specific titles and want to keep access after your subscription ends. The right choice depends on your platform, region, current prices, and how long you plan to play.
What EA Play includes—and what you keep
EA Play membership provides access to a changing Play List on the platform where you joined, select new-release trials of up to 10 hours, member rewards, and a 10% discount on eligible EA digital purchases. The available games and benefits can vary by country and platform; check the catalog and checkout for your location before deciding. Electronic Arts’ EA Play FAQ describes the membership and its benefits.
Play List access lasts only while your membership entitlement is active. EA says that when you cancel, benefits—including access to the games and trials—end after the current billing cycle. You can play a title again if you separately own it, have another entitlement to it, or rejoin. EA’s cancellation guidance says progress is retained as long as you do not manually delete the save files. EA Play terms explain the access conditions.
A game you buy individually does not depend on an active EA Play membership. Its access remains subject to the purchase terms and service availability of the platform where you bought it.

How the costs compare
EA’s FAQ displays standard EA Play at $5.99 per month or $39.99 per year. Those are the prices shown by EA in US dollars; check your local platform checkout because region, platform, and taxes can affect the amount. Individually purchased games have no single standard price: the cost depends on the title, edition, platform, region, and current sale.

At EA’s displayed US-dollar rates, $39.99 for a year equals about 6.7 monthly payments of $5.99 ($39.99 ÷ $5.99). This is arithmetic from the listed prices, not a separate EA statistic. It does not account for regional pricing or taxes.

How to work out which is better value for you
- Check your platform and local price. EA Play applies to one platform, and the member discount is for the platform where you joined. Compare the price shown at your own checkout with the current prices for the same platform and region.
- Choose a realistic membership period. Compare the monthly fee for the months you expect to play with the annual fee only if you expect to keep using the service for the year.
- Count only games you genuinely plan to play. List the titles you expect to start during that period and check that each is currently in your platform’s Play List. Do not count the entire catalog as savings: it is changing, and a game you never play has no practical value to you.
- Compare against the prices of those exact games. Match platform and edition, and check current sales. No universal break-even number works because individual prices and membership catalogs vary.
- Add trials, rewards, and discounts only if you would use them. Select new-release trials can be up to 10 hours. The 10% discount applies only to eligible purchases and may not beat a sale price.
If you counted only the 10% discount, recovering EA’s displayed $39.99 annual fee would require $399.90 in eligible purchases at full pre-discount prices ($39.99 ÷ 0.10). Recovering one $5.99 monthly fee on the same basis would require $59.90. These are calculations using EA’s displayed US-dollar fee and discount—not a guarantee that all purchases qualify or that the discount is better than another offer. Play List access, trials, and rewards may add value; exclusions, sales, and platform scope may reduce it.
Check platform, region, and discount limits
EA says Play List availability varies by country and platform, and that content benefits may be changed, added, or removed. Membership also requires an internet connection so EA can confirm an active subscription initially and periodically. A game in the catalog today is not guaranteed to remain available for your entire membership period. EA’s terms set out these conditions.

The 10% discount has exclusions. EA’s terms list certain partner titles distributed by EA, game-time codes, and PC subscriptions; they also identify exclusions for backwards-compatible Xbox 360 titles on Xbox. EA says the discount cannot be combined with other offers or prepaid cards unless expressly authorized. Check the terms for your platform and compare the final checkout price.
EA says purchases made with the member discount remain yours after cancellation or expiry. That is distinct from Play List access, which ends with the membership entitlement. Consult EA’s FAQ and terms for the current conditions.

Which option should you choose?
Choose EA Play if
- Several games you want to play are in your current platform’s Play List.
- You can fit those games into the period you will pay for.
- You value access to select trials, member rewards, or eligible discounted purchases.
- You are comfortable losing Play List access when the membership ends.
Buy games individually if
- You mainly want one or a few specific titles.
- You want to continue accessing those purchased games without relying on membership.
- A current sale makes the games you want cheaper than the membership cost for the time you would subscribe.
There is no universally cheaper option without comparing your actual catalog and store prices. If you are unsure, compare the games you will really play—not the number of titles advertised in the subscription—and include only benefits you expect to use.
