EA confirmed on February 28, 2024, that Respawn was pivoting away from early development on a Star Wars first-person action game. EA did not identify it as a Mandalorian game; that identity and the project’s reported gameplay details came from Insider Gaming’s reporting, not an official reveal.
What EA officially confirmed
In a February 28, 2024 statement, Laura Miele, then president of EA Entertainment and Technology, said the company had decided to “pivot away from early development on a Star Wars FPS Action game” and focus Respawn on projects based on EA’s owned brands, while continuing support for existing games.
Miele described the decision as a portfolio choice, not a judgment of the developers: “It’s always hard to walk away from a project, and this decision is not a reflection of the team’s talent, tenacity, or passion they have for the game.” EA said it saw players gravitating toward large open-world games, large communities, and live services, and that Respawn players were most excited about the Jedi series and the studio’s owned brands. Those are EA’s stated considerations; the statement did not give a game-specific financial explanation.
Why the canceled Star Wars FPS was called a Mandalorian game
EA’s January 25, 2022 announcement confirmed that Respawn had begun work on a new Star Wars first-person shooter led by game director Peter Hirschmann. It did not mention the Mandalorian, a bounty hunter, or a title for the project.

On the day EA announced its pivot, Insider Gaming reported that the canceled shooter was a Mandalorian bounty-hunting game, citing sources. That distinction matters: EA confirmed the cancellation of its Star Wars FPS, while the Mandalorian identity remains source-based reporting rather than an EA-confirmed description.
What the game reportedly would have been like
Insider Gaming’s February 29, 2024 follow-up described a first-person game in which players would control a Mandalorian bounty hunter. Its sources reportedly did not believe the character was the specific figure known as “the Mandalorian.” Players would accept bounties and travel to mission locations, rather than explore one continuous open world.

A hub and bounty missions
The reported hub, called “the den,” included the player’s ship, a galactic map, an upgrade station, and an armory. Players would choose a bounty, prepare by selecting weapons and upgrading armor, then head to a mission planet. The levels were described as linear but with larger areas to explore.
Jetpack movement and combat
The outlet’s sources described fast-paced combat built around jetpack movement, including vertical dashes and horizontal boosts, as well as takedowns against stormtroopers and other enemies. Reported encounters included larger threats such as AT-ST walkers. The cancellation-day report also said health would mainly regenerate through successive kills. None of these mechanics was officially shown or confirmed by EA.

How far along was it, and which platforms were reported?
Insider Gaming reported that the project had a fairly polished vertical slice and several completed levels, and that it was in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The same reporting said the game was still some way from release. These are outlet-reported details, not specifications published by EA.
The sources establish no official game title, release date, trailer, or confirmed price. The reported work completed does not mean the game was close to launch.

Why did EA cancel the project?
EA’s public explanation was that it was changing Respawn’s priorities toward Jedi and the studio’s owned brands. The company framed the choice around its view of player interest and the portfolio it wanted to build; it did not publicly name the Mandalorian concept or give a specific reason for canceling that particular project.
Insider Gaming separately reported that sources viewed the game as financially risky. That is the outlet’s reported explanation, not a reason stated by EA. No game-specific public budget, team size, or sales forecast was established in the cited accounts.

Is Star Wars Zero Company the same project?
No. EA announced Star Wars Zero Company on April 19, 2025, as a separate turn-based tactics game set during the Clone Wars. Bit Reactor is developing it in collaboration with Respawn and Lucasfilm Games. EA listed PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with a 2026 release plan.
