EA College Football 25 uses a different option-control default from the hold-to-keep scheme some players expect: leave the controls alone and the quarterback gives the ball; press A on Xbox or X on PlayStation to pull it and keep it. EA does not list in-game control remapping as an option. The reasonable change to ask for is a choice of control schemes—not to assume every player wants the old inputs.
What changed in the option controls?
In EA’s documented scheme, the quarterback starts the handoff unless the player presses the pull/keep button. EA’s gameplay deep dive identifies A on Xbox and X on PlayStation as that button. This reverses the expectation of players accustomed to holding a button to give the ball and releasing it to keep it.

That default is the core of the complaint—not a claim that the game has no option controls. Players asking to switch the give and keep inputs have described wanting the older controls or a way to change them in posts on the EA Forums and Reddit. Those are examples of player requests, not a measurement of how widely the preference is shared.
EA’s documented option inputs

How the RPO distinction works
EA describes RPO behavior as dependent on the play. On a Read/Peek RPO, the quarterback can keep the ball; on an Alert/Glance RPO, that keep option is not available. To throw, press the button corresponding to the intended receiver. The labels and available decisions therefore matter: the A/X pull input is not a universal keep choice for every RPO.

Why EA changed the exchange
EA’s stated rationale was to mirror the quarterback and running back exchange: the quarterback initially places the ball at the back’s belly, then pulls it away if the read key comes down. Design Director Scott O’Gallagher described the input this way: “This is now replicated in the game with the ‘A’ or ‘X’ button functioning as a pull/keep button.”
EA said the pull mechanic was intended to simplify reads and make RPOs more usable. That explains the design goal; it does not establish that the new default feels more intuitive to every player. For someone with muscle memory from earlier games, giving by default can make the same play require a different decision and input timing.

Can you remap the option inputs?
EA’s accessibility resource says remapping options are not present in the game. It offers control schemes for reference, but does not document an in-game legacy preset or a setting to swap give and keep. Open Practice and mini-games are available for practicing the documented controls; they can help build familiarity, but do not change the scheme.
That EA resource does not settle whether a console’s own accessibility or controller settings can alter these inputs on a particular platform, nor does it establish what every later game build supports. There is no basis here to promise that a console-level remap will fix the issue—or to rule it out for every setup.

What the update history does—and does not—show
EA’s August 8, 2024 title update, which EA said went live for all users starting that date, included this fix: “Fixed an issue so a Speed Option Running Back will follow the QB longer.” That is a change to running-back behavior, not an announcement of remappable inputs or a different give/keep default. A note from that update cannot establish the behavior of every later build.
What change would address the complaint?
The most direct fix would be an optional legacy preset or a remappable give/keep input. That would preserve EA’s new default for players who prefer it while giving returning players a way to retain familiar muscle memory. It would also address the specific requests to switch the inputs without treating those requests as proof that one scheme suits everyone.

A useful control choice would make the selected behavior clear and keep the pitch inputs consistent across schemes. This is a design proposal, not a feature EA has announced. Xbox Wire also described the read-option redesign in its College Football 25 feature overview; it does not document a selectable legacy control mode.
