What a custom tactic controls
A custom tactic is a set of connected choices, not a formation code or a single defensive setting. EA describes formation, defensive approach and build-up style as core tactical settings in its FC IQ overview. In FC 26, player roles and focuses add another layer: they describe responsibilities and movements for individuals within the wider team plan.

Think of the pieces as answering different questions. The formation says where players begin; team settings describe the collective approach; roles and focuses shape what individuals are asked to contribute. Those layers influence each other. A formation with several midfielders, for example, gives you different starting options from one with more forwards, but the formation alone does not specify whether those midfielders support the attack, protect the centre, or move into other spaces.

That distinction matters when a tactic feels wrong. If the team is consistently too exposed, changing the formation may help, but the cause could instead be a defensive approach or a role assignment that leaves a space unprotected. If attacks lack support, the issue might be the build-up setting or the responsibilities of players around the ball. Change the layer connected to the problem rather than changing everything at once.

Formation: choose the starting shape
A formation describes how the team is arranged when it is set up: how many players occupy the defensive, midfield and forward lines, and where they start relative to one another. It is a useful first decision because it gives your tactic a basic structure. It is not a guarantee that players will stay in those positions throughout a match.
Start with the players you have and the spaces you want to occupy. Ask whether you want more players available in midfield, more starting options up front, or a shape that gives your defensive line support. Then check whether the players you intend to use can cover the responsibilities the shape creates. A formation is a poor fit if it repeatedly asks your squad to fill jobs for which it has few suitable players.
When deciding between two shapes, compare the spaces they create rather than looking for a supposedly “best” formation. Consider where you expect to build attacks, how many players you want near the ball, and which areas you need protected when possession changes. These are starting assumptions to test in your chosen mode, not proof that a shape will produce a particular result.
Team settings: set the collective approach
Build-up style
Build-up style is a team-level setting: it concerns how the side approaches moving the ball forward. Choose it to support the sort of attacks you want to attempt and the players you have available to carry them out. A setting that suits your preferred pattern may still feel awkward if your squad cannot perform the jobs that pattern needs.

Use the build-up choice alongside the formation, not as a substitute for it. The formation gives you a starting arrangement; the build-up setting helps define the broader team behavior. If you want attacks to develop differently, check both the collective setting and the roles of the players expected to offer support. FC 26’s documented tactical framework keeps these team settings distinct from the player-role layer.
Defensive approach
Defensive approach is the other team-wide lever to consider. It sets the overall defensive behavior, while formation and individual responsibilities determine how that behavior fits your side. A defensive plan needs to be judged as a whole: the starting shape, the approach, and the player responsibilities should not leave a major area of the pitch uncovered.
Make changes based on what you observe. If the team struggles to protect a particular area, ask whether the shape gives you enough players there and whether role assignments support the intended defensive behavior. Avoid assuming that one number or setting works in every mode or with every squad. The official materials describe tactical components and examples, not a universal ranking of settings or guaranteed results.
Player roles and focuses in FC 26
Roles and focuses describe the responsibilities and movements assigned to individual players within a tactic. They are not simply another name for a position: the position is where a player is placed in the formation, while the role layer helps describe the contribution you want from that player. In practice, think about what you need each player to do for the team plan to work.

FC 26’s FC IQ system is designed to be less rigid than a fixed position-to-role mapping. EA says players are less constrained by their roles and can contribute beyond their assigned role. The FC 26 notes also describe new roles and focuses, including Ball-Playing Keeper, Wide Back, Inverted Wingback and Box Crasher, as well as a Versatile focus. Those names identify documented options; they are not a reason to assign them automatically. Choose a role and focus because the responsibility fits the player and the way you want the team to function.
When assigning roles, reason from the team’s needs. If one player is expected to protect the centre, look at how the nearby players’ jobs complement that responsibility. If you want a player to support attacks, consider who will cover the space they leave. When several players are given responsibilities that pull them toward the same area, other spaces may lack support. The useful question is not only “What role can this player play?” but “What does this assignment make the rest of the team responsible for?”
- Begin with the team plan: decide what each line needs to contribute before choosing individual responsibilities.
- Fit the role to the player: consider whether the player can carry out the job you have in mind.
- Check the spaces left behind: an attacking contribution can create a defensive or support responsibility elsewhere.
- Adjust one or two assignments at a time: that makes it easier to connect a change with what you see in matches.
These are decision principles, not claims that a particular role produces a particular outcome. EA’s explanation of greater role flexibility means a player’s contribution need not be limited to the label assigned, so assess how the full setup behaves rather than treating the role name as a rigid script.
A practical method for building a tactic
- Pick the mode and intended play pattern. Decide where you will use the tactic and what you want the team to attempt. Career Mode has its own Tactical Vision rules; do not assume those requirements apply to other modes.
- Choose a formation that suits your squad. Set the initial distribution of defenders, midfielders and forwards around the players you expect to use. Think about the spaces you need to occupy and the players available to cover them.
- Set the team-wide approach. Choose a build-up style and defensive approach that express your intended collective behavior. Keep the formation in view: the same team settings can feel different when starting shapes change.
- Assign roles and focuses to solve specific jobs. Identify what each line needs, then set individual responsibilities to support those needs. Check who covers a space when another player contributes elsewhere.
- Play and observe before making broad changes. Look for a specific recurring problem, such as a lack of support in an area or a space that is difficult to protect. Change the setting most closely connected to that problem and see whether the behavior improves.
- Save a useful version. If you are trying different approaches, keep a separate saved code where available so you can return to a setup you want to keep.
Menu wording and paths may differ between modes, platforms or game builds. Use the current in-game tactics screens for the available settings rather than relying on a button-by-button path that may not match your version.

Worked example: Emre Yilmaz’s narrow diamond
EA FC Pro published a narrow-diamond setup attributed to Emre Yilmaz on November 9, 2023. Its listed settings are a defensive width of 40, depth of 71, balanced build-up, direct passing and attacking width of 1. The accompanying player instructions say the CDM stays back and covers the centre, one central midfielder stays back, the CAM stays forward, and both strikers get in behind. EA presents the compact attacking width as supporting close combinations and the depth as intended to support a high press. See EA’s “Play like Emre Yilmaz” article for the original example.

This is a historical example, not a tested FC 26 recommendation. It shows how a shape, team settings and individual instructions can be combined into a coherent idea; it does not establish that those values are optimal now, suit every squad, or produce the same behavior in every mode. Use the logic as a prompt: decide what spaces you want to use, which players should protect them, and how your team should approach attacks.

Career Mode Tactical Vision rules are not a general custom-tactics requirement for every mode. EA’s FC 26 Career Mode deep dive says the requirements have been relaxed. The remaining requirements it lists concern build-up choices for some visions and defensive approaches for others. It also states that player roles are no longer Tactical Vision requirements, although coaches familiar with a vision can improve Role Familiarity.

EA’s deep dive does not specify the exact required build-up or defensive-approach selection for each row in the material summarized here, so use the in-game Career Mode interface for the current precise choices. The safe distinction is that Tactical Vision constrains certain team settings in Career Mode, while roles are no longer prerequisites. Competitive and Authentic gameplay presets
FC 26 distinguishes Competitive and Authentic gameplay presets. EA describes Competitive as tuned for head-to-head play, including Ultimate Team and Clubs, and Authentic as aimed at modes such as Career. This context can inform where you test a tactic, but it does not establish that any particular formation, role or setting is best for either preset. When comparing two setups, compare them in the mode where you intend to use them. A result observed in one context should not automatically be treated as proof about another. Keep your comparison focused on the starting shape, team settings, player responsibilities, squad fit and mode rather than treating a code or a preset label as a performance guarantee.
Save, share and reuse tactics codes
EA says FC 25 tactics codes are compatible with FC 26 and are converted to the FC 26 format when applied. The FC 26 notes describe saving and loading codes across Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Kick-Off, Seasons and Friendlies, with up to 10 saved codes. These features make codes useful for carrying a setup between supported modes or keeping alternatives while you experiment; they do not mean a tactic will behave identically with different squads or mode settings. When trying a shared code, treat it as a starting point. Check whether the formation suits your available players, whether its roles fit their abilities, and whether its team settings match the way you want to play. If something feels off, adjust the relevant layer rather than assuming the code itself is universally effective. Keep a saved version before changing it if you want a reliable way back.
How to judge whether a tactic fits
There is no evidence in the cited official material establishing a universal ranking of custom tactics or a guaranteed performance benefit for a specific setting. A sensible evaluation is therefore about fit: does the tactic create the starting shape you want, give players useful responsibilities, and support the play pattern you chose in the mode where you play?
- Shape: Are the starting lines and spacing suited to your intended use of the pitch?
- Team behavior: Do build-up and defensive settings support the collective approach you want?
- Role fit: Do the individual responsibilities suit the players you intend to use?
- Coverage: When a player contributes to one area, is another player responsible for the space that opens?
- Mode: Are you accounting for Career Mode’s Tactical Vision rules or the gameplay context in which you will use the setup?
Change a tactic in response to an identifiable issue, not because a formation or code is presented as “best.” Compare one version with another under the same mode and squad conditions where possible. That gives you a more useful answer about fit than a claim that a particular tactic is universally strongest.
