How to Build a Mega Sableye Team in Pokémon GO

Mega Sableye is a raid-support option for Dark- and Ghost-type allies, while Fairy attackers are the priority when you face it as a raid boss. PvP use depends on special event-cup rules.

First choose the battle format: Mega Sableye is not eligible for ordinary GO Battle League battles. It can be used in raids and friend battles, and it can appear in GO Battle League only when a special event cup allows Mega-Evolved Pokémon. That means there is no single lineup that works for every “Mega Sableye team”: a team for using Mega Sableye as raid support is different from a team built to defeat it as a raid boss.

This guide covers both raid roles, explains what to check for a special-cup PvP team, and separates confirmed battle rules from choices that depend on your Pokémon and the current event. If you are asking, “What Pokémon are good with Mega Sableye?”, the short answer is Dark- and Ghost-type attackers when their damage suits the raid boss. If you are facing Mega Sableye, prioritize Fairy damage.

Choose the format before you choose your team

Mega Sableye is Dark/Ghost-type. Its only listed weakness in the Pokémon GO Hub matchup chart is Fairy, which deals 160% damage; the chart also lists strong resistance to Normal and Psychic attacks. Those matchups matter differently depending on whether Mega Sableye is on your side or across the raid arena.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction is the first team-building decision. In one raid scenario, you may Mega Evolve Sableye because its boost supports allied Dark- and Ghost-type attackers. In another, Mega Sableye is the raid boss, and your job is to bring attackers that exploit its Fairy weakness. For PvP, do not assume either raid lineup will work: eligibility depends on the rules of the active cup.

What you want to do How Mega Sableye fits Team-building priority
Use Mega Sableye in a raid Support for allied Dark- and Ghost-type attackers; it is not ranked as a raid attacker in the database analysis. Bring it when its boost benefits the rest of your party, then fill the other slots with useful damage dealers.
Defeat Mega Sableye as a raid boss Your opponent is weak to Fairy damage. Prioritize strong Fairy attackers, weighing their moves, levels, and survivability.
Use it in PvP Only in a special GO Battle League event cup that admits Mega-Evolved Pokémon, or in a friend battle. Check the live cup rules before committing a lineup; ordinary GO Battle League eligibility does not apply.

Official rules can change by battle format and event. The Pokémon GO Help Center’s Mega battle-use rules explain where Mega Pokémon are allowed. In raids and Gym battles, Mega attack boosts can help eligible allies; Mega Pokémon cannot be left to defend a Gym.

What the matchup chart means for your choices

The 160% figure is a comparison of Fairy damage with the chart’s baseline, not a promise that every Fairy Pokémon will outperform every other option in every raid. Move typing, Pokémon level, and how long an attacker stays in the battle all matter. Use the weakness as a priority when comparing the Pokémon you actually have, rather than treating the type label alone as a complete team recommendation.

The listed resistance to Normal and Psychic is also useful context, especially when Mega Sableye is the opponent. It is not a reason to bring one particular counter by itself; the counter guide’s advice is to prioritize Fairy attackers. When Mega Sableye is your own Mega, its raid niche is instead supporting Dark and Ghost damage, notably against Psychic raid bosses.

Build a raid party that uses Mega Sableye as support

Mega Sableye’s raid value is its team boost, not a top-ranked personal damage contribution. The Pokémon GO Hub database describes its niche as boosting allied Dark- and Ghost-type Pokémon, making it a possible support choice against Psychic raid bosses. The database recommends Shadow Claw and Foul Play for Mega Sableye.

Think of the choice as a tradeoff between supporting the party and dealing more direct damage yourself. The database does not rank Mega Sableye as a raid attacker, so it is not a default pick simply because it is Mega-Evolved. Its value depends on whether the other attackers in the group can make use of the boost and whether that party plan fits the boss you are fighting.

Decide whether the boost is worth the slot

Before adding it, look at the attackers your group will actually use. If several teammates are bringing Dark- or Ghost-type damage against a Psychic boss, Mega Sableye can support that plan. If your party relies on other types, or you need every slot to contribute direct damage, a stronger direct attacker may be the better choice. The database does not rank Mega Sableye as a raid attacker, so do not choose it on the assumption that it will lead your damage output.

Ask two practical questions before you Mega Evolve Sableye. First, will the raid boss’s matchup make Dark- or Ghost-type attacks useful? Second, will enough of the party’s attackers use those types for the support role to matter? If the answer to either is no, the opportunity cost is important: you are choosing a support Mega rather than a direct attacker. The right answer can differ between raids because the boss and your group’s available Pokémon differ.

Coordinate with your group where possible. One player’s Mega choice may shape which damage types are supported, while other players choose their own attackers. Do not assume that every teammate has the same roster or that a Mega Sableye boost will improve every Pokémon in the party. Build around the attackers people can bring and the raid boss’s actual matchup.

Set up the rest of the party around the raid boss

  1. Check the boss’s type and weaknesses. Make sure the group’s main attackers can deal effective damage to that specific raid boss. Mega Sableye’s support niche is not a general-purpose bonus for every matchup.
  2. Match attacker types to its support role. Dark- and Ghost-type attackers are the allies the database identifies as benefiting from Mega Sableye’s boost. Against a Psychic raid boss, those types can fit the same offensive plan.
  3. Compare your actual options. Consider each Pokémon’s moves, level, and ability to stay in the fight rather than selecting only by species or type. A party made from available, appropriately prepared attackers is more useful than an idealized list you cannot field.
  4. Check the party’s Mega choice. Only one Mega-Evolved Pokémon can be active for a Trainer at a time. If you are choosing Mega Sableye, you cannot also have a second Mega-Evolved Pokémon active on that Trainer’s team.
  5. Review the moves before the battle. The recommended set in the database is Shadow Claw and Foul Play. Mega Evolution itself will not change Sableye’s Fast or Charged Attacks, so confirm its current moves rather than expecting the transformation to fix a move choice.

Mega Evolution does not replace the Pokémon’s existing Fast or Charged Attacks. The Pokémon GO Help Center states: “Also, a Pokémon’s Fast and Charged Attacks don’t change when they’re Mega-Evolved.” Check that Sableye already has the moves you want before Mega Evolving it; Mega Evolution itself is not a way to change its moves.

When to choose another Mega or attacker

Choose another option when the rest of the party will not benefit from Mega Sableye’s Dark- and Ghost-type support, or when a direct attacker better fits the raid plan. This is not a claim that Mega Sableye has no raid use: its niche is support for those allies. It is a reminder to match the Mega to the fight instead of treating Mega Evolution as an automatic improvement to personal damage.

There is no universal replacement lineup established here. The raid boss, available attackers, levels, and moves all affect the choice. Compare what your group can field and use the Mega whose role best supports that matchup.

Build a team to beat Mega Sableye in a raid

If Mega Sableye is the raid boss, build around its Fairy weakness. Pokémon GO Hub’s Mega Sableye raid counter guide recommends Fairy attackers and includes Mega Gardevoir among its Mega choices. Use the Fairy attackers you have available, then compare their move typing, levels, and survivability; a species name alone does not guarantee an effective party.

Fairy is the key offensive direction because the matchup chart lists it as Mega Sableye’s only weakness, at 160% damage. The counter guide’s inclusion of Mega Gardevoir gives you a named Mega choice to consider, but it is not a guarantee that Mega Gardevoir is available to every player or the best fit for every group. Compare it with the other Fairy attackers in your roster and account for what your teammates can bring.

Make the counter choice with your roster in mind

  • Prioritize Fairy damage. Fairy is the weakness identified in the matchup chart, with damage listed at 160%.
  • Check the moves, not just the Pokémon’s type. A Fairy attacker is most useful when its attacks contribute the Fairy damage your plan depends on. Do not select by species name alone.
  • Account for level and staying power. The counter guide’s estimate assumes strong, high-level Pokémon. A lower-level group or one that loses attackers quickly may need more trainers or a different party.
  • Coordinate Mega support. If someone in the group brings a Mega Pokémon that can benefit the party’s damage plan, account for that choice. The counter guide names Mega Gardevoir among its recommended Mega choices; the best party still depends on the trainers’ available Pokémon.
  • Adjust for the whole group. A counter list is a starting point, not a fixed six-Pokémon prescription. Look at the attackers and levels each trainer can contribute, then choose a party that can maintain useful damage.

The counter guide, dated September 3, 2026, estimates that around two to five trainers with strong, high-level Pokémon can defeat Mega Sableye. Treat that as a guide estimate, not a guarantee: actual difficulty depends on roster strength and execution. A group with less-developed Pokémon should not assume the same trainer count will be sufficient.

If you are deciding whether to join with the team you have, the useful comparison is not just the number of trainers. Consider whether your party can consistently deliver Fairy damage, how strong those attackers are, and whether they can remain in the fight. The guide’s two-to-five estimate is a broad reference for strong, high-level teams rather than a promise for every lobby.

Raid counter checklist

  1. Confirm that Mega Sableye is the current raid boss. Raid listings rotate, so check the in-game raid information rather than preparing from an old lineup.
  2. Choose Fairy attackers you can field. Prioritize their Fairy moves and compare levels and survivability.
  3. Coordinate the Mega slot. The guide includes Mega Gardevoir among recommended Mega choices. Decide who is bringing a Mega and consider how that fits the party’s damage plan.
  4. Be realistic about the trainer estimate. Use the guide’s two-to-five range only as an estimate for strong, high-level Pokémon; roster and execution affect the result.

Use Mega Sableye in PvP only when the cup permits it

Mega-Evolved Pokémon cannot be used in ordinary GO Battle League matches. The exception is a special event cup that permits them. The permitted species, CP limit, and other eligibility rules depend on the cup, so confirm them in the in-game event details before building a team. A Sableye lineup intended for one cup should not be assumed to qualify for another.

The available rules establish Mega Sableye’s limited eligibility, but they do not establish a current cup or a simulation-backed three-Pokémon lineup. For an event cup, start by checking whether Mega Evolution is allowed, then confirm the cup’s CP and species restrictions. After that, choose the other two Pokémon to cover the threats and weaknesses you expect in that specific cup; do not treat a raid-support lineup as a PvP recommendation.

For a practical event-cup process, first read the cup’s rules in the game and confirm that Mega-Evolved Pokémon are eligible at all. Next, check the CP cap and species restrictions for that specific event. Only then consider whether your Mega Sableye and its current moves meet the requirements. Finally, select the other two Pokémon for the format’s likely matchups and the gaps in your own team. These are checks to make, not a ready-made lineup: the cup rules and available opponents can change.

There is no reason to invest in a PvP lineup on the assumption that Mega Sableye will be accepted in ordinary GO Battle League. The official exception is limited to special event cups that allow Mega Pokémon. If the active cup does not explicitly permit them, use a lineup of eligible Pokémon instead.

In friend battles, confirm the battle’s rules with your opponent. That is a separate format from ordinary GO Battle League eligibility, and the GO Battle League restriction should not be mistaken for a blanket ban on using Mega Sableye in every battle.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Check these rules before finalizing the lineup

  • One active Mega per Trainer: you can have only one Mega-Evolved Pokémon active at a time.
  • Mega Evolution keeps the current attacks: it does not replace Fast or Charged Attacks, so check the moves you want beforehand.
  • Battle eligibility is format-specific: ordinary GO Battle League excludes Mega Pokémon; special event cups may allow them.
  • Gym use has limits: Mega attack boosts apply in Gym battles, but a Mega Pokémon cannot be assigned to defend a Gym.
  • Live events can change the practical answer: check the current in-game cup and raid listing before choosing a team.

These mechanics are described in the official Pokémon GO Help Center article on Mega Evolution and its rules for using Mega-Evolved Pokémon in battle.

These limits are easy to confuse because “can Mega Evolve” and “can use it in this battle” are separate questions. Mega Evolution preserves Sableye’s attacks, but it does not override a cup’s eligibility rules. Similarly, a raid-support role does not make Mega Sableye a top-ranked damage dealer, and a type weakness does not mean every Pokémon of that type is an equally strong counter.

Quick team-building decision

  1. Using Mega Sableye in a raid? Consider it when Dark- and Ghost-type allies can benefit from its support, especially against a Psychic boss; otherwise, prioritize a stronger direct attacker.
  2. Fighting Mega Sableye? Lead your planning with Fairy attackers, then adjust for your group’s actual levels, moves, and survivability.
  3. Planning PvP? Verify that the active special cup allows Mega Pokémon and check its exact restrictions before settling on a lineup.

Keep the team choice tied to the role: support Mega Sableye is for a party using Dark and Ghost attackers; raid-counter teams should emphasize Fairy damage; event-cup PvP teams must satisfy the live cup rules. Those are three different jobs, so make the format decision before choosing Pokémon.

How many trainers does it take to beat Mega Sableye?

Pokémon GO Hub’s raid counter guide, dated September 3, 2026, estimates around two to five trainers with strong, high-level Pokémon. That is an estimate, not a guarantee; roster strength and execution affect the difficulty.

Does Mega Evolution change Sableye’s moves?

No. The Pokémon GO Help Center says a Pokémon’s Fast and Charged Attacks do not change when it is Mega-Evolved. Check Sableye’s current moves before Mega Evolving it.

The Bottom Line

Choose the battle format first. Use Mega Sableye as raid support when Dark- and Ghost-type allies can benefit, especially against a Psychic boss; choose Fairy attackers when fighting it as a raid boss; and use it in GO Battle League only if a special event cup permits Mega Pokémon. Compare actual moves, levels, and survivability, and check current in-game rules rather than relying on a universal lineup.
