EA Is Cracking Down on Battlefield 6 Portal XP Farms—but Not All Custom Maps

EA acknowledged that XP-farming servers were crowding Battlefield 6 Portal and announced backend changes. Here’s what’s known—and how to check XP rewards before joining an experience.

EA has acknowledged that XP-farming servers were taking up Battlefield 6 Portal capacity and announced backend changes to curb the behavior. That is not the same as banning custom maps or every experience that uses bots: the stated aim is to make room for more player-filled experiences, while progression still depends on whether a Portal experience is Verified or Custom. Check its in-game XP label and rewards before joining.

Why EA is changing Portal servers

EA said community servers had reached maximum capacity, with many experiences primarily set up to earn XP, inflate stats, or gain accolades by defeating bots. The result, EA said, was that players found it harder to create and discover experiences for active play.

In its Community Update, EA’s Battlefield team wrote: “With so many servers focused on farming XP rather than active play, it’s become noticeably harder for players to create and find experiences to play with other people.” EA said it was developing backend adjustments to reduce the number of XP farms taking server space and that experiences might need to be republished after backend maintenance.

In a follow-up post, EA said it was deploying backend updates intended to improve community experiences and encourage more player-filled servers. The changes addressed unintended behaviors that enabled XP farming or unbalanced gameplay. The post did not specify the enforcement thresholds or quantify the effect.

What the crackdown does—and does not—establish

EA’s announcements describe an effort to curb XP-farming behavior and ease pressure on community-server capacity. They do not establish that every XP-farm map was removed, that all bot-filled experiences are prohibited, or that custom maps as a category are banned. EA has not provided a public count of affected servers or a precise current rule for how much bot use or XP farming triggers action.

EA also said some experiences could require republication after backend maintenance. That is a possible consequence of the backend changes, not proof that a particular map was deleted for farming XP.

Verified and Custom experiences award progression differently

Portal progression depends on the experience type. EA’s FAQ says Verified Community Experiences award the same categories of EXP as official modes, including challenges, badges, and accolades. Custom Community Experiences award Time Played EXP. EA says the experience menu description identifies the progression rewards available.

EA’s Portal guide adds that Verified experiences award listed categories at the same amounts as normal Multiplayer. Custom experiences award a Career XP match-completion amount rather than standard Career XP, Hardware XP, and mission or assignment progress, and carry a “Modified XP” label. Because those published details date to 2025 and rules can change, use the current in-game description as the deciding reference rather than assuming a particular experience has a specific XP rate.

Experience type Progression described by EA Creator flexibility
Verified Same listed progression categories and amounts as normal Multiplayer, including challenges, badges, and accolades, according to EA’s FAQ and guide. Existing official modes; custom gameplay scripting and level edits are not allowed.
Custom Time Played EXP in EA’s FAQ; the guide describes a Career XP match-completion amount and a “Modified XP” label, rather than standard Career XP, Hardware XP, and mission or assignment progress. Custom gameplay logic and level editing are allowed.

The comparison reflects EA’s published guidance; the in-game description is the useful check for the rewards attached to an individual live experience.

How to check an experience before joining

  1. Open the Portal browser from the game’s Community section.
  2. Search or browse by experience name, mode, map, tags, or experience code, as described in EA’s FAQ.
  3. Open the experience’s menu description and inspect its progression rewards and XP label. Look for “Modified XP” on Custom experiences.
  4. Choose based on the rewards shown there, not on a map title or a claim that the experience is an XP farm.

EA’s published guidance does not establish an exact current XP rate for an individual experience. The displayed rewards are therefore more useful than assuming every Portal match pays the same amount.

What creators can change

EA’s creator guide distinguishes the modes by how much they can be altered. Verified modes are built from existing official modes, prohibit custom gameplay scripting and level edits, and offer full progression under EA’s guide. Custom experiences permit broader gameplay logic and map editing, but have Modified XP.

The guide also covers bots, rotations, modifiers, validation, and moderation states. A bot-enabled experience alone does not demonstrate that it is an XP farm or that it violates a published rule. Creators can publish through Portal Builder, test with friends, and check validation and moderation status; the rules EA describes for Verified and Custom determine the relevant trade-off between flexibility and progression.

A separate reported moderation incident is not XP-farm enforcement

TechRadar separately reported that EA removed or shut down a Portal recreation of Shipment from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), and that the creator was warned of possible temporary or permanent bans if the behavior was repeated. The report attributed the warning to an “inappropriate reference” and said EA had not made an official statement at the time (TechRadar’s report).

That reported incident concerns an imitation map, not XP-farm servers. It should not be treated as EA’s explanation for the backend changes or as evidence of a general rule about XP-farming enforcement.
