EA announced Battlefield REDSEC on October 28, 2025, as a free-to-play Battlefield experience launching alongside Battlefield 6 Season 1. You do not need to own Battlefield 6 to play REDSEC. Its launch package included Battle Royale, the squad competition mode Gauntlet, and Portal creation tools.
What is Battlefield REDSEC?
REDSEC is the name EA gave its free-to-play Battlefield experience. EA described it as a new destination built around Battlefield gameplay, with a standalone Battle Royale offering and other modes and tools. It is separate from the paid Battlefield 6 experience: EA said players could join REDSEC without buying Battlefield 6.
EA’s October 28, 2025 launch announcement introduced REDSEC alongside Battlefield 6 Season 1. EA Help’s current REDSEC guide lists Battle Royale, Ranked, and Portal among the available features; the available modes may change over time.
Which modes and features did REDSEC include?
Battle Royale
At launch, EA described Battle Royale as a 100-player match in which players loot, fight opposing squads, and use tactical destruction. The launch formats were 25 four-player squads or 50 duos. These are launch descriptions, not a guarantee that every current playlist uses those player counts or team sizes.

Gauntlet
Gauntlet was announced as an elimination competition. EA’s launch materials described eight teams of four completing round-based missions in five-minute windows. The Battlefield Team’s community update further described four randomized missions per match, with low-scoring squads eliminated between missions.
Portal
Portal gives players tools to create or find custom REDSEC experiences using the Fort Lyndon playspace. EA included Portal in REDSEC’s free-to-play launch package.

Can you play REDSEC without buying Battlefield 6?
Yes. EA said Battlefield 6 ownership is not required to play REDSEC. You can download REDSEC separately through the supported PC and console storefronts listed by EA Help.

Platform account or subscription requirements may apply, depending on platform and region. EA also notes that REDSEC includes optional in-game purchases. EA says REDSEC players can play alongside Battlefield 6 players across supported platforms and REDSEC modes.
