How to Protect Your Gaming Gear and Personal Data at an Expo

Secure your devices before travel, keep bags and gaming gear close, use cellular data for sensitive tasks, and check your expo’s current rules before packing.

Protect your gear and accounts at a gaming expo by bringing only what you need, securing devices before you travel, keeping bags and electronics close, and treating open public Wi-Fi as untrusted for sensitive activity. Check the specific organizer’s current rules before packing: bag limits, searches, storage, and prohibited items vary by event and venue.

Before you leave: check rules and secure your devices

  1. Read the event’s current attendee and prohibited-item policies. Check bag dimensions, search procedures, storage and re-entry rules, and restrictions on gaming equipment or cosplay props. A convention center and an event held in a public shopping center may have different requirements. CES, for example, publishes event-specific bag limits and screening rules; those do not apply to every expo. See CES safety and security guidance and GameACon’s rules for examples of how policies differ.
  2. Pack only the gear you plan to use. Keep loose essentials together and, where appropriate, place a contact label inside belongings. Gen Con recommends identification tags with a mobile phone number to help return recovered property. Read Gen Con’s policies and show information.
  3. Prepare each device and account. Update your phone, handheld, laptop, and relevant apps. Set a strong device passcode, enable encryption if available, and turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) for important accounts such as email and gaming services. Confirm that your account recovery methods work. The FTC also recommends keeping software updated and using strong passwords and MFA. FTC cybersecurity guidance.
  4. Turn off automatic public Wi-Fi connections if your device offers that setting. This helps prevent it from joining an unfamiliar network without you choosing to connect.
  5. Know your recovery options. Make sure you can find your device’s location and remote-lock features, and save the event’s official contact method. These preparations can help you respond if something goes missing; they do not guarantee that a device can be recovered.

At the expo: keep gear close and use networks carefully

Keep devices and bags with you

Keep your gaming gear and bag in sight, and do not leave a device charging unattended while you step away. In crowded seating, hold your bag close or keep it in your lap. GDC’s attendee guidance recommends carrying shoulder bags under the arm and keeping bags in your lap while seated; check your own event’s instructions for its specific advice. GDC health and safety guidance.

Follow staff directions and use only storage or bag-check services the event permits. Do not assume a locker or cloakroom is available or suitable for valuable electronics. Venue screening and storage arrangements are planned around each venue’s operations, not a promise of secure storage for attendees. CISA’s public venue screening guide addresses venue-side screening and storage planning.

Limit sensitive activity on open Wi-Fi

Avoid logging in to sensitive accounts, banking, or shopping over open expo Wi-Fi. CISA advises against using open Wi-Fi for personal business, banking, or online shopping; if a sensitive task cannot wait, use cellular data where practical. This is a precaution, not a claim that every user on public Wi-Fi will have their traffic exposed. CISA’s travel-device guidance.

Protect account access and your badge

Do not share passwords, one-time verification codes, or account-recovery links with someone who asks for them. MFA and unique passwords help protect accounts, but a code or recovery link can still grant access if you hand it over. If the organizer advises attendees to put away badges when leaving the venue, follow that guidance; GDC includes that instruction for its event.

If something is lost or stolen

  1. Contact event staff promptly. Ask security or the event office how to report the loss and use its lost-and-found process. Gen Con, for example, identifies its Show Office as the convention’s lost-and-found center; other events may use a different contact.
  2. For a missing payment card, contact the issuer immediately. Ask the bank or card company to secure the account and follow the reporting steps that apply where you are. Event-specific contacts, such as those listed for GDC in San Francisco, are not universal reporting channels. GDC health and safety guidance.
  3. For a missing phone or computer, use a trusted device to act. Use the manufacturer’s official location or remote-lock feature, then change important account passwords and revoke active sessions where possible. CISA recommends changing associated passwords from a different computer you control after a device is lost or compromised. CISA’s travel-device guidance.

Choose a bag for the event, not just for convenience

A compact crossbody bag can make it easier to keep essentials close, but no bag design makes belongings theft-proof. Check the event’s size limits and screening rules before buying or packing a bag, and carry only what you need. CES’s published guidance illustrates why it is important to verify the named event’s current policy rather than assume one expo’s rules apply elsewhere.
