On February 27, 2025, EA released source code for four Command & Conquer game entries: Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert, Renegade and Generals. The Zero Hour expansion is included with Generals, not a fifth standalone entry. EA says the code is released under GPL licensing, but the release is not the same as a free, ready-to-play game or permission to reuse the franchise’s art and other assets.
Which Command & Conquer games did EA release source code for?
EA’s February 27, 2025 announcement names four entries: Command & Conquer (also known as Tiberian Dawn), Red Alert, Renegade and Generals. The Zero Hour expansion is covered under Generals; it is not a fifth standalone game in the list. EA linked to four Electronic Arts repositories in its announcement.
Luke “CCHyper” Feenan, whom EA identifies as a long-time C&C modder and CnCNet administrator, wrote: “So, I’m proud to announce that we are releasing the fully recovered source code for Command & Conquer (aka, Tiberian Dawn) and C&C Red Alert under the GPL license!” EA says Feenan worked with its teams to restore source archives to buildable states.
Does the source code let you play the games for free?
No. A source-code repository is material for studying or modifying a game’s code, not necessarily a compiled game that can be launched. The Tiberian Dawn repository specifically describes its release as a preservation effort: its current source does not fully compile, it lacks core engine libraries that the repository says are in the Red Alert repository, and restoration work is required. It also lists legacy tools and dependencies, including Watcom C/C++ 10.6, Borland Turbo Assembler 4.0 and Microsoft Macro Assembler 6.11d.

That repository says users must own the game to use compiled binaries and points to the C&C Ultimate Collection on EA App or Steam. The source release should therefore not be treated as a free game download or as evidence that every title is straightforward to build today. The repository’s status and instructions may differ by game.
What does “GPL” cover—and what remains EA’s property?
EA describes the released source code as GPL-licensed. The Tiberian Dawn repository specifies GPL v3 with additional terms, so consult the license in the particular repository for the conditions that apply to that code. EA’s Franchise Modding Guidelines say C&C code, art, music and other assets remain EA’s intellectual property; the guidelines also note that they supplement applicable rules, including GPL terms for source code distributed by EA.

In practical terms, the code release does not make the games’ artwork, music, trademarks or other assets public domain or unrestricted. Whether a specific use is allowed depends on the applicable license and EA’s guidelines.

EA’s post announced several separate modding changes. Source code offers access to game code subject to its license and build requirements. Steam Workshop support gives players a way to subscribe to user-created maps; EA said subscribed maps would download at the game’s next launch and appear in map-selection menus.

EA said Workshop support had gone live for Renegade; Generals and Zero Hour; Tiberium Wars and Kane’s Wrath; Red Alert 3 and Uprising; and Tiberian Twilight. These Workshop-supported titles are a separate list from the four entries whose source code was announced.
The same post also announced a “C&C Modding Support” pack with source XML, schema, script, shader and map files for games using the SAGE engine. Those modding files and the Workshop feature are not the four source-code releases.
