Electronic Arts announced that Battlefield 6 sold more than 7 million copies in its first three days, calling it the biggest launch in franchise history. In March 2026, layoffs were reported across teams at four Battlefield studios. EA described the cuts as a realignment, but the number of employees affected was not disclosed—and the available reporting does not establish that the game’s sales caused or should have prevented the layoffs.
What happened at the Battlefield studios?
On March 9, 2026, Game Informer reported, citing IGN’s Rebekah Valentine and an EA spokesperson, that an undisclosed number of employees across Battlefield teams had been laid off. The studios named were DICE, Criterion, Ripple Effect, and Motive Studios.
The report said all four studios would remain operational and continue supporting Battlefield 6. EA called the changes a “realignment.”
What reason did EA give?
An EA spokesperson said the company made “select changes within our Battlefield organization to better align our teams around what matters most to our community.” EA also said the franchise remained a priority, with ongoing investment guided by player feedback and Battlefield Labs. The statement described the company’s rationale; it did not explain the specific staffing decisions at each studio.

How does this follow the game’s launch?
On October 16, 2025, EA announced that Battlefield 6 sold more than 7 million copies in its first three days and called it the biggest launch in Battlefield franchise history. In a later FY26 Q3 results release, EA described the game as “the best-selling shooter title of 2025.” Both are EA’s own characterizations.
The sales announcement and the layoffs report document events at different times: the launch figure was announced in October 2025, while the staffing changes were reported in March 2026. Their sequence does not establish that the game’s sales caused the layoffs, nor that strong sales should have prevented them. The available statements do not disclose a causal link.

How many people were laid off?
The March 9 coverage did not disclose the number of employees affected. It also gave no total headcount, list of roles, or office-by-office breakdown. Any more precise estimate would go beyond what the report establishes.
