Released worldwide on July 19, 2024, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, it brought back the college-football series with all 134 FBS schools, thousands of current athletes represented through an NIL arrangement, and familiar modes such as Dynasty and Road to Glory. Launch figures show exceptional demand and a landmark commercial return; they do not, by themselves, prove that its long-term cultural legacy is settled.
When did College Football 25 come out, and where can you play it?
EA Sports College Football 25 launched worldwide on July 19, 2024. EA described the return as coming after “11 long years” since the previous game in the series, NCAA Football 14, released in 2013. The launch platforms were PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; this installment was not released for PS4, Xbox One, or PC. Why was the game so hyped?
The anticipation combined three distinct attractions: nostalgia for a dormant series, the chance to play with the identity and traditions of current college football, and the arrival of real current athletes’ likenesses through name, image, and likeness (NIL) agreements. The long wait gave the return emotional weight, while the scale of the roster and school representation made it feel like a new version of the college game rather than a simple revival.
A long absence created pent-up interest
EA itself foregrounded the 11-year hiatus in its launch-week messaging. For fans who had gone years without a new college-football simulation, the announcement and release offered a concrete return to a series that had been missing since 2013. That helps explain why the game became an online event, but it is not a measured account of why each player bought or tried it.

Current athletes and the breadth of college football
EA said the game included all 134 FBS universities, more than 150 stadiums, and thousands of current college athletes represented through an NIL arrangement. That combination connected familiar school identities and venues with a roster rooted in the contemporary sport. It also addressed a defining difference between a college-football game and a professional league simulation: the schools, conferences, traditions, and athletes are central to how fans recognize the sport.
Familiar modes made the return playable in different ways
EA’s feature announcement highlighted Dynasty, Road to Glory, Ultimate Team, and Road to the College Football Playoff. Dynasty lets players manage a program over time, while Road to Glory focuses on an individual player’s college career. Alongside the new edition’s gameplay features—Wear and Tear, Pre-Snap Recognition, and homefield advantages—those modes gave longtime fans recognizable ways into the game and new systems to explore. What do the launch numbers actually show?
EA reported 2.2 million unique Early Access players and another 600,000 players who joined through the EA Play trial around launch. It later reported five million unique players during the first week, plus more than 500,000 additional EA Play trial players. These are player counts, including trial participation—not paid copies sold. The later first-week figure should not be added to the earlier count as though the two were separate audiences. EA published the figures in its Early Access update and first-week update.
The strongest sales comparison comes from Circana data shared by analyst Mat Piscatella: the game’s launch-month U.S. dollar sales more than tripled the lifetime U.S. dollar sales of NCAA Football 07, previously the best-selling college-football game. Piscatella also reported that College Football 25 was the best-selling game of 2024 year-to-date at that point. This is a comparison of tracked dollar sales, not a claim that the new game sold three times as many copies. EA separately said College Football 25 was the best-selling HD title in North America through September 2024. The distinct measures and periods should not be combined into a single unit-sales total.

EA’s audience reports and the Circana sales comparison point in the same broad direction: the return drew a very large audience and performed exceptionally well commercially. They do not show how much of that demand was caused by online posts, trailers, streams, nostalgia, or any other single factor.
Was College Football 25 worth the wait?
For the specific promise of a modern college-football game after an 11-year break, the launch delivered substantial scope: every FBS school, more than 150 stadiums, thousands of current athletes, and returning career and program modes. The audience and sales figures show that many players were ready for that return. They cannot settle whether the game was worth the wait for every player, because that depends on individual expectations and assessments of its gameplay and quality—questions those launch figures do not answer.

What is College Football 25’s lasting legacy?
The firmest legacy claim is that College Football 25 demonstrated significant pent-up demand for a college-football simulation and marked a commercially successful return for the franchise. It also stands as the point when NIL-enabled current athlete likenesses arrived at scale in this series. Those are meaningful milestones, grounded in the game’s contents and launch performance.
A broader claim—that the game permanently changed gaming culture, reshaped the genre, or sustained a particular community influence—needs evidence beyond launch numbers. By 2026, later annual releases have followed it, so College Football 25 is best understood as the landmark first return, not the current installment or a settled verdict on the series’ long-term direction.
