EA Sports FC 25’s biggest launch changes were FC IQ, a new tactical system built around player roles and team instructions, and Rush, a 5v5 mode. Career Mode also gained women’s football, while Live Start Points were designated for a post-launch update. Since launch, gameplay tuning and Rush rules have changed, so the original feature announcements do not describe every current detail.
FC IQ changes tactics and off-ball movement
FC IQ is EA’s new tactical and positional system, presented as a core gameplay pillar alongside HyperMotionV and PlayStyles. EA said FC 25 would include more than 50 new Player Roles. Those roles shape how players behave and move when they do not have the ball; they sit within a broader system for setting up and adjusting a team.

The three parts of FC IQ
- Player Roles: Guide individual players’ positioning and behavior away from the ball.
- Team Tactics: Overhaul team positioning and provide tactical presets.
- Smart Tactics: Offer in-match suggestions and D-pad adjustments.
In practical terms, Player Roles and Team Tactics define how the side is organized; Smart Tactics are the adjustment layer available during a match. EA says tactical codes can be shared across modes, consoles, and generations. That describes the sharing feature, not identical presentation or performance on every platform.
EA’s July 17, 2024 launch announcement framed FC IQ as an effort to modernize player tactics using AI and real-world data. The claim is EA’s description of its design, not an independent assessment of the results. EA’s launch announcement and FC IQ feature details explain the system.

Rush brings 5v5 football to several modes
Rush is FC 25’s small-sided 5v5 format. In Clubs and Ultimate Team, each side has four user-controlled outfield players and an AI-controlled goalkeeper. EA lists Rush in Ultimate Team, Clubs, Kick Off, and Manager Career; in Manager Career, it appears in Youth Academy tournaments.
How Rush works in Ultimate Team
Ultimate Team Rush matches can award Rush Points toward objectives and rewards. At launch, EA described seven-minute matches. That is no longer the right unqualified description for Ultimate Team: a later update shortened those matches to five minutes. In its First Frost update post, EA said that 95% of seven-minute Ultimate Team Rush matches were won by the team leading at the fifth minute, citing the figure as context for the change. This is EA-reported game data, not an independent study.

Rules and match length depend on mode and update
EA Help describes standard Rush matches as seven minutes, followed by extra time and then one-on-one penalty shootouts if tied. The later five-minute change specifically concerns Football Ultimate Team Rush. Check the mode-specific rule rather than assuming one match length applies across Rush everywhere. EA Help’s Rush overview describes the format, while EA’s First Frost update post records the Ultimate Team change.
Career Mode additions: women’s football and Live Start Points
EA announced a Women’s Career experience in which players can choose a club or player from one of the top five women’s leagues. The announcement presents this as a Career Mode addition, rather than a separate mode outside Career.

Live Start Points were intended to let players enter real-world football storylines—for example, taking over a club after transfers or a managerial change. EA’s feature page labels Live Start Points a post-launch update, so they should not be treated as a launch-day feature. FC 25’s launch features were not the final version of its rules and tuning. EA’s January 15, 2025 Gameplay Refresh Update announced changes to passing, shooting, goalkeeping, and defending. EA also said it aimed to make attacking play more fluid, reduce tacklebacks and AI interceptions, address defenders catching fast ball carriers too readily, and improve AI attacking runs. The post also noted an adjustment to Rush Club Search in Ultimate Team. These are descriptions of EA’s update intentions and changes, not a claim about how every player will experience them.

The later First Frost post added FC IQ options, including the Classic 10 role for CAM and Wide Half for CDM, as well as other tactical focus additions and quality-of-life changes. It also documented the reduction in Ultimate Team Rush match time. Together, these updates show why it is useful to separate launch announcements from features and tuning added afterward.
